Sometimes there are people who have insomnia. But as soon as they come for a
discourse that discusses the glories of the Lord , immediately they start
snoring.Maharaja Parikshit on the other hand was extremely eager to hear the
glories of the Supreme Lord.Parikshit Maharaja had made it very clear to
Sukadeva Goswami that he wanted to hear the glories of the Lord in as much
detail as possible. He did not want Sukadeva Goswami to take a shorter route in
trying to describe about the Lord.Parikshit Maharaja expressed his extreme
anxiousness in hearing about the Lord to Sukadeva Goswami.Parikshit Maharaja
goes to explain , why one should hear the glories of the Lord and all things related
to Him , Who can hear about the Lord and why one needs to come in association
of devotees of the Lord. He also explains as to who are the type of persons who
will never be inclined to hear about the Lord. All this is explained in just one verse
in the Srimad Bhagavatham. The Lord is designated by the name “Uttama Shloka”
which means one who is glorified by the choicest of poetries.By hearing the
glories of the Lord one gets elevated from the material conception of life.In
Satsanga we see the world from Krishna’s viewpoint. One realizes the
insignificance of life. When one walks on the road, A structure of a house or a tree
looks formidable and huge. However when one is airborne , the biggest of sky
scrapers on the surface of the earth look quite insignificant. One realizes one’s
insignificance in the arrangement of things. This happens the higher we go.The
lower we are, even small barriers overwhelm us.

One can realize that when one is in the association of sincere devotees and as
one gets airborne by hearing Krishna Katha from the mouth of a sincere servant
of the Lord, one becomes all the more humble and radiant with the knowledge of
his relationship with the Supreme and assumes the position of a servant of the
Lord. As we continue to hear the glories of the Lord we may retain the knowledge
even as we walk out of the lecture hall and there can be a telling effect. As a

1
person travels by flight and compares his state of existence with the objects on the
surface of the earth , one often becomes philosophical and considers his
existence in the piece of land as insignificant. He feels more and more close to the
plans of the Creator. However as the airplane lands, the objects on the surface of
the earth starts becoming bigger and the philosophical bent of mind also
weakens. The person who used to feel his insignificance in the arrangement of
things , suddenly starts becoming aware of his earthly position and soon gets
plagued with worldly thoughts. This is the temporary nature of human
understanding.

To see things properly means to see things from the Creator’s point of view. From
Krishna’s body , multitudinous universes emanate. When He looks at one
individual , one can imagine how insignificant that individual is , in the eyes of the
Creator. At least when one is in the association of devotees and hears Krishna
Katha , one automatically starts seeing things in the proper perspective. This
process naturally humbles us.Actually Krishna Katha is called Amrita. When
demigods start churning the ocean along with demons, they actually do that with a
view to obtaining Amrita or Nectar. When one consumes this Nectar, he obtains
immortality.Amrita gives three things. It is first of all very very tasty.Secondly it
increases your life span.Lastly it makes one strong and powerful. However when
Sukadeva Goswami is speaking to Parikshit Maharaja, Parikshit Maharaja is not
interested in that Amrita. Instead Parikshit Maharaja wanted to drink the Nectar of
the Holy Name,Pastimes,Form,Qualities of the Lord through his ears. This is the
sweetest nectar compared to all other Nectar which is insignificant compared to
the glories of the Supreme Lord. It also gives one tremendous inner strength and
makes one totally fearless. It is a well known fact that even after consuming loads
of Amrita , the demigods were very fearful of the demons. However if one drinks
Krishna Katha, he would become utterly fearless.Demigods were fearful of
HiranyaKashyipu , however little Prahlad Maharaja remained fearless in the midst
of terror of his father.Only a person who has retired from material engagements
and has a heart purified and bereft of material desires can speak Krishna Katha.

Three types of people can take advantage of Krishna Katha. Those people who are
ever liberated, those people who are aspiring to get liberated.People who are
immersed in material activity can also take advantage Krishna Katha. There are
different types of medicines that are administered in various ways. Some
medicines are administered orally. Some medicines are given intraveinously. Some
medicines are given through the nose. However the medicine that cures the
seemingly eternal disease of material bondage is delivered through the ears. Thus
Krishna Katha is that potent antidote to the all binding material shackles.

This medicine unlike other medicines is sweet. For the conditioned souls this is a
medicine. For people aspiring to get liberated, it is half medicine and half
nectar.Such people are like half ripe mangoes.Bitter in some spots.Sour in some
places and sweet in other places. For liberated souls, Hari katha is a juicy ripe
mango.Whether Krishna is in Kurukshetra or Krishna in Vrindavana or Krishna
with Uddhava , in all cases the liberated beings simply drink deep out of the nectar
of Krishna Katha. However conditioned souls show strong preferences of Hari
Katha. They do not enjoy all aspects of Hari Katha with the same gusto. Some like
Raas Leela, some of them do not prefer hearing Bhagavad Gita philosophy and so
on.This indicates their immaturity in Bhakti.

However people who are totally conditioned are like totally sour mangoes.the only
thing that they can relate with Krishna is that , they would also like to enjoy life like
Lord Krishna did, like dancing with the Gopis.Amazingly Krishna continues to
attract the heart of one and all. All envious people are envious of Krishna and want
to become like Him.Still this is purifying to a great extent.Such is the all
encompassing attractive qualities of Lord Krishna. There is a recommended
dosage of Krishna Katha as mentioned in the Srimad Bhagavatham. One needs to
read some verses of the Bhagavatham every day without fail. This will act as
medicine and slowly start taking effect. There is a beautiful verse in the Mukunda
Mala Stotra by Maharaja KulaSekhara.KulaSekhara was a great King and
Acharya in the Sri Sampradaya. In his composition he glorifies Krishna Katha as
Divya Aushadham or “Transcendental Medicine”.Maharaja KulaSekhara , here
addresses the Mind, because the Mind of man is responsible for both Bondage
and freedom.A mind which is subdued is the best of friends and a mind that is
uncontrolled is the worst of enemies.Mind has all the desires. It is the material
desires that has dragged us from the Spiritual World to the Material World.

One cannot remain without desires however one has to change the nature of
desires. Those desires are stored in the mind. Thus KulaSekhara pleads the mind
to drink the medicine of Krishna Katha.Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita , One
who understands the transcendental nature of His birth and activities, upon giving
up the body , does not have to return back to this material world.Such a person
attains His Supreme Abode. This Medicine is actually a Panacea , an All in one
elixir.
