COURSE: BFC43502 – OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH

SEMESTER/YEAR: SEM 1/ 2018-2019
TASK: PROJECT (GROUP) (20%)

Introduction

You were recently being awarded a new construction project of “Proposed development of 200 units
of two-storey terrace house” by a client. You were requested by the client to provide a preliminary
risk assessment report prior to the commencement of the construction, and recommend the
appropriate risk controls to ensure the safety and health of workers while performing their works, and
further prevent an accident. Your report should be in accordance with the HIRARC guideline.

Topics (each group shall be given one topic):

1. Site clearing, inc setting up site office

2. Excavation
3. Piling work
4. Demolition work
5. Electrical work
6. Concrete work & finishing
7. Mechanical plant & machinery
8. Lifting operations
9. Confined space work
10. Welding
11. Road work
12. Roof work
13. Masonry work

Instruction
1. This task should be executed in group.
2. Identify at least 10 safety and health hazards, including at least 3 health hazards at the
workplace.
3. Estimate the safety and health risks from each and every one of these hazards.
4. Determine the most critical safety and health hazards.
5. Suggest and discuss the control measures to eliminate the hazard and reduce the risks of
both critical hazards.
6. The report should be submitted in Week 14.
7. Presentation on week 14.

Report format
1. Report should be written in English.
2. The font used must be Times New Roman size 11 and using 1.5 spacing
3. The paper size is A4. The left and right margin must be 2.5cm, while the top and bottom
margin must be 3cm.

Content of the report

1. Introduction
A brief description of the task (project) and the job task given. The introduction must
include specific work process assigned to your group in terms of safety and health.
2. Flow chart of the activities involved in in the activities
3. Method
Explain methods of risk assessment (risk estimation and risk evaluation). Provide matrix
used, explanation of likelihood and severity and decision for action
4. HIRARC table
5. Discussion on HIRARC table
 Describe the most critical hazards (1 safety hazard, 1 health hazard).
 Rationalize your choice for the most critical hazards above.
 Explain in detail the proposed control measures in accordance to the hierarchy of risk
control (preventive and corrective) for the most critical safety hazards.
 Explain in detail the proposed control measures in accordance to the hierarchy of risk
control (preventive and corrective) for the most critical health hazards.

List all references in this report with proper citation (APA style).
Make sure all these references are cross-reference in the text.

Assessment criteria (20%)

 COGNITIVE: Report (Able to understand project criteria/background; Able to understand the

method of risk assessment process) – 5%
 PSYCHOMOTOR: Report (Demonstrate efficiency in the risk assessment process) – 7.5%
 AFFECTIVE: Presentation and report (Presentation, Teamwork) – 7.5%
