Clarin cohorts probably listened to gh ' s suggestion to broadcast Radio Earth at 1500 UTC, 11700 kHz,
as on WORLD OF RADIO Oct. 7 . Outrageous! Who in the hell will listen toRE at that time of day? At
least Europeans might have a shot but Americans are not even at their homes at that time . I hop e RE
is going to get their way with the anti..Castro people who occupy most of Clar{n's broadcast time; pr!:
ferably i f 2300 or 0000 UTC will suit them, we will have a fair opportunity to near the Earth without
the worry of poor reception, and La Voz del. CID will have all the. transmitter hours it wants to use,
so there wi ll be much time for Cuban expatria tes to hear what life should be like in their homeland ,
ClD , give the Earth a fair shake and let them have an earlier transmission , especia lly in the- eveni~'
&!:!.: Tbe 1500 r epea t {sometimes, like Sat, a~eat) worked beau t ifully here from the standpe>int of
propagation and reception . Row dare you speak for all Americans? You a r e projecting your own habits
and lack of flexibility on the rest of us. I, for one, am usually home around 1500 , and l f I ' m not,
i t's no big dea l to set up the timer and tape recorder to get Radio Earth. Under t heir circumstances
if they can ordinarily use only one hour per day , they should make it an hour when propagation is op-
timum-- their loyal audience will follow them as long as reception is possible, which it has not been
for weeks, other than occasional anomalies , at 0300; and at this l ocation, Clar6l is usually gone by
2300 , so a broadcast then or at 0000 would be no improvemen t , Make it either an all-darkness path on
a l ower frequency (of which Clar(n is incapab l e) or a n all- daylight pa th on a higher freq uency--a
transmission a cross the sunrise or sunset line on 11 MHz is asking fo r t roub l e . Once an earlier hour
is attained, whatever it be , RE planned to repeat most of the October programming, so you may not
have missed much; I have also noted that as if in response to our complaints, t he group tour t o Cura-
~ao departure has been changed from Philadelphia to Miami. Unfortunately , I'm not at all sure I wi l l
be ab l e to go ; besides, RE never seat me the details requested. I do look forward to resuming my
firs t-weekend- of- the-month OX news report on Radio Earth , when it again become audible. It seems
that NDXE, a possible future home , will not be on the air before March . Meanwhile, RADIO MONITORS
INTERNATIONAL published a carefully planned schedule for its "North American . edition" via Radio Earth
which may or may not come true: Nov 25 Radio Broadcasting in Jamaica; A~R. Asia~ ~Tristan da

1 anyone) the "JCC" of Southeast A~i:a,hi. As always, I'l'l · ~e tuning for the fun of i t ,
and if I find anything interesting, I'll be sure· to let my colleagues know ' about it!
1 Background - A look at the map will give you an idea of what I am treated to here .
Sumatra is just a stone's throw ac ros s t he Straits of Ma lacca , and as such, quite a
few Sumatran RPDK stns are "loca ls" here, audible far into t he mornings and some all
day. But the bands are also confused with numerous Thai and local harmonics','-weird
elect rical noises, assorted othe r stinkers! The shack is in the second floor of my
home, a 40-5Q year-old colonial house on a hilltop a few minu t es out of the heart
of downtown KL. An attic antenna was selected after much consi deration si nce t he
house has been hit by lightning 3 ~ 4 times over t he past few months, and t hat;
coupled with the th reat of de-antenna-ing activ i ties by the troupes of local monkeys
{inost seen at once was three dozen! ) , made an externa 1 wire undes i rab 1e·.
Frankly , si nce I'm already in Ox land, an optima l antenna isn't quite the consideration
it would be back home ... Unfortunately for a habitual "morning man" DXer l i ke me,
the key time t o listen here is in t he eve ning. From 7 p.m. onwa rds {1100 GMT) the
RPOs are audible until thei r s/offs 1440/1500/1600 depending on which part of
Indonesia, and t hen the Indian regionals come in, and if one stays up late enough,
eve ntually the Af ricans and Middle Eastern stns come in when darkness sweeps those
areas . Dawn here i s about 2300 GMT. The problem with morning l istening is that t he
key target here, the Indos , are hardly worth going after i n the local morning since
t hey s/on arnd loca l dawn and then quickly fade as daylight takes each locality,
only the Sumatrans staying audible for any length of time ._ _ ____ -- - - - -- · -
