Foreword
I find it interesting that God uses “trees” to tell us His Story.

Think about it for a minute. From creation to the fall, from
Bible prophecies to the promise of a Savior, and from the cross
to heaven, God uses trees. He also uses them as a symbol to
teach us about growth, strength, intimacy and life and death. I
don’t know about you, but I’ll never be able to look at my
Christmas tree the same.
Another truth that is represented in a Christmas tree is that we

as believers are part of God’s family tree. Like the evergreen
we are forever rooted and growing in His love.
I was half way through writing this musical when Christmas

rolled around and I saw Ann Voscamp’s new Advent book in
the store. I bought it and was fascinated to read about the
“Jesse Tree.” I had never heard of such a thing, but it seemed
like the perfect way to help everyone keep the focus on Christ
at Christmas. (Basically you create ornaments that represent
events in the Old Testament that lead up to Christ’s birth.) I
tried incorporating some of this in the script, and I hope some
of you might create your own Jesse tree in choir.
Another key element in this work is the “Pay it forward”

theme. It dawned on me one day that God really was the first
one to “Pay it forward.” And we as His children continue this
“Pay it forward” theme when we love on those around us in
Jesus’ name. And thus, we hang our Jesse Trees upside down
to show Christ came to us first while we were yet sinners. (Ro-
mans 5:8) So it’s true, our Christmas gift is not found under the
tree, but on a tree. And forever and ever we will praise You,
Jesus, for Your marvelous gift to us!
Please know I’ll be praying for you. May God bless your min-
istries to His children and may He use this as a tool to add
many young lives into His family tree.

Set

The set requirements for this musical are fairly simple. But please make every effort
to create a fun, colorful and “kid friendly” backdrop for your presentation. It is all a re-
flection of our great God and His love gift to us (Jesus) at Christmas.
First take into account the platform area you will be using and how it is designed. If
possible, place your choir risers to the right and to the left, leaving the center stage clear
for the drama, soloists and any additional choreography or sign language moments you

will be featuring. This is also where the manger scene will take place. A colorful toy store
sign should be hung up high and upstage. The tree lot is in front of the toy store. String

trees of various sizes around the set. Remember too that Jacob and Lucas carry several

trees onto the set.
Next find a spot for the bake sale table; if necessary, it can be off to a side. Place a col-
orful tablecloth with an assortment of goodies on it. Add a bake sale sign with balloons

too. Think about possibly staging it so that Addison and Gwen carry baskets with goodies
to the center to sing “Christmas Bake Sale Boogie.”
Keep in mind that Mr. Carmichael and some of the other cast members will be carry-

the truth of God’s word and a script that follows a group
of kids selling trees outside of Mr. Carmichael’s toy store
to raise money for children in need. Join the adventure as
these compassionate and fun-loving kids demonstrate the
powerful love of Christ to the greedy Mr. Carmichael and
invite him into the family of God.
This festive and fun-filled Christmas musical is created by

kid’s music expert, Celeste Clydesdale and brilliantly arranged
by David T. Clydesdale. The musical brings to life what it means
to be a part of God’s family tree and the importance of sharing
His love with others. Children of all ages will love learning about
how they can be a part of God’s family with the relevant arrangements and
engaging narration.
The simple stage set-up allows for churches with a small or large amount of
resources to experience this fun, festive, and truth-filled musical. Come join
the excitement and experience the power of what it means to revel in God’s
love, grow in our faith, and share His everlasting truth with others.
