AS CHINA RISES, POLLUTION SOARS
By Alan Cowell

Over the past half century, China has become the most polluted country in the world. Sixteen
of the twenty most polluted cities are in China.
China has emerged as a major industrial power. However,
this positive fact goes hand in hand with environmental problems.
In fact, air and water pollution are the most visible environmental
problems. Moreover, nearly 500 million people lack access to safe
drinking water and the biggest cities in China such as Beijing or
Hong Kong are wrapped in a toxic gray cloud. This is mainly due
to factories and communter's car emissions.
As a result, there have been many terrible consequences.
Such as; pollution has made cancer China’s leading cause of death.
Furthermore, many plants and animals have been terribly affected.
According to experts, nearly 40 % of all mammal species are
endangered, among them the last
two Yangtze giant soft-shells.
In 2009, the government started to take different measures such as closing illegal coal mines and
polluting factories. Even so, China still is the most polluted country in the world.

Text:
Thuderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes are severe storms that can cause great damage.
Thunderstorms are the most common kind of severe storm. They form in clouds called thunderheads
—cumulonimbus clouds .The storms cause huge electric sparks called lightning .The lightning heats
the air and causes a noise called thunder .Tunderstorms usually have heavy rains and strong
winds .Some thunderstorms also produce hail .
A thunderstorm starts when intense heating causes air to rise very quickly .A cloud forms where
There is an upward rush of heated air, an updraft .As more and more warm ,moist air is carried
upward, the cloud grows larger and larger. Strong updrafts keep droplets of water and ice crystals in
