CHEMISTRY TEST

Instructions:
(i) All questions are compulsory.
(ii) Questions number 1 to 5 are very short answer questions and carry 1 mark each.
(iii) Questions 6 to 10 are short answer questions and carry 2 marks each.
(iv) Question number 11 to 22 are also short-answer questions and carry 3 marks each.
(v) Question number 23 is a value based questions and carries 4 marks.
(vi) Question number 24 to 26 are long-answer questions and carry 5 marks each.
(vii) Use Log Tables, if necessary. Use of calculators is not allowed.

1. Name a compound which shows both Frenkel and Schottky defects? In which of
these defects density remains same? [1]

320 K. Calculate the activation energy of the reaction. (Given : log 2 = 0.3010, log 4

23. Ankita visited her hometown in West Bengal. On her way, she saw house painted
with black letter signs ‘DDT, 7/14/2016’. On enquiring she found that DDT was
sprayed as an insecticide to control malaria despite its toxic effects as an organic
pollutant. She complained about the same with the District Commissioner of the
area, who in turn promised her to look into the matter and stop such sprays.

24. (a) Write the cell reaction and calculate the e.m.f. of the following cell at 298K:
Sn (s) | Sn2+ (0.004 M) || H+ (0.020 M) | H2 (g) (1 bar) | Pt (s)
(Given : E0 Sn+2 / Sn = 0.14)

(b) Give reasons :


(i) On the basis of E0 values, O2 gas should be liberated at anode but it is Cl2 gas
which is liberated in the electrolysis of aqueous NaCl.
(ii) Conductivity of CH3COOH decreases on dilution.

(a) For the reaction,
2 AgCl (s) + H2 (g) (1 atm)  2Ag (s) + 2H+ (0.1 M) + 2Cl– (0.1 M)
ΔGº = – 43600 J at 25ºC
Calculate the e.m.f. of the cell

(b) Define fuel cell and write its two advantages. [5]

25. (a) Give reasons:


(i) Bi+3 is more stable than Bi+5
(ii) Nitrogen doesn’t show allotropy
(iii) Phosphonic acid is dibasic

(b) On addition of dilute ferrous sulphate solution to an aqueous solution


containing nitrate ion and then carefully adding concentrated sulphuric acid
along the sides of the test tube a brown ring is formed at the interface between
the solution and acid. Write the reactions involved to form this brown ring
complex.

OR

(a) A translucent white waxy solid X (that glows in dark) when boiled with caustic
soda evolves a gas Y with rotten fish smell. On heating X at 573 K in an inert
atmosphere a compound Z with iron grey luster is formed after several days.
The solution of gas Y in water also decomposes in presence of light to give Z.
When Z is heated in a sealed tube at 803 K an opaque monoclinic or
rhombohedral crystal of A is formed.
(i) Identify X, Y, Z and A
(ii) Name the impurities that make Y inflammable.
(iii) Among A, X and Z – which is more reactive and why?

(b) Draw the structure of:


(i) Pyrophosphoric acid (ii) Cyclotrimetaphosphoric acid [5]

26. Describe in detail any five properties of colloidal particles. What are the conditions
for a colloidal solution to show Tyndall effect? What is electrokinetic potential or
zeta potential?

OR

(a) Describe the methods used for purification of a colloidal solution. What is a
collodion solution?
(b) Discuss the application of colloidal solutions in medicines [5]
