This paper will review the research and the development in the area of textile

reinforced concrete (TRC) that has evolved over the years. The role of textile structure in
concrete/cement specimen has been discussed. The textile reinforcement add ductility
to the concrete structure unlike the iron/steel rebars which is being used in common
practice. The textile structure has the added advantage of corrosion resistance and
higher strength to weight ratio compared to the steel rebars. The different textile
structures such as woven and knitted structures, fabric parameters and geometry
influencing the TRC properties has been discussed in this study. The literature suggests
that woven fabric performs better compared to straight yarn and knitted structure due
to the combined advantages of inherent crimped structure which gives mechanical
anchoring and warp-weft interlacement which provides resistance against pull out
force/load. In general, use of textile structure in concrete, increases the fracture
strength and toughness, pull out load, splitting tensile strength and prevents crack
formation and its propagation in concrete. However, studies revealed that the slump
value, density and compressive strength of concrete reduces with the incorporation of
textiles in concrete matrix.
