Formulation, Stability, and Antibacterial Activity of Toothpaste of Essential Oil
of Galanga (Alpinia galanga L.) Rhizome
ABSTRACT
Galanga (Alpinia galanga L.) rhizome contain essential oil that have been
reported to have antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitor concentration of
1,25-12,5 µl/ml. The purpose of this study is to determine physical properties,
stability, and the antibacterial activity of toothpaste from essential oil of galanga
rhizome against S. mutans and S. aureus. Essential oils of galanga rhizome was
obtained from Esteris Nusantara Yogyakarta. Chemical constituents of essential
oil of galanga rhizome was analyzed with Gass Chromatography Mass
Spectrometer (GCMS). Essential oils was formulated into 4 toothpaste formulas
with concentrations of 1,25, 2,5, 5 and 10%. Toothpaste was tested for physical
properties, stability with freeze thaw method and antibacterial activity using
diffusion method. The result of analysis of essential oil of galanga rhizome using
GCMS showed that the major constituents are eucalyptol (6,92%), 4-phenyl
furoxane (25,69%), and methyl cinnamate (52,38%). Toothpaste of essential oil of
galanga rhizome are homogeneous, meet the pH standard but doesn’t meet the
viscosity standard. Toothpaste of essential oil of galanga rhizome was unstable.
Toothpaste of essential oil of galanga rhizome at concentration of 10% has
antibacterial activity against S. mutans and S. aureus that is better than that of
product innovator.
