Overall Objective: learning and reinforcing the C Major Scale


(plan for approximately 9 minutes per person)

Han Sol Chang: Breathing


Objective
Students will start with few breathing exercises with few stretching to warm them up for
upcoming lessons.
Procedure
 Light stretching
 Reach for the star
 Crossing the arms
 Curling the wrist
 Breathing exercises
 Breath
 Take one beat of breath and out
 Take two beats of breath and out
 Take three beats of breath and out
 Take four beats of breath and out
 Stretch / Breath
 Twist while breathing

Assessment
 While doing these exercises, teacher will be looking at students to make sure everyone
has proper forms stretching and breathing.

Chandler McLaughlin: Buzzing


Objective
Students will review the aspects of tone production and audiation by buzzing patterns.

Procedure
 Before exercises, students will be asked in review about embouchure formation,
mouthpiece placement, and pressure.
 Students will be given a starting pitch to match and the opportunity to buzz it.
o Starting on the tonic note, the teacher will demonstrate patterns and have
students echo on their mouthpieces.

Assessment
When students are echoing, I will be listening for pitch accuracy and watching for correct
fundamentals. Time permitting, I will ask various sections to buzz so I can assess them. During
this portion, I will also call on people to answer questions that I pose that address what just went
on in the last group to play.

Shannon Smith: Instrument Warm Up


Objective
Students will perform various articulation exercises on their instruments by echoing pitch patterns.

Procedure
 Teacher will demonstrate (sing/play) pitch pattern
o Do-Fa-Do F Bb F
o Do-Fa-Do-Fa-Do-Fa-Do-Fa-Do 2 note lip slur
o Do-Fa-La-Fa-Do F Bb D Bb F
o Do-Fa-La-Fa-Do-Fa-La-Fa-Do 3 note lip slur
o Do-Fa-Do F ↓Bb F
o Do-Fa-La-Fa-Do-↓Fa-Do 3 note revised
 Students will echo the pitch pattern by singing
 Students will echo the pitch pattern on their instruments

Assessment
What do we call these kinds of exercises? -pitch patterns, lip slurs
What is the benefit of practicing lip slurs (specifically for brass)?

Don Gatz: Scale


Objective

Students will prepare for rote song by practicing/learning scale needed by rote song. (C
Scale)

Procedure
 Teacher and students will sing scale, starting from Do and adding one note until entire scale
is sung (Do, Do-Re-Do, Do-Re-Mi-Re-Do)
 Teacher will teach fingerings for each note
 Students will repeat fingerings
 Students will play new note with proper fingering
 Students will then play scale learned so far from Do to newest note
 Class will participate in a call/response exercise with teacher playing leaps used in rote
song from new scale and have class repeat.
Assessment
Patricia Morrison: Rote Song
Objective
Students will apply the C major scale and learn Happy Birthday in C major.
Procedure
Teacher will break up Happy Birthday into different phrases and engage students in a
call/response manner.
Teacher will then address fingerings for when playing the song on their instruments
Teacher will break up the song in separate phrases when teaching the students the song on
their instruments
Students will play the song
Assessment
Hear sections individually and walk around the room and assess the students’ progress.
