Lesson Plan Format (modified for EDUC 253)

Lucy Kunz
Date of Lesson: 10-20-2018
Grade level: Third Grade
Time required for lesson: 25 minutes
“Frosty Relay on Kahoot”
Discipline Content area(s): Mathematics- Multiplication and Division
Class description: 10 boys, 15 girls (2 of these students are Advanced Learners, 1 student is an
ELL, and 3 students have an IEP)

Common Core State Standard/NYS Standard (https://www.engageny.org/):

1. 3.OA.B.5: Operations & Algebraic Thinking- Apply properties of operations as strategies to
multiply and divide.

2. ISTE Standard 4: Innovative Designer– Students use a variety of technologies within a

design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.

Learning Objective(s) for the lesson: Students will define the different properties of operation.
Students will be able to interpret the property of an operation in a math problem. Students will
also be able to apply the properties of operations as a strategy to multiply and divide. Students
will be able to solve math problems using the properties of operations. Teamwork as well as
automaticity will be improved after the conduction of this activity.

Rationale for the Lesson: The purpose of this lesson is to help students become more fluent with
math and division facts as well as have the opportunity to feel motivated and collaborate with
fellow peers. Sharing and listening to fellow students’ answers enriches the experience and makes
a child think. Students also have to take a leadership role in fulfilling their initial assigned duty
(team logon, participating, answering the question). My goal is with the repetition of the lesson
and the different problems students will be able to eventually answer questions automatically.
Practicing these math problems will help achieve this.

Multiple Assessment strategies you will use: This activity is primarily a fun lesson;
however, it works on the consistency of math facts to the point where seeing a question
in math or division and knowing what property it is can be answered without hesitation.
As third graders in the fall season, students will most likely have prior knowledge
regarding these mathematical concepts. Therefore, I will test their prior knowledge by
giving them an entrance ticket. In this particular lesson, the formal assessment will be
our game “Frosty Relay on Kahoot.” Automaticity and making improvements serve as
the main goals for “Frosty Relay on Kahoot.” After the Kahoot game I will look at the
assessment of the students through the game seeing which questions they got correct
and incorrect and teach more on those operations. (examples: prior knowledge, assessment
of objective(s), formative assessment(s); pre-and post-assessment, etc.)

Materials needed: Pencil, paper, Kahoot app or Url, and IPad/tablets

Technology (preferably used by student): Students will have one IPads or tablets per team with a
team leader. Students will pick out a team name and type it into the Kahoot box. They will then
get a certain amount of time to answer the question after discussing it with a teammate. At the
end of the game, students will see who the winner is. One tablet or IPad will be provided per
group of 3-4 students.

Instructional procedures (be very detailed in this entire section—what you will do and what the
students will do; do not give a script of what you’ll say)

Introduction (hook) (how are you introducing the lesson, so it gets their attention):
Before starting the Prezi presentation. I will then ask the students to do their entrance ticket. This
will get the minds stirring of each student in the classroom. After the entrance ticket, each of the
students to find their name on one of the group of desks. After the finding their seat, the class can
ask me any questions about the lesson that they have. I will then introduce the game Kahoot and
see if students in the class know the game. For the children who don’t know what Kahoot is and
have never played before, I will explain how the game test their knowledge, automaticity skills,
and team-work skills. After explaining how the game initially works and the rules. I will introduce
the property of operations for multiplication and division, by doing so I will use a variety of
methods for different types of learners. I will the show them the screencastify that I produced,
explaining how to get to Kahoot and how to play it. I will also present a Prezi presentation and
within the slides there will be images and questions for the class to discuss. In their groups there
will be a couple of math problems for them to discuss and I will walk around to see how well the
children are learning the concept. If all the students understand the lesson, we will then move onto
the game. I will pick a designated iPad student in each group who will log onto the Kahoot game
and their whole team will decide on a name together. Once everyone is logged in we will begin
the game. During the game students will be discussing the questions and deciding on which
answer to pick as a team. Once the game is all done each student will grab their own iPad and use
an existing app called Padlet to discuss what they learned today.

Developmental activities
—teacher modeling; checking for understanding; guided practice; independent practice):
As I proceed through the Prezi presentations, I will be asking several questions for their
group to discuss and asking for a response. When doing this I am checking that each
student is understanding what they are learning. I will also make sure before we play
Kahoot that each student understands how the game work, by asking them if they
understand and by demonstrating how to play the game. I will make sure the students
understand that you are always allowed to ask me questions and that each of their
participation in this game counts! Within my Prezi presentation I will explain digital the
netiquette, share expert knowledge. This will allow students to share what they know and
understand.
—adaptations (differentiated instruction; accommodations/modifications—how will you
“differentiate” or “switch up” your instruction for your different learners; see your list of
types of students in your Class Description): To help my students that have IEPs I will
place them with the student who is more advanced, hoping that they could help those
children understand better. My student, who’s an ELL, will be placed in a normal group
and I will read aloud the question to help the child understand the words. I will also make
sure the groups communicate to one another, so we all understand the information. I will
make sure the time limit is on the maximum time possible on the questions allowing all
the students to get as much time as possible, so that students who are trying to help one
another will not be penalized.
Closure (Do not simply tell the student what they learned; giving a quiz or test or homework or
continuing the lesson is not closure. How can you “close” or wrap-up your lesson?):
I will then ask if the students enjoyed the activity, why or why not, what they learned,
and things they found that could be improved for next time. This will be answered in the
Padlet that is provided to them. The answers from Kahoot as well as the Padlet will
provide me with information on how to change my lesson plan and who needs more
assistance within the classroom.
Extensions (this is not homework; it’s something you would have your students do to further develop
their understanding of the topic and continue working towards mastering the learning objective): After
allowing them to finish up their answers on Padlet, I will explain to the class that they can keep this
activity in mind and play at home online with their friends and family. They can also search for other
Kahoots in this subject area as well as other lessons that we are learning in class! This is why teachers
love this game! I will send home directions on how to get to the Kahoot that I created as well as how
they can search for other topics or subjects right at home.
