CHAPTER 1

The Problem and its Background

This chapter includes the background of the study which introduce

the purpose and reason behind the conduct of the study, statement of

the problem, significance of the study, conceptual framework, theoretical

framework, scope and delimitation of the study and definition of terms.

Background of the Study

The place of science and technology in our society is slowing

becoming widespread as time passes by. It serves as innovation and

information-like which is continually disseminated among all for

discovery and for new inventions.

Among of the branches of science which helps people for these

innovations, Physics is one of the most integrated sciences that they use.

It is the foundation of all engineering and technologies many are using

today. And because it is an interesting subject matter and people wanted

to know how does technologies were created, Physics is included in the

curriculum of students in primary, secondary and tertiary level. In

Senior High School, General Physics I is included as a major subject,

especially for students who will take engineering, who is aspiring to be

physicist like Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton who have been influential

in today. It focuses more on matter and energy, their properties and the
relation between them. The journey in General Physics 1 begins with

Newtonian mechanics including: kinematics, the laws of motion, work

and energy, systems of particles, momentum, circular motion,

oscillations, and gravitation.

Dynamic Learning Program or Parallel Class is where the students

are studying by themselves and only assisted by facilitator and where the

teacher will only lecture for 20 minutes per meeting. The 80% of the time

is for the students to do their activity in which the goal is learning by

doing. This program is implied due to some reasons that it is a) suitable

for slow to fast learners, b) low budget but effective, c) lack of funds and

etc. The PHIMNA- University of Pangasinan is one of the schools who

implemented this teaching technique on 2012 and was first conducted to

a mathematics subject, Algebra.

The researchers chose this topic to have a broader knowledge

about Dynamic Learning Program and to know how effective it is as a

teaching technique for student learning activities especially in General

Physics I. They want to conduct a study about this because the

researchers are currently studying General Physics I in the manner of

the said teaching technique. As researchers mentioned, they are

currently studying general physics I and observed that some students

hated and lose their interest because numbers and mathematics are

present. Physics has a reputation of hard mathematics and seemingly

(Giancoli, 2008). However, bearing with those such impressions, their

mind are already closed to the wonderful world of physics has to offer

them. According to Nderitu, it is a common perception that physics is a

difficult subject that students lose interest in it and focuses on subjects

they perceive are easier.

Taking General Physics I with Dynamic Learning Program might

sound great to hear but it’s more interesting thing to try to know how

effective the Dynamic Learning Program is. The researchers come up

with the idea that maybe the students will be more interested if they

have the time more than the lecturer to practice solving equations in

General physics I.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine how effective the Dynamic Learning

Program Teaching Style to the Academic Performance of the PHINMA

University of Pangasinan Students in General Physics 1.

The researchers seek to answer the following problems:

1. What are the positive effects of Dynamic Learning Program Teaching

Style to the Academic Performance of the Students in General Physics 1?

2. Is the Dynamic Learning Program Teaching Style helpful in the

learning progress of the students in General Physics 1?

3. What is the behavior of the students in General Physics 1 using the

Dynamic Learning Program Teaching Style of PHINMA University of

Pangasinan?

The conceptual framework is consisting of input, process and

output. Input is where the profile of the respondents can be seen. There

are 200 respondents from PHIMNA-University of Pangasinan, Grade 12

STEM AM sections, either boy or girl and aged 16-18. Process shows how

the data needed in the study are gathered. The researchers made use of

questionnaires to gather information. Output of the research is to know

the effectiveness of Dynamic Learning Program in the Academic

Performance of PHINMA-University of Pangasinan students in General

Physics I.

Significance of the study

This study hopes to establish a better understanding on

Dynamic Learning Program. Also, the researcher aims to provide

remedy and assistance. Moreover, the findings of the study will be

instrumental for the following people:

Administrators of PHINMA-University of Pangasinan. This study

can help in assessing and evaluating the current status or curriculum to

enhance the performance of students not only in the field of academic

performances but also in extra-curricular activities.

Future researchers. This will serve as their reference to improve

the content and develop the changes that have been done to this study.

This will also for serve as present data in conducting new researches.
This study can be a source in testing a validity of other related studies

which can help them to make revisions on the study.

Faculty of PHINMA-University of Pangasinan. May this study

can inspire them and their students who can hardly cope with the

General Physics 1. This study will also help them formulate efficient

strategies and worthwhile approaches for better leaning of students and

same as them.

Other schools. This study may help them to plan on how to apply

Dynamic Learning Program as their teaching style for secondary and

tertiary students. With the findings and conclusions, may this study will

help them evaluate the different corners of Dynamic Learning Program.

To STEM students: This study can help them to determine what

is the most effective teaching style that they can use in studying their

subject General Physics 1.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study shows the effectiveness of DLP teaching style in PHINA-

UPang students in General Physics 1. There are 100 students in grade

12 STEM AM sections who will be use as a respondent in conducting

survey at the PHINMA-University of Pangasinan campus. This study

focuses on the current grade 12 STEM AM students that has General

Physics 1 subject in first semester, from June 2018 to October 2018.

This study limits ts coverage on grade 12STEM AM students only.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined for the readers to understand

clearer the study of the researchers.

•Dynamic Learning Program- It is a teaching style where the students are

learning by themselves, which the 80% of the time is for them to do their

activity and 20% for the lecturer; a process approach teaching

methodology, stresses on the writing component to keep the students

actively participating in the learning process.

•Academic Performance- is the extent to which a student, teacher or

institution has achieved their short or long-term educational goals.

•General Physics 1- study matter and energy, their properties and

relation between them.

•Faculty- the teaching staffs of university

•STEM- Science, technology, engineering and mathematics
