Title Abrasion Resistance Test (For Unsealed Hard Anodizing Coating) (MIL-A-8625F)

Materials Needed:
Wheel abrasion tester

Wheel Abrasion Tester

Procedure:

1. Preparation of test specimen

Note: This test shall be determined on type III production parts or specimen panels. Unsealed Type III coatings
shall provide a hard resistant finish. The abrasion resistance of Type III coatings will decrease as the coating
thickness approaches 3 mils. In general, the abrasion resistance does not increase with the increasing coating
thickness.

*Get 2 pcs. test specimen from production. These parts are for process control inspection provided that they can be
adapted the applicable test. If the production parts cannot be adapted to the particular test, a test panel shall be used.
At the option of the supplier, test panels shall be composed of either 2024-T3 per QQ-A-250/4 or the alloy
representing the largest percent of work anodized during the monthly period. Whenever possible, the specimen
panels shall be anodized with an actual production run. When a specimen panels are used, they shall have a
minimum widht of 4 inches, a minimum length of 4 inches, and a minimum nominal thickness of 0.063 inches.

2. Abrasion Resistance Test Procedure

a. Weigh the test specimen for testing then put on the abrasive tester (using CS - 17 wheels with 1000 gram load).
b. The wheels shall revolve on the anodic coating at a speed of 70 revolutions per minute (RPM) for 10,000 cycles.
c. The abrasion wheels shall be refaced at least once every 10,000 cycles.
d. Measure the wieght of anodic coating after the test is conducted to determine the weight loss.
Weight loss (mg) = Anodic coating before testing (mg) - anodic coating after testing(mg)
Wear index (mg) = weight loss
10
Note:
The anodic coating shall have a maximum wear index of 3.5 mg/1000 cycles on aluminum alloys having a copper
content of 2% highe (aluminum alloys having a nominal copper content of 2% or higher include all 2XXX series alloys,
7050, and 7178). The wear index for all the other alloys shall not exceed 1.5 mg/1000 cycles.

Houserules
1. Be sure to wear necessary PPE's in performing the activity.
2. Perform 5's before and after the activity.
3. Follow proper segregation of waste and disposal
