trucks for specific operations. Hendrickson’s

(1864-1944)
entrepreneurial spirit soon led to a series of
valuable “firsts” that changed the trucking industry.

Hendrickson remained a family-owned company until

acquired by The Boler Company in 1978. Today we are the
leading global manufacturer and supplier of medium- and
heavy-duty mechanical, elastomeric and air suspensions;
integrated and non-integrated axle systems; auxiliary lift
axle systems; parabolic and multi-leaf springs; and bumper
and trim components to the global commercial
transportation industry.

Suspension & Truck Innovation
1926 - Designed and patented our first tandem “walking-beam” suspension.
Magnus Hendrickson, with sons Robert and George, designed a tandem
suspension unit using the now famous equalizing beam with center pivot
to distribute the load evenly to both rear axles and reduce the effects of
uneven terrain. That walking-beam suspension improved traction and
greatly reduced the effects of bumps and potholes on the new six-wheeler
heavy trucks. Since then, Hendrickson has made more than two-million
walking beams.

From the beginning, Hendrickson trucks

were special, with Magnus Hendrickson’s
inventive genius providing the solution to a
variety of customers’ requirements, including
a patented hoist for stone-hauling trucks
and special dump bodies for refuse hauling.

The company became a major producer

of mobile crane carriers and six-wheeler
off-highway trucks for hauling heavy loads.

Although there were new plants, new

machinery, new material and constant
expansion, the business remained a family
run company by Magnus Hendrickson
and his four sons.

During the 1930s, Hendrickson invented

a power divider unit which powered
both tandem axles to drive both sets of
rear wheels. This improvement made

suspensions were sold exclusively to International
Harvester Company of Chicago from 1933 until 1951.
Hendrickson also built fire engines on International
chassis and installed diesel engines in International’s
large trucks.

During World War II, the company built crane carrier

chassis for the Marine Corps, fire engines and other
special vehicles. Hendrickson employees worked to
supply suspensions to International at the rate of
600 per week.

Edward D. Hendrickson (1909 - 1988) was

1950s & 60s president of Hendrickson Manufacturing

Company from 1964 to 1975 and chairman
from 1975 to 1978. Under his leadership, the

Growth Period company established itself internationally as a

custom builder and innovator of truck-related
equipment for special applications.

Hendrickson grew with one of America’s leading and most

vital industries — trucking. Construction of an interstate
highway system in the 1950s and 60s fueled the needs for
vehicles and made rugged demands on components.
This led to improvements on the basic Hendrickson design
including lighter weight aluminum beams and saddles to add
pounds to the payload; air suspensions for protection and comfort;
and rubber bushings to eliminate downtime for maintenance. Its
engineering and manufacturing capabilities offered everything
from a single specialized heavy-duty transport to a complete fleet
of private-label vehicles.

The company, headed by the four Hendrickson brothers, expanded

into Europe, Australia, Canada and Mexico. It became a recognized
source of specialized motor truck equipment, distributing
Hendrickson parts and manufacturing leaf springs as well as
suspensions. By the 1960s, two out of three six-wheel trucks built
in the United States were equipped with Hendrickson tandem
suspensions.
