Plan of investigation (Verbal Abuse)
The topic for my English SBA is ‘Verbal Abuse’. I chose
this topic after noticing that a number of my Colleges in school Page | 2

are victims Verbal Abuse and do not realize that they are victims
since it is often not recognised as a harmful act. As a student of
English, I hope to benefit by developing my skills in analysing
newspaper articles and expository pieces as well as increasing
my communication skills in group work and presentations. I
plan on investigating how this type of abuse can affect one’s
mental well-being. In order to efficiently and effectively execute
this project successfully, I intend to select three pieces of
material that correspond with my topic, meet with my group
members on a regular basis to share data collected and to meet
with my teacher for my individual participation measure. I
intend to collect relevant data by reading, viewing and analysing
an extensive number of articles, photos and videos on my topic
by utilizing the internet and newspapers available. From this, I
hope to expand my knowledge on Verbal abuse and have some
sort of experience as to what the victims face on a regular basis.

Reflection
Entry 1: How the material I have selected shaped my
thinking on my topic Page | 6

The first piece of information that I obtained was a picture. This

picture described perfectly how the victim feels after being abused
verbally; it showed me how the victims feel isolated, unwanted and
unimportant. The teenage girl in the photo seems to be depressed and it
appears that due to being abused verbally it is affecting her emotionally
because verbally abusive statements will have a negative effect on
someone’s emotion and self-esteem.
The second piece evidence was a newspaper article which I
obtained from the World Wide Web. This article helped me to
understand that teenagers and young children are not the only people
being affected by verbal abuse but adults are abused verbally by children
more particularity, teachers being abused by students. On reading this
article, I came to realize that a main cause for the issue is that students
have less respect for government school teachers than before.
Finally, the last piece of evidence which was the video was very
informative and shed light on how the victims feel and numerous ways
to deal with the issue such as speaking up on the problem and getting
help from friends, teachers and councillors
Entry 2: Reflection on the use of languages in the articles
From the three pieces of evidence that I analysed I identified that
each of the pieces focused on different aspects of verbal abuse, yet
Page | 7
several similarities exists between the three pieces.
Firstly, the picture showed a teenager crying and creates a sense of
sorrow because the comments that are around her were said to her by the
perpetrator(s). However, the article has a tone of concern; the author
creates this impression by the use of phrases such as “imagine what
women teachers have to go through” (line 29-31) and “harassment takes
place every day” (line 66-67).
The use of language in the video was different from the language
used in the picture and article. The video displayed a sense of
encouragement to those people who are being abused. The video was
made by someone who is going through verbal abuse because the author
used the phrase “Because no one should have to go through what we go
through.”
Entry 3: How the SBA process helped me to become a better
person.
This SBA process helped me to become a better person by
Page | 8
improving my capability to work in a group and being able to
comprehend with my group members effectively, hence enhancing my
communication skills. I also learnt how to break up complex tasks into
parts and steps and to distribute these tasks amongst the group members
while performing the tasks given for me to do. I learnt to become a
member of a team and meet deadlines agreed on by my group members
and me to accumulate data that was collected.
This project also taught me the importance of time management because
it was essential to manage my time while I was doing this SBA so that it
would not have had an adverse effect on my study time.
Another important skill I obtained from doing this assignment is that I
learnt investigate deeper into the topic while I was searching for my
evidence. Finally, I learnt how to analyse articles, photos and videos
effectively and how to summarize them.
Oral Presentation Plan
My oral presentation will take the form of a prose. The prose
would be an argumentative speech and I chose this form because an
Page | 9
argumentative speech will use logic and evidence to convince an
audience to adopt my opinion and take action. I chose the topic of verbal
abuse because it is an extremely huge issue that our society is faced with
and due to social media is increasing exponentially. The articles helped
to add content to my piece by using the media and real life situations to
show the severity of this issue.
My Prose will contain Formal register language because I would
like to use a perceptive format and avoid slang. Generally, my
presentation will be about specific tactics that government should
endorse. It will argue why it is essential to take the proper steps in
reducing the issue and give advantages if it is initiated. My presentation
will also make use of statistical references, examples and authoritative
knowledge.
Group Witten Report
Our group mainly focused on the effects of drug, sexual, domestic
and child abuse on society so we decided to gather different videos,
Page | 10
audios and printings to support our claim. These gatherings brought us
to have a first-hand experience about what transpired in the lives of the
victims during the occurrence of abuse. Some of the victims expressed
how they were hurt both mentally, physically, felt depressed and
abandoned by society. They had little or no friends and trusted no one. It
was just enough evidence that our group needed to complete our
reflections for the various sub-topics. We selected to speak about
domestic abuse because it warrants attention and needs addressing
follow the numerous reports of the last five years. Doing this topic also
exposes the students of this group to think, understand, comprehend and
visualize what these victims went through and not to be perpetrators of
such acts in the near future.
Different key factors played out important roles in analysing the data
such as the tone of the victim, the body language of victim and the
attitude or behaviour of the victim. Due to the excessive trauma of these
past events, we realized that the victims struggled to have trust in
relationships, making or having friendships and maintaining high self-
esteems and motivation to move on. After most of the affected
individuals had counselling from high professionals, their mind-set had
drastically changed. Their self-esteem and motivation reignited and
restored. We concluded that most of the victims needed assistance in
overcoming their fears and situations but no one were concerned to find
out much about them. If members of society had only been concerned
about their well-being preventative measures would have been organize
to ensure that we end all abuse in Trinidad and Tobago.
