Grieg C Minor Sonata
Written in 1887 Grieg’s Sonata in C Minor is the third for violin
and piano that he composed. Grieg has explained that each
Sonata reflects a period in his life. "The first, ingenious and full
of new ideas; the second, nationalistic, and the third, turned
toward vaster horizons."
The key of C minor characterizes the tense urgency of the
thematic material in the first movement. The different themes in
the first movement create juxtaposing characters. The second
movement opens with a tender dolce theme in the piano which
the violin then takes over. The short allegro sections are quite
agitated in nature. The final movement of this Sonata is
characterised by the animated and lively theme of the opening,
which is developed throughout. In the words of Rune J.
Andersen, the piece contains "universal and national elements
fused into something deeply personal and specifically Griegian."

Bruch Scottish Fantasy

“Scottish Fantasy is, at first glance, perhaps a misleading title

for a substantial, four-movement work that has the dimensions
of a symphony or concerto.”
Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy composed in 1880 has sometimes
received criticism, as Bruch never visited Scotland before
composing the work. The themes heard throughout the work
however are traditional Scottish Folk tunes. Bruch was
discouraged by the fact many violinists insisted on performing
his first two concertos rather then the Scottish Fantasy.
The piece opens with an almost melancholic atmosphere. The
first movement is characterised heavily by this stately melody.
The lively second movement turns toward a Scottish Dance. The
third very melodic movement demonstrated Bruch’s love for
melodic writing. The finale of the piece is virtuosic. The tender
characters are intertwined with the Scottish Dance Characters to
create a very contrasting movement.
