3. METHOD OF CALCULATION

3.1 General
Connection strength calculation is performed with using AISC LRFD specification as a main
standard. Connection strength calculation is based on failure mode of member or connection plate
that occured in connection when load applied. Failure mode is various for different types of
connection, and it is convenient to categorize them according to the type of loading as a limit state.
Loads in connection based on Bag House Steel Structure Model for strength calculation (Ref. 5).

3.2 Bearing Strength

The formula used to calculate bearing strength based on bolt configuration is in accordance with
AISC.

A possible failure mode resulting from excessive bearing is shear tear-out at the end of connected
element. The nominal bearing strength of a single bolt is determined as follows:

 Rn   1.2 lc t Fu   2.4 d t Fu (1)

where

lc : clear distance, in the direction parallel to the applied load, from the edge of the bolt to
the edge of the adjacent hole or to the edge of the material (mm)
t : thickness of the connected part (mm)
Fu : ultimate tensile stress of the connected part (MPa)
Ø : reduction factor = 0.75

3.3 Bolt shear Strength

Nominal bolt shear strength is determined as follows:

 Rn   Fnv Ab (2)

Bag House Connection Strength Calculation

where

Fnv : nominal shear strength (expressed as a stress) (MPa)

Ab : cross-sectional area of the unthreaded part of the bolt (nominal bolt area) (mm)
Ø : reduction factor for shear = 0.75

3.4 Block Shear Strength

For certain connection configurations, a segment or “block” of material at the end of the member
can tear out. Based on AISC, available strength for the limit state of block shear rupture along a
shear failure path and a perpendicular tension failure path shall be taken as follows:

 Rn    0.6 Fu Anv  U bs Fu Ant     0.6 Fy Agv  U bs Fu Ant  (3)

where

Agv : gross area subject to shear (mm2)

Ant : net area subject to tension (mm2)
Anv : net area subject to shear (mm2)
Ubs : factor taken as 1.0
Ø : reduction factor for shear = 0.75

3.5 Element Shear Strength

Based on AISC, available shear yield strength of affected and connecting elements in shear shall
be the lower value obtained according to the limit states of shear yielding and shear rupture.

For shear yielding of the element

 Rn   0.60 Fy Ag (4)

For shear rupture of the element

 Rn   0.60 Fu Anv (5)

Bag House Connection Strength Calculation

where

Agv : gross area subject to shear (mm2)

Anv : net area subject to shear (mm2)
Ø : reduction factor for shear = 1.00 (yield), 0.75 (rupture)

3.6 Element Tension Strength

Based on AISC, available strength of affected and connecting elements loaded in tension shall be
the lower value obtained accordng to the limit states of tensile yielding and tensile rupture.

For tensile yielding of cononecting elements

 Rn   Fy Ag (6)

For tensile rupture of connecting elements

 Rn   Fu Ae (7)

where

Ae : effective net area (mm2)

Ø : reduction factor for tension = 0.90 (yield), 0.75 (rupture)

3.7 Bolt Tensile Strength in Combined Tension and Shear

Based on AISC, available tensile strength of a bolt subjected to combined tension and shear shall
be determined according to the limit states of tension and shear rupture as follows:

 Rn   Fnt' Ab (8)

where

F’nt : nominal tensile stress modified to include the effects of shearing stress (MPa)

Fnt
Fnt'  1.3 Fnt  f  Fnt (9)
 Fnv v

Bag House Connection Strength Calculation

Fnt : nominal tensile stress (can be taken as 0.75 Fu) (MPa)

Fnv : nominal shear stress (MPa)
fv : required shear stress (MPa)
Ø : reduction factor for shear (= 0.75)

3.8 Member Flexural Strength

Limit states of connection member/part that bent about their major axis is yielding (plastic
moment). Based on AISC, available strength for yielding shall be determined as follows:

 M n   Fy Z x (10)

where

Fy : specified minimum yield stress (MPa)

Zx : plastic section modulus about the x-axis (mm3)
Ø : reduction factor for flexural = 0.90

3.9 Flange and Web with Concentrated Forces

There are two types of concentrated forces that applied to the member. A single-concentrated force
can be either tensile or compressive. Double-concentrated forces are one tensile and one
compressive and form a couple on the same side of the loaded member. When the required strength
exceeds the available strength as determined for the limit states listed, stiffeners and/or doublersa
shall be provided and shall be sized for the difference between the required strength and the
available strength.

1) Flange local bending

Based on AISC, flange limit for local bending shall be determined as follows:

 Rn   6.25 t 2f Fyf (11)

Bag House Connection Strength Calculation

where

Fyf : specified minimum yield stress of the flange (MPa)

tf : thickness of the loaded flange (mm)
Ø : reduction factor for bending = 0.90

2) Web local yielding

Based on AISC, limit for web local yielding shall be determined as follows:

 Rn   (5k  N ) Fyw tw (12)

where

k : distance from outer face of the flange to the web toe of the fillet (mm)
Fyw : specified miniimum yield stress of the web (MPa)
N : length of bearing (not less than k for end beam reactions) (mm)
tw : web thickness (mm)
Ø : reduction factor for yield = 1.00

3) Web crippling
The available strength for the limit state of web local crippling shall be determined as follows:

  tw   E Fyw t f
1.5
 N 
 Rn   0.80 t 1  3     
2
(13)
  d   t f  
w
tw
 

where

d : overall depth of the member (mm)

tf : flange thickness (mm)
Ø : reduction factor for crippling = 0.75

Bag House Connection Strength Calculation

3.10 Weld Strength

Based on AISC, strength of weld shall be the lower value of the base material and the weld metal
strength determined according to the limit states of tensile rupture, shear rupture or yielding as
follows:

For the base metal

 Rn   FBM ABM (14)

For the weld metal

 Rn   Fw Aw (15)

where

FBM : nominal strength of the base metal per unit area (MPa)
Fw : nominal strength of the weld metar per unit area (AISC table J2.5) (MPa)
ABM : cross-sectional area of the base metal (mm2)
Aw : effective area of the weld (mm2)
Ø : reduction factor = 0.75

For weld groups that concetrically loaded and consisting of elements that are oriented both
longitudinally and transversely to the direction of applied load, combined strength shall be
determined as the greater of:

Rn  Rwl  Rwt (16)

or

Rn  0.85Rwl  1.5Rwt (17)

where

Rwl : total nominal strength of longitudinally loaded fillet welds (N)

Rwt : total nominal strength of transversely loaded fillet weld (N)

3.11 Column Base Plate Connection

When a column base resists only compressive column axial loads, the base plate must be large
enough to resist the bearing forces transferred from the base plate (concrete bearing limit), and the
base plate must be of sufficient thickness (base plate yielding limit).

1) Concrete bearing limit

AISC Specification, Section J8, provides nominal bearing strength as follows:

 Pp   0.85 fc' A (18)

where

fc’ : specified compressive strength of concrete (MPa)

A : area of steel concentrically bearing on a concrete support (mm2)

2) Base plate yielding limit

For yielding limit state, the required minimum thickness of the base plate can be calculated as
follows (Thornton, 1990) (AISC, 2005):

2 Pu
tmin  l (19)
 Fy B N

where

N : base plate length (mm)

B : base plate width (mm)
Fy : specified minimum yield strength of baseplate (MPa)
Pu : required axial compressive load (N)
Ø : resistance factor for flexure = 0.90

4.3 Conclusion

This document contain information and result of Bag House steel connection, which detailed
specification based on “Detail Bracing Support Bag House” technical drawing (Ref. 4).

From the result of calculation, connection for Joint Column does not meet criteria in bending so it
is recommended to change the plate thickness to 12 mm (recalculation presented in Appendix
B.1.2). Column transverse stiffeners are needed for Connection number 8 as the recommendation,
presented in Appendix B.10. The rest of the connection is considered adequate in meeting the
design criteria for limit state corresponding to AISC codes (Ref. 1).
