Lesson Title: Chapter 6: Teaching History
Environment: Blended Classroom
Grade: College Content Area: Teaching History
Central Focus: Teaching History in a Meaningful Way

Rationale:
This lesson will begin with an overview on what teaching history should look like. To
solidify these techniques we will do an example activity which exemplifies various good
practices for teaching the subject. The students will participate in a study of
photographs inspired by the activities on page 181 in our textbook. This interactive
activity will be followed by an assessment using Kahoot which will re-address the topics
covered in both the overview and the activity.

Objectives:
1. Teachers will communicate the important aspects of teaching history in a
creative way.
2. Students will participate in an all class discussion covering historical topics as
well as teaching principles.
3. Students will demonstrate a working understanding of the principles of teaching
history so that they are able to take a quiz.

Content Standards:

Lesson Plan

Opening: The lesson will begin with PowerPoint slideshow and discussion on the major
points of effect teaching concerning the content of history. This portion of the lesson is
meant to be a brief overview to allow students to gain familiarity with important concepts
as well as begin discussion on the way teaching history may be different from other
contents and the way teaching history has changed over the years.

Presentation and Practice: After the overview we will begin an Art Study containing
historical photographs. These photographs will first be discussed without their complete
context being revealed. We will discuss similarities and differences, context clues, and
the history they believe is surrounding this photo based on the history they already
know. Then the true history will be revealed and we will discuss where students were
correct in their theories and where they were wrong. We will then shift back to good
history teaching practices and show how this activity falls within them.

Closure: In closing, the class will be asked to participate in a Kahoot quiz. This quiz
will go over the topics discussed in class but will not be intended as a formal
assessment. It is meant to solidify information just learned and be a fun closing
activity.

Student Leading Learning: Reflection

Audrey and I recently taught our Integrated Social Studies class about
different ways to approach teaching history. I was very excited when we were
assigned the section on history, as it is my concentration and the root of my passion
for education. Audrey and I worked very well together, we were able to easily divide
and conquer while still collaborating throughout the entire process. Audrey was
truly a joy to work with and such a well versed student that I was able to learn from
her as well. This “Student Leading Learning” assignment was very beneficial; as we
were able to apply the skills we have been learning throughout college in a
professional setting. Audrey and I were able to complete this task smoothly and
truly had fun constructing and teaching.
The spin of our lesson was a presentation and discussion style lesson using
Google Slides. The presentation was only a few slides long but with each slide we
encouraged conversation and discussion so it was not just Audrey and I lecturing for
the entire class period. We discussed different ways to make history come alive in
the classroom, trying to present as many different resources as we could to the
class. The chapter we were presenting on had an abundance of resources
throughout it, which was helpful. We took one of the examples from the textbook
about presenting history through art and art analysis. This activity allowed for
discussion and interaction as we projected historical pictures on the board to be
analyzed by the class. The activity seemed to go well and I would definitely use this
in my own classroom. I wish we could have included more activities that were
suggested in the book but for the sake of time we had to choose just one. Once we
concluded our lesson on the chapter we closed by completing a fun kahoot quiz. The
quiz was created to reinforce our lesson and to integrate technology in several
different aspects of the lesson.
The lesson overall was successful. If I were to teach this lesson again I would
like to add in more interactive work between the students. I would have liked to
include another activity from the textbook as there were so many great ideas
throughout the chapter. Audrey and I worked well together but we could have
practiced more our oral portion of the presentation. Co-teaching is not necessarily
the easiest thing as you never want to step on someone’s toes but for our first time
teaching together I believe we worked well together.
