Systems of Equations

Specific Objectives to Meet Goals:

Students will be able to graph a line from an equation.
Students will be able to determine if a specific coordinate point is a solution to an equation.
Students will be able to find the solution by looking at a graph.

Ohio Learning Standard: Standard 1 for Mathematics (Make sense of problems and
persevere in solving them)
With the help of their peers, and myself, students will learn to solve systems of equations
through graphing, analyzing a graph and plugging in specific ordered pairs.

Motivational Techniques: Begin with a review of how to graph a line and what an ordered
pair is. Begin with simple review of the game they will be playing involving the systems of
equations.

Materials Needed: Note cards with the questions on them, chalkboard and chalk, students
will need the sheet for the activity, a pencil, and their notebooks.

Procedure for the lesson:

-Class will begin with prayer
-Students will take out their notebooks and be prepared to take notes for the review
-Students will listen to the review and discuss how to graph lines
-I will split the class into groups of three or four
-The students will have an opportunity to walk around the room and work on the ten clues
from the game (30 min). Each clue involves solving systems of equations by graphing or
looking at a graph.
-If the students have questions they are more thank welcomed to ask me questions
-I will walk around and see how they are doing
-When the students finish they will show me their work
-There will be ten minutes at the end of class to work on their homework (10 minutes)

Academic Language: Systems of Equations, ordered pair, graphing, intersection.

Assessment Methods: The homework assigned will be used as an assessment. The

worksheet will also be an assessment of sorts. I will be able to tell if the students
understand the concepts by whether or not they solved the worksheet.

Evaluations of Field Experience Student’s Performance:

I think this lesson went very well. This lesson was different than the first lesson I taught
because my teacher already planned it. In the previous years she has used this specific
lesson for systems of equations. It was very easy to see where the lesson needed to go and
what needed to be taught. I appreciated that she allowed me to teach and use the same
activity she had used last year because it provided an opportunity for my cooperating
teacher to give me specific feedback. Some of my strong points of the lesson were my ability
to explain how the worksheet needed to be done as well as the explaining and reviewing of
systems of equations. There were few questions when I split the class into groups and
allowed them to work by themselves. Some things I can improve on during my future
lessons would be discipline. The students were not out of hand, but many of them switched
groups throughout the activity. The groups were specifically designed so more advanced
students could help those not as advanced. With students moving groups they could not
help each other as well. In the future I will ask my cooperating teacher what she thinks can
help with keeping the students in their assigned groups. Overall I think it was a good
experience and I have definitely grown this semester as a future educator.
