SCHOOL
CHOICE
REFERENCE
GUIDE
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Team Duval,

I am proud of the many opportunities available in Duval County Public Schools. In

addition to a rigorous curriculum, families can also choose for their children additional
areas of focus including STEM, career and technical education, college acceleration,
visual and performing arts, military and leadership academies, gifted and academically
talented, Montessori, and many more.

Whichever school you choose, parent and guardian involvement is critical to student
success. Students achieve when parents or guardians are involved in their education.
Involvement with your child’s education can be easy:
• Establish a good relationship with your child’s teachers. Ask teachers how you can
best reinforce lessons at home.
• Create a quiet, well-lit space for homework; turn off televisions and limit distractions.
• Ensure your child has time to complete homework and let the teacher know if your
child is struggling.
• Make sure you communicate the importance of education to your child. Let them
know that good school behavior and trying their best at school makes you proud.
Encourage your child when they struggle, and celebrate them when they succeed.

Dr. Diana Greene, Superintendent Team Duval represents all the people who are contributing to your child’s success.
As parents and guardians, you are an important part of our team. If you ever have
questions about how you can better support your child, or if you have input on your
child’s educational experience, I encourage you to speak with your child’s teachers and
school principal. Open communication between you, your child and your school team
is essential to a great learning experience. On behalf of everyone at Team Duval, I wish
your children the very best education in whichever school you choose.

Sincerely,
EVERY SCHOOL. EVERY CLASSROOM. EVERY STUDENT. EVERY DAY.
Dr. Diana Greene, Superintendent

Smith and LaVilla School of the Arts) have academic performance standards which must be met for a student to
remain the following year. Other schools may have a school-student contract that must be honored for students to
remain in good standing. Each magnet school is responsible for making this information available to the parents of
students who attend that school. These standards are:

Grades 6-7 - Pass all courses

Grades 7-8 - Maintain an overall unweighted 2.0 grade point average, and pass all courses

In addition, students at LaVilla must earn a “C” or higher in each arts area.

THESE SCHOOLS HAVE SPECIAL ADMISSION PROCEDURES

LaVilla School of the Arts and Fort Caroline Middle School students with advanced training in the arts may be
considered for admission to LaVilla and Fort Caroline MS through an audition. LaVilla and Fort Caroline will hold
open auditions in January. Please contact the schools for specific dates and times. All students who audition MUST
also submit an online application through the Parent/Guardian Account by the February 28 deadline in order to
be considered for admission. All applicants for LaVilla and Fort Caroline MS, including successful auditions, are
processed through the lottery.

There are some differences in the transportation system that apply to specific schools:

In the morning, transportation is currently provided to students attending Darnell-Cookman, Kirby-Smith, Landon,
LaVilla, James W. Johnson, Joseph Stilwell, Young Men’s Leadership Academy and Young Women’s Leadership
Academy on neighborhood buses to the neighborhood high school followed by shuttle service to the magnet school.
Express Route* service is provided in the afternoon.

Bus stops and times are subject to change for the 2019-2020 school year. To be eligible for transportation, students
must apply to a magnet school by the February 28, 2019 application deadline. Once accepted, families may view
current bus routes at www.duvalschools.org. A Magnet Bus Stop Form can be submitted to the Transportation
Department. Stops will be added according to guidelines, and submission of form does not guarantee a stop will be
added. For more information regarding transportation, contact the Transportation Department at (904) 858-
6200. To download a Magnet Bus Stop Form, visit www.duvalschools.org/schoolchoice in the forms section.

*Express Routes have limited bus stops and are located at or near a Duval County public school or other public location
selected by the Transportation Department. The District distance-to-stop policy does not apply to Express Routes.
Parents or guardians are responsible for transporting and supervising their children to and from bus stops.

EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION AND STUDENT SERVICES
Students who are eligible to receive Exceptional Student Education (ESE) services have equal opportunities to apply
for participation in magnet or special transfer option programs. The individual student’s IEP team determines the
specific educational needs of the student and how/where those needs can most appropriately be met. Based on
the educational needs of each student, recommendations for support services may or may not be consistent with
placement in a particular magnet or special transfer option program.
