2. All questions are compulsory.
3. Internal choice is given in sections B, C, D and E.
4. Question numbers 1 and 2 are one mark questions. These are to be answered in one word or in one
sentence.
5. Question numbers 3 to 5 are two marks questions. These are to be answered in about 30 words each.
6. Question numbers 6 to 15 are three marks questions. These are to be answered in about 50 words each.
7. Question numbers 16 to 21 are five marks questions. There are to be answered in about 70 words each.
8. Question numbers 22 to 27 are based on practical skills. Each question is of two marks. There are to be
answered in brief

Section {A}
1. Calculate the number of electrons constituting one Coulomb of charge.
2. Write the Modern Periodic law.

Section {B}
3. How is the brain protected?
Or What will happen if there is sudden shortage of water in the body?

4. Amit was making a model of electric bell. He connected the coil in the circuit and
switched it ON. However, the magnetism produced in the coil was not strong
enough. Then, he made some changes in the coil and the circuit was now working
properly. He also found out other ways of producing a strong magnetism.
Read the above passage and answer the following questions
(i) What changes did the boy make in the coil?
(ii) What values of the boy would you appreciate?

5. (i) Name two nutrients absorbed from air.


(ii) Name two elements that are used in fabricating solar cells.

6. Lalit came to know that plants being autotrophs produce their own food. He asks his
teacher to explain how plants produce their food and transport it throughout their
body.
(i) Show with the help of a flow chart, how glucose prepared in leaves is transported to
the other parts of plants.
(ii) What values do you observe in Lalit’s behaviour?

7. Describe an activity to illustrate the phenomenon of phototropism and explain why


does this occur.

8. Describe the formation of rainbow in the sky with the help of a diagram.
9. Manoj is a twelve years old boy. He obtained a lens from one of his friends. Manoj
held the lens towards the Sun and started looking at the Sun through it. On seeing
this, Manoj’s elder brother ran towards him and snatched away the lens from him.
The brother firmly told Manoj not to do it again.
(i) What could be the nature of the lens?
(ii) Why did the brother snatch the lens from Manoj?
(iii) What values are shown by Manoj’s brother?

10. (i) Draw an electric circuit to prove Ohm’s law label all the circuit components.
(ii) State Ohm’s law.

(i) Represent the resistance of a copper wire and a nichrome wire in the same V-I graph.
Reason out your graphical representation.
(ii) Define1Ω of resistance.

11. (i) Define absolute refractive index.


(ii) Refractive indices of kerosene, turpentine and water are 1.44, 1.47 and 1.33,
respectively. Through which of these media, will light travel the fastest and why?

(i) Define power of a lens.
(ii) Two thin lenses of focal lengths 10 cm and − 5 cm are kept in contact with each other.
What is the focal length and power of this combination?

12. Answer the following:


(i) What is the function of Earth wire in electrical instruments?
(ii) Explain, what is short circuiting in electric supply.
(iii) What is the usual current rating of the fuse wire in the line to feed:
(a) Lights and fans? (b) Appliances of 2 kW or more power?
13. Give reasons for the following:
(i) Danger signals are red.
(ii) Sun can be seen two minutes before the actual sunrise.
(iii) We cannot see an object clearly, if it is placed very close to our eyes.

14. Write down the chemical name and composition of washing soda. Mention its two
uses and write down the chemical equation for its preparation.
Or “pH has a great importance in our daily life.” Explain by giving three examples.
15. Read the following poem and answer the following questions
‘A’ make the Endocrine System work
They’re always around, they always lurk
And they do so many things
And to the body the blood always brings
So many chemicals all over abound
Each only binds to specific receptors found.
Sometimes they’re high, sometimes they’re low
And ‘A’ always absolutely go
Via the blood until it finds,
Its special receptor, where it binds
(i) Identify ‘A’. (ii) What are the components of endocrine system?
(iii) Mention two functions performed by ‘A’.

16. (i) Write the harmful effects of using plastic bags on the environment. Suggest
alternatives to plastic bags.
(ii) “Energy flow in a food chain is unidirectional”. Justify this statement.

(i) Give an example of an aquatic food chain. What are the different levels known as?
(ii) In the following food chain, 100J of energy is available to the lion. How much energy
was available to the producers and why?

17. (i) What is reactivity series? How does the reactivity series of metals help in predicting
the relative activities of various metals?
(ii) Suggest different chemical processes used for obtaining a metal from its oxides for
metals in the middle of the reactivity series and metals towards the top of the
reactivity series. Support your answer with one example each.

18. (i) Draw a well-labelled diagram of human female reproductive system.


(ii) What is menstrual cycle? Why does it occur?

(i) Why is DNA copying an essential part of the process of reproduction?
(ii) If a woman is using an IUD (Intrauterine Device), will it help in protecting her from
sexually transmitted diseases?
(iii) Suggest a method which protects from unwanted pregnancies as well as STDs. Give
reason.
19. A compound ‘ C’ (Molecular formula C 2H 4O 2 ) reacts with Na-metal to form a
compound ‘R’ and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound. Compound ‘C’ on
treatment with an alcohol ‘A’ in the presence of an acid forms a fruit smelling
compound ‘S’ (Molecular formula C 3 H 6 O 2 ). On adding of NaOH to ‘C’ it also gives ‘R’
and water. ‘S’ on treatment with NaOH gives back ‘R’ and ‘A’. Identify C, R, A, S and
write down the reactions involved.

20. (i) What are the three different ways in which a particular trait may increase in a
population? Explain.
(ii) A chimpanzee can hold objects by its hand and an elephant by its trunk. Are these two
organs analogous or homologous? Give reason to support your answer.

21. (i) Write a balanced chemical equation for each of the following reactions and also
classify them.
(a) Iron (III) oxide on heating with carbon monoxide gas reacts to form solid iron
and liberates carbon dioxide gas.
(b) Lead acetate solution is treated with dilute hydrochloric acid to form lead
chloride and acetic acid solution.
(c) Hydrogen sulphide gas reacts with oxygen gas to form solid sulphur and liquid
water.
(ii) What is meant by redox reaction. Given one example.

Identify the type of chemical reaction taking place in each of the following.
(i) Barium chloride solution is mixed with copper sulphate solution and a white
precipitate is observed.
(ii) On heating copper powder in air in a China dish, the surface of copper powder turns
black.
(iii) On heating green coloured ferrous sulphate crystals, reddish brown solid is left and
smell of a gas having odour of burning sulphur is experienced.
(iv) Iron nails when left dipped in blue copper sulphate solution become brownish in
colour and the blue colour of copper sulphate fades away.
(v) Quicklime reacts vigorously with water releasing a large amount of heat.

resistors R1 and R2, a student uses the circuit shown here. Will the circuit give the
correct reading for current I and voltage V ? Justify your answer.
