With a hammer, a few nails, a lot of ingenuity
and materials donated by interested friends and
parents, physical education instructor John
Williams has accomplished a two-fold purpose on
the Ayden Elementary School playground. He has
provided additional ways and means of keeping a
generation of T.V -watehers physically fit and at
the same time eliminated a number of recess-
time discipline problems that resulted from the
what-ts-there-to-do syndrome.

Ayden's Lay Leader
InEducation
By Stuart Tripp
Is there such a thing as a Lay Leader In Education? I think
so, but I don't know. We have been fortunate at Ayden
Elementary School in having many fine school volunteers. We
are very fortunate in another respect because one of these
‘volunteers has become more than a good volunteer, maybe a
‘Lay Leader in education forthe Ayden School Community.
Pifleen years ago, Ayden Elementary had a new school
‘principal, who for al his years in education was unschooled in
thebest methods of seeking community help. At he same time
a new family had moved into Ayden who was Interested in
having the best school possible for their children and the
children of the Ayden community. The lady ofthe family was |
the spokesman. An uneasy alliance was formed by this
‘unschooled principal and thislady, as neither was quite sure of
the other. Over the years I can say Ihave learned to trust,
respect and love thi family forthe many hours they have put
intomake this school a great place to educate a child
Why, Why, have I waited so long to say thanks? Why, Why:
has it been possible fora person to do So much for @ school
community, andthe community not to say thanks? Is it we, as
‘people, have ost the artofsaying thanks?
‘What has Ann Creech done for as to say thanks for? Ihave
broken them down into two categories: minor and major.
Minor—Served as a leader (if not the chairperson) on all

Major—Served on a state Parent Council that went to
Raleigh and convinced the governor and legislature that
‘Learning Disabled Children had a right to be educated. The
‘greatest of her achievements was the new middle school. Sbe
‘had to convince the Board of Education that we needed one and
the county commissioners to fund it. For the past five years
‘most people were postive that the new school would not be
Dull. She did not waiver. She pushed people in the local
‘community to continue the fight. She encouraged the county
‘school board and the county commissioners to get together.
‘She hurdled every obstacle in her path and got the job done
