THE JAPANESE THEATRE OF KABUKI

Kabuki is one of Japan’s finest traditional theatrical arts and is still widely accepted today as
a beautiful art form. Japan had never imagined such glamour, excitement, and extraordinary
techniques until kabuki hit the stage. Its outstanding colors, vigorous dancing, and exciting
storylines have kept it alive through five centuries.

During the Edo Era, when Kabuki originated, the Japanese society was divided into social classes.
The distinction between warriors and the commoners was very severe, and concerned even the
types of theatre they could attend. Because of this, Kabuki was initially popular only among the
common townspeople and not among the higher social classes. Kabuki became a gateway to let out
emotions on social restrictions, and most stories were about the conflict between humanity and the
feudal system.

Kabuki has many significant characteristics that set it apart from other theatrical art forms, one
being that there aren’t any female actresses. Only males take part in playing kabuki roles, and male
kabuki actors who specialize in playing female roles are called onnagata. In the early years, both
men and women acted in kabuki plays, but it wasn’t long before officials noticed men’s growing
interest in actresses and forbade women from acting in fear of social demoralization.

Kabuki plays are about historical events, moral conflicts, love relationships and the like. The
performances take place on a rotating stage. The stage is further equipped with several gadgets like
trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. The actors use an old fashioned
language which is difficult to understand even for some Japanese people. Actors speak in somewhat
monotonous voices accompanied by traditional Japanese instruments. Kabuki has incorporated
different techniques from other theatrical types preceding it. One of the major forms that are
included in kabuki are Noh drama, and its comical interludes, kyogen.
