It is narrated on the authority of Amirul Mu'minin, ِ ‫اب ر‬ َ ‫ص ُع َم َر ْب ِن ا ْل‬ٍ ‫; أ َ ِبي َح ْف‬ َ ‫َع ْن أ َ ِمي ِر ْا?

ُؤ ِْم ِن‬
Abu Hafs 'Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) who said:
ُ#‫ضيَ ا‬ َ ِ ,‫خط‬
I heard the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬say: "Actions are " :‫ول‬ ُ ‫ عليه وسلم َي ُق‬#‫ِ صلى ا‬,#‫ول ا‬ َ ‫س‬ ُ ‫ت َر‬ ُ ‫س ِم ْع‬ َ :‫ال‬ َ ‫َعن ْ ُه َق‬
(judged) by motives (niyyah), so each man will have what
‫ فَ َم ْن‬،‫ئ َما نَ َوى‬ ٍ ‫ل ا ْم ِر‬T ‫ َما لِ ُك‬,‫ َو إِن‬،‫ات‬
ِ ‫ي‬, T ‫ال ِبالن‬ ُ ‫ َ ْع َم‬Y‫ا‬
ْ ‫ َما‬,‫إن‬
he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to
Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His ،‫سولِ ِه‬ ُ ‫ِ َو َر‬,#‫سولِ ِه فَ ِه ْج َر ُت ُه إ َلى ا‬ ُ ‫ِ َو َر‬,#‫ت ِه ْج َرتُ ُه إ َلى ا‬ ْ َ‫َكان‬
Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly
thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his ‫صيبُ َها أ َ ْو ا ْم َرأ َ ٍة َين ْ ِك ُح َها فَ ِه ْج َرتُ ُه‬ِ ‫ت ِه ْجرتُ ُه لِ ُدنْ َيا ُي‬
َ ْ َ‫َو َم ْن َكان‬
migration is to that for which he migrated." [Bukhari &

Also on the authority of `Umar (ra) who said:

‫وس‬ ٌ ‫ " بَيْن َ َما نَ ْح ُن ُج ُل‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫ضا َق‬ ً ْ‫ُ َعن ْ ُه أَي‬#‫ضيَ ا‬ ِ ‫َع ْن ُع َمر ر‬

While we were one day sitting with the Messenger of
Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬there appeared before us a man dressed in َ‫ إذْ طَ َلع‬،ٍ ‫ات يَ ْوم‬ َ َ‫ عليه و سلم ذ‬#‫ِ صلى ا‬,#‫ول ا‬ ِ ‫س‬ ُ ‫ِعن ْ َد َر‬
extremely white clothes and with very black hair. No traces
|َ ،‫الش ْع ِر‬ , ‫اد‬ ِ ‫س َو‬ َ ‫ش ِدي ُد‬ َ ،‫اب‬ ِ َ‫ي‬T‫اض الث‬ ِ َ‫ش ِدي ُد بَي‬ َ ‫َع َليْنَا َر ُج ٌل‬
of journeying were visible on him, and none of us knew
him. He sat down close by the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬rested his ‫س إ َلى‬ َ ‫ى َج َل‬,‫ َحت‬.‫ا أ َ َح ٌد‬,‫ َو َ| يَ ْع ِرفُ ُه ِمن‬،‫السفَ ِر‬ , ‫يُ َرى َع َليْ ِه أَثَ ُر‬
knees against the knees of the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬and placed
his palms over his thighs, and said: "O Muhammad! ،‫سن َ َد ُر ْكبَتَيْ ِه إ َلى ُر ْكبَتَيْ ِه‬ْ َ ‫ فَأ‬. ‫ عليه و سلم‬#‫ صلى ا‬T‫ ِبي‬, ‫الن‬
Inform me about Islam." The Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬
replied: "Islam is that you should testify that there is no ،‫خذَيْ ِه‬ِ َ‫يْ ِه َع َلى ف‬,‫ضعَ َكف‬ َ ‫َو َو‬
deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad
.ِ ‫س َ‚م‬ ِ ْ ‫خ ِب ْر ِني َع ْن‬
ْ ƒ‫ا‬ َ ‫َو َق‬
ْ َ ‫م ُد أ‬, ‫ يَا ُم َح‬:‫ال‬
is His Messenger (‫)ﷺ‬, that you should perform salah
(ritual prayer), pay the zakah, fast during Ramadan, and ْ َ‫س َ‚ ُم أ َ ْن ت‬
‫ش َه َد‬ ْ ƒ‫ا‬ِ ْ ‫ عليه و سلم‬#‫ِ صلى ا‬,#‫ول ا‬ ُ ‫س‬ َ ‫فَ َق‬
ُ ‫ال َر‬
perform Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House (the Ka`bah at
Makkah), if you can find a way to it (or find the means for ،َ‫الص َ‚ة‬, ‫ َوتُ ِقي َم‬،ِ,#‫ول ا‬ ُ ‫س‬ ُ ‫م ًدا َر‬, ‫ن ُم َح‬, َ ‫ُ َوأ‬,#‫إ| ا‬ , ‫أ َ ْن َ| إ َل َه‬

ُ َ‫ َوت‬،َ‫ َكاة‬,‫َوتُؤ ِْتيَ الز‬

making the journey to it)." He said: "You have spoken the
truth." We were astonished at his thus questioning him
‫استَطَ ْعت‬ ْ ‫ت إ ْن‬ َ ْ‫ ا ْلبَي‬,‫ َوتَ ُحج‬،َ‫ضان‬ َ ‫صو َم َر َم‬
(‫ )ﷺ‬and then telling him that he was right, but he went on .‚‫ي‬ َ ‫إ َل ْي ِه‬
ً ‫س ِب‬
to say, "Inform me about Iman (faith)." He (the Prophet)
answered, "It is that you believe in Allah and His angels ْ َ‫ فَ َعجِبْنَا َل ُه ي‬. ‫ص َد ْقت‬
َ ُ‫سأ َ ُل ُه َوي‬
!‫د ُق ُه‬T ‫ص‬ َ ‫َق‬
َ :‫ال‬
and His Books and His Messengers and in the Last Day,
.‫ان‬ ِ ‫يم‬ َ ƒ‫ا‬ِ ْ ‫خ ِب ْر ِني َع ْن‬ ْ َ ‫ فَأ‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫َق‬
and in fate (qadar), both in its good and in its evil
aspects." He said, "You have spoken the truth." Then he
،‫خ ِر‬ ْ ِ ‫سلِ ِه َوا ْليَ ْوم‬
ِ ˆ‫ا‬ ُ ‫ِ َو َم َ‚ ِئ َك ِت ِه َو ُكت ُ ِب ِه َو ُر‬,#َ‫ أ َ ْن تُؤ ِْم َن ِبا‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫َق‬
(the man) said, "Inform me about Ihsan." He (the Prophet)
answered, "It is that you should serve Allah as though you .‫ر ِه‬T ‫ش‬ َ ‫خيْ ِر ِه َو‬َ ‫َوتُؤ ِْم َن ِبا ْل َق َد ِر‬
could see Him, for though you cannot see Him yet He
sees you." He said, "Inform me about the Hour." He (the .‫ان‬ ِ ‫س‬ ِ ْ ‫خ ِب ْر ِني َع ْن‬
َ ‫ ْح‬ƒ‫ا‬ ْ َ ‫ فَأ‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫ َق‬.‫ص َد ْقت‬ َ :‫ال‬ َ ‫َق‬
.‫ ُه يَ َراك‬,‫ فَ ِإ ْن َل ْم تَ ُك ْن تَ َراهُ فَ ِإن‬،ُ‫ك تَ َراه‬,‫َ َكأَن‬,#‫ أ َ ْن تَ ْعبُ َد ا‬:‫ال‬
Prophet) said, "About that the one questioned knows no
َ ‫َق‬
more than the questioner." So he said, "Well, inform me
about its signs." He said, "They are that the slave-girl will ‫ول َعن ْ َها ِبأ َ ْع َل َم‬
ُ ُ ‫سئ‬ َ ‫ َق‬.‫السا َع ِة‬
ْ َ ?‫ َما ْا‬:‫ال‬ , ‫خ ِب ْر ِني َع ْن‬ْ َ ‫ فَأ‬:‫ال‬

give birth to her mistress and that you will see the
barefooted ones, the naked, the destitute, the herdsmen .‫ائ ِل‬ ِ ‫الس‬ , ‫ِم ْن‬
of the sheep (competing with each other) in raising lofty
buildings." Thereupon the man went off. I waited a while,
ْ ‫ أ َ ْن تَلِ َد‬:‫ال‬
،‫ت َ َها‬,‫ َ َم ُة َرب‬Y‫ا‬ َ ‫ات َها؟ َق‬ ِ ‫ار‬
َ ‫خ ِب ْرني َع ْن أ َ َم‬
ِ ْ َ ‫ فَأ‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫َق‬
and then he (the Prophet) said, "O `Umar, do you know
‫اء يَتَطَا َو ُلو َن ِفي‬ ِ ‫الش‬
, ‫َوأ َ ْن تَ َرى ا ْل ُحفَاةَ ا ْل ُع َراةَ ا ْل َعا َل َة ِر َعا َء‬
who that questioner was?" I replied, "Allah and His
Messenger know better." He said, "That was Jibril. He ،‫ت َملِيًّا‬ ُ ْ ‫ فَ َل ِبث‬، َ‫م انْطَ َلق‬, ُ‫ ث‬.‫ان‬
ِ َ‫ا ْلبُنْي‬
came to teach you your religion." [Muslim]

built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy

of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Masood (ra), who ِ ‫ود ر‬

said:
The Messenger of Allah (‫)ﷺ‬, and he is the truthful, the
believed, narrated to us, “Verily the creation of each one
of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty
days in the form of a nutfah (a drop), then he becomes an
alaqah (clot of blood) for a like period, then a mudghah
(morsel of flesh) for a like period, then there is sent to him
the angel who blows his soul into him and who is
commanded with four matters: to write down his rizq
(sustenance), his life span, his actions, and whether he
will be happy or unhappy (i.e., whether or not he will enter
Paradise). By the One, other than Whom there is no deity,
verily one of you performs the actions of the people of
Paradise until there is but an arms length between him
‫ُ َعن ْ ُه‬#‫ضيَ ا‬ ٍ ْ ‫ِ ْب ِن َم‬,#‫َع ْن أ َ ِبي َعبْ ِد الر ْح َم ِن َعبْ ِد ا‬

and it, and that which has been written overtakes him, and
‫ع‬ , ‫ى َما يَ ُكو ُن بَ ْين َ ُه َوبَيْن َ َها‬,‫ا ِر َحت‬,‫َليَ ْع َم ُل ِب َع َم ِل أ َ ْه ِل الن‬
so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire
and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the ُ ‫ ِة فَيَ ْد‬, ‫اب فَيَ ْع َم ُل ِب َع َم ِل أ َ ْه ِل ا ْل َجن‬
."‫خ ُل َها‬ ُ َ ‫س ِبقُ َع َليْ ِه ا ْل ِكت‬

actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an

Aisha (ra), who said:

The Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said, “He who innovates ‫ث ِفي‬ ُ ‫س‬
َ ‫ عليه و سلم " َم ْن أ َ ْح َد‬#‫ِ صلى ا‬,#‫ول ا‬ َ ‫َق‬
ُ ‫ َر‬:‫ال‬
‫د‬š ‫س ِمن ْ ُه فَ ُه َو َر‬
something in this matter of ours (i.e., Islam) that is not of it
will have it rejected (by Allah).” [Bukhari & Muslim] In
َ ‫أ َ ْم ِرنَا َهذَا َما َل ْي‬
another version in Muslim it reads: “He who does an act [‫ي‬g ‫خا ِر‬

which we have not commanded, will have it rejected (by

ِ ‫ ْع َم‬g ‫ِ الن‬,#‫َع ْن أ َ ِبي َعبْ ِد ا‬
who said: َ
I heard the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬say, “That which is ‫ن‬, ‫ "إ‬:‫ول‬ُ ‫ عليه و سلم يَ ُق‬#‫ِ صلى ا‬,#‫ول ا‬ َ ‫س‬ ُ ‫س ِم ْعت َر‬ َ :‫ال‬ َ ‫َق‬

ٌ T َ‫ن ا ْل َح َرا َم ب‬, ِ‫ َو إ‬،;

lawful is clear and that which is unlawful is clear, and
between the two of them are doubtful matters about
|َ ‫ات‬ٌ ‫شت َ ِب َه‬
ْ ‫ور ُم‬
ٌ ‫ َوبَيْن َ ُه َما أ ُ ُم‬،; ٌ T َ‫ا ْل َح َ‚ َل ب‬
ِ ‫الشبُ َه‬ ِ , ‫ير ِم ْن الن‬ ِ
ْ ‫ات فَ ْقد‬
َ ‫استَبْ َرأ‬ g ‫ َقى‬,‫ فَ َم ْن ات‬،‫اس‬ ٌ ‫ن َكث‬, ‫يَ ْع َل ُم ُه‬
which many people do not know. Thus he who avoids
doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion
and his honor, but he who falls into doubtful matters ،ِ ‫ات َو َقعَ ِفي ا ْل َح َرام‬ ِ ‫الشبُ َه‬
g ‫ َو َم ْن َو َقعَ ِفي‬،‫ض ِه‬ ِ ‫ين ِه َو ِعر‬
ْ
ِ ‫لِ ِد‬
[eventually] falls into that which is unlawful, like the
ِ ‫وش ُك أ َ ْن يَرتَعَ ِف‬
‫ن‬, ِ‫ أ َ َ| َو إ‬،‫يه‬ ِ ُ‫ح َمى ي‬
ِ ‫اعي يَ ْر َعى َح ْو َل ا ْل‬ ِ ‫َكالر‬
shepherd who pastures around a sanctuary, all but ْ ,
grazing therein. Truly every king has a sanctuary, and truly
‫ن ِفي‬, ِ‫ أ َ َ| َو إ‬،‫ِ َم َحا ِر ُم ُه‬,#‫ح َمى ا‬ ِ ‫ن‬, ِ‫ أ َ َ| َو إ‬،‫ح ًمى‬ ِ ‫ل َملِ ٍك‬T ‫لِ ُك‬
Allah’s sanctuary is His prohibitions. Truly in the body
there is a morsel of flesh, which, if it be whole, all the َ ‫ص َلحَ ا ْل َج‬
‫ َو إذَا‬،‫ل ُه‬g ‫س ُد ُك‬ ْ ‫ص َل َح‬
َ ‫ت‬ ْ ‫س ِد ُم‬
َ ‫ض َغ ًة إذَا‬ َ ‫ا ْل َج‬
body is whole, and which, if it is diseased, all of [the body]
is diseased. Truly, it is the heart.” [Bukhari & Muslim] ُ ‫ أ َ َ| َو ِهيَ ا ْل َق ْل‬،‫ل ُه‬g ‫س ُد ُك‬

The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said, “The deen (religion) is naseehah :‫" ُق ْلنَا‬.‫يح ُة‬َ ‫ص‬ِ , ‫دي ُن الن‬T ‫ "ال‬:‫ال‬َ ‫ عليه وسلم َق‬#‫ صلى ا‬,‫ ِبي‬, ‫الن‬

ْ ُ ?‫م ِة ْا‬, ‫ َ ِئ‬Yِ ‫ َو‬،‫سولِ ِه‬

َ ‫سلِ ِم‬ ُ ‫ َولِ َر‬،‫ َولِ ِكتَا ِب ِه‬،ِ,ِ#" :‫ال‬

(advice, sincerity).” We said, “To whom?” He (‫ )ﷺ‬said,

“To Allah, His Book, His Messenger, and to the leaders of

ِ ‫ت أ َ ْن أ ُ َق‬

none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad

is the Messenger of Allah, and until they establish the
salah and pay the zakat. And if they do that then they will ‫ي ِد َما َء ُه ْم‬T‫ص ُموا ِمن‬ َ ‫فَ َع ُلوا ذَلِ َك َع‬ ‫ َكاةَ؛ فَ ِإذَا‬,‫َويُ ْؤتُوا الز‬
have gained protection from me for their lives and
property, unless [they commit acts that are punishable] in . "‫ِ تَ َعا َلى‬,#‫سابُ ُه ْم َع َلى ا‬ ِ ‫ َو‬،ِ ‫س َ‚م‬

I heard the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬say, “What I have
forbidden for you, avoid. What I have ordered you [to do], ‫ " َما‬:‫ول‬ ُ ‫ عليه و سلم َي ُق‬#‫ِ صلى ا‬,#‫ول ا‬ َ ‫س‬ ُ ‫س ِم ْعت َر‬ َ :‫ال‬ َ ‫َق‬
‫ َو َما أ َ َم ْرتُ ُك ْم ِب ِه فَأْتُوا ِمن ْ ُه َما‬،‫اجت َ ِنبُو ُه‬
do as much of it as you can. For verily, it was only the
excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their

Prophets that destroyed [the nations] who were before ‫ائلِ ِه ْم‬
ِ ‫س‬َ ‫ل ِذي َن ِم ْن َقبْلِ ُك ْم َكث ْ َرةُ َم‬, ‫ َما أ َ ْه َل َك ا‬,‫ فَ ِإن‬،‫استَطَ ْعت ُ ْم‬

Allah has commanded the believers to do that which He
‫ َها‬g‫ "يَا أَي‬:‫ال تَ َعا َلى‬ َ ‫; فَ َق‬
has commanded the Messengers. So the Almighty has
said: “O (you) Messengers! Eat of the tayyibat [all kinds of :‫ال تَ َعا َلى‬ َ ‫ َو َق‬،"‫صالِ ًحا‬ َ ‫ات َوا ْع َم ُلوا‬ ِ َ‫ب‬T‫ي‬,‫س ُل ُك ُلوا ِم ْن الط‬ ُ ‫الر‬

halal (legal) foods], and perform righteous deeds.” [23:51]
and the Almighty has said: “O you who believe! Eat of the ‫م ذَ َك َر‬, ُ‫ات َما َرزَ ْقنَا ُك ْم" ث‬ ِ َ‫ب‬T‫ل ِذي َن آ َمنُوا ُك ُلوا ِم ْن طَي‬, ‫ َها ا‬g‫"يَا أَي‬
lawful things that We have provided you.” [2:172]” Then
he (‫ )ﷺ‬mentioned [the case] of a man who, having ‫ يَا‬:‫اء‬ , ‫د يَ َديْ ِه إ َلى‬g ‫ث أ َ ْغبَ َر يَ ُم‬
ِ ‫الس َم‬ َ ‫ش َع‬ْ َ ‫السفَ َر أ‬

journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty, and who spreads

out his hands to the sky saying “O Lord! O Lord!,” while
his food is haram (unlawful), his drink is haram, his ."‫اب َل ُه؟‬ ْ ُ‫ى ي‬,‫ فَأَن‬،ِ ‫ َي ِبا ْل َح َرام‬T‫َو ُغذ‬
ُ ‫ست َ َج‬
clothing is haram, and he has been nourished with haram,
so how can [his supplication] be answered? [Muslim]

Verily Allah has prescribed ihsan (proficiency, perfection)
in all things. So if you kill then kill well; and if you َ ‫ َو ْل ُي ِر ْح ذَ ِب‬،‫شفْ َرتَ ُه‬
."‫يحت َ ُه‬ ِ ُ‫ َو ْلي‬،‫بْ َح َة‬T‫سنُوا الذ‬

slaughter, then slaughter well. Let each one of you

follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it

said, “O young man, I shall teach you some words [of
advice]: Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you. Be ‫است َ ِع ْن‬
ْ َ‫است َ َعنْت ف‬ْ ‫ َو إِذَا‬،َ,#‫اسأ َ ْل ا‬ ْ َ‫سأ َ ْلت ف‬ َ ‫ إذَا‬،‫تُ َجا َهك‬
mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. If you
ask, then ask Allah [alone]; and if you seek help, then ‫شي ٍْء‬ َ ‫ت َع َلى أ َ ْن َينْفَ ُعوك ِب‬ ْ ‫ن‬, َ ‫ َوا ْع َل ْم أ‬،ِ,#َ‫ِبا‬
ْ ‫م َة َل ْو‬, ُ Y‫ا‬
ْ ‫اجت َ َم َع‬
seek help from Allah [alone]. And know that if the nation
were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they ‫اجت َ َم ُعوا َع َلى‬ ْ ‫ َو إِ ْن‬،‫ُ َلك‬,#‫شي ٍْء َق ْد َكتَبَ ُه ا‬ َ ‫إ| ِب‬ , ‫َل ْم َينْفَ ُعوك‬
would not benefit you except with what Allah had already
ُ,#‫شي ٍْء َق ْد َكتَبَ ُه ا‬ َ ‫إ| ِب‬ , ‫روك‬g ‫ض‬ ُ ‫شي ٍْء َل ْم َي‬ َ ‫روك ِب‬g ‫ض‬ ُ ‫أ َ ْن َي‬
prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to
harm you with anything, they would not harm you except ‫ي‬g ‫ ْر ِم ِذ‬T ‫ َر َوا ُه الت‬. "‫ف‬ ُ ‫الص ُح‬
g ‫ت‬ْ ,‫ َو َجف‬،‫ َ ْق َ‚ ُم‬Y‫ا‬
ْ ‫ت‬ ْ ‫َع َل ْيك؛ ُر ِف َع‬
with what Allah had already prescribed against you. The
pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.” It was .ٌ‫حيح‬ ِ ‫ص‬َ ‫س ٌن‬

َ َ ‫ َو َما أ‬،‫صيبَك‬ِ ‫خطَأَك َل ْم َي ُك ْن لِ ُي‬ ْ َ‫أ‬
adversity. And know that what has passed you by [and
you have failed to attain] was not going to befall you, and
ِ ‫ َوأ َ ْن ا ْلفَ َر َج َم َع ا ْل َك ْر‬،‫الصبْ ِر‬
‫ن‬, َ ‫ َوأ‬،‫ب‬ ْ , ‫ن الن‬, َ ‫َوا ْع َل ْم أ‬

what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And

know that victory comes with patience, relief with

treat as lawful that which is halal, and treat as forbidden
that which is haram, and do not increase upon that [in َ ‫ َة؟ َق‬, ‫خ ُل ا ْل َجن‬

voluntary good deeds], then I shall enter Paradise?” He

lillah (praise be to Allah)’ fills the scales, and ‘subhan-

‫ج ٌة َلك أ َ ْو‬, ‫ َوا ْل ُق ْرآ ُن ُح‬،‫ضيَا ٌء‬ ِ ‫الصبْر‬ ‫الص َد َق ُة‬
hamdulillah (praise be to Allah)’ fill that which is between ُ , ‫ َو‬،ٌ‫بُ ْر َهان‬ , ‫َو‬
heaven and earth. And the salah (prayer) is a light, and
."‫س ُه فَ ُم ْع ِت ُق َها أ َ ْو ُمو ِب ُق َها‬ ِ َ‫ فَب‬،‫اس يَ ْغ ُدو‬
َ ْ‫ائعٌ نَف‬ ِ , ‫الن‬ ‫ل‬g ‫ ُك‬،‫َع َليْك‬
charity is a proof, and patience is illumination, and the
Qur’an is a proof either for you or against you. Every

person starts his day as a vendor of his soul, either freeing

his Lord, that He said:

O My servants! I have forbidden dhulm (oppression) for ,

not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are

guidance from Me and I shall guide you. O My servants,

all of you are hungry except those whom I have fed, so

of you are naked except those whom I have clothed, so
seek clothing from Me and I shall clothe you. O My ‫وب َج ِمي ًعا؛‬ َ ُ‫ن‬g‫ َوأَنَا أ َ ْغ ِف ُر الذ‬،‫ َها ِر‬, ‫ل ْي ِل َوالن‬, ‫طئُو َن ِبال‬ ِ ‫خ‬ْ ُ‫ت‬
servants, you commit sins by day and by night, and I
‫ري‬T ‫ض‬ ُ ‫ ُك ْم َل ْن تَبْ ُل ُغوا‬,‫ادي! إن‬ ِ َ‫ َيا ِعب‬.‫وني أ َ ْغ ِفر َل ُك ْم‬ ِ ‫است َ ْغ ِفر‬

forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall ْ ُ
forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me
‫ن‬, َ ‫ادي! َل ْو أ‬ ِ َ‫ َيا ِعب‬.‫وني‬ ِ ‫ َو َل ْن تَبْ ُل ُغوا نَفْ ِعي فَتَنْفَ ُع‬،‫وني‬ ِ ‫ضر‬
so as to harm Me, and you will not attain benefiting Me so g ُ َ ‫فَت‬
as to benefit Me. O My servants, if the first of you and the ‫ب َر ُج ٍل‬ ِ ‫س ُك ْم َو‬
ِ ‫ ُك ْم َكانُوا َع َلى أَتْ َقى َق ْل‬, ‫جن‬ ِ ‫و َل ُك ْم َو‬, َ ‫أ‬
َ ْ‫آخ َر ُك ْم َو إِن‬
last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you,
were all as pious as the most pious heart of any individual ‫ادي! َل ْو‬ ِ َ‫ َيا ِعب‬.‫ش ْيئًا‬ َ ‫ َما زَا َد ذَلِ َك ِفي ُم ْل ِكي‬،‫اح ٍد ِمن ْ ُك ْم‬ ِ ‫َو‬
amongst you, then this would not increase My Kingdom
ِ ‫ ُك ْم َكانُوا َع َلى أَفْ َج ِر َق ْل‬, ‫جن‬
‫ب‬ ِ ‫س ُك ْم َو‬ َ ْ‫آخ َر ُك ْم َو إِن‬ِ ‫و َل ُك ْم َو‬, َ ‫ن أ‬, َ ‫أ‬
an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of
you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all

as wicked as the most wicked heart of any individual
amongst you, then this would not decrease My Kingdom ‫ ُك ْم َقا ُموا ِفي‬, ‫جن‬ ِ ‫و َل ُك ْم َو‬, َ ‫ن أ‬, َ ‫ادي! َل ْو أ‬
َ ْ‫آخ َر ُك ْم َو إِن‬
ِ ‫س ُك ْم َو‬ ِ َ‫ِعب‬
an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of
you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all to ‫ َما‬،‫سأ َ َلته‬ ْ ‫اح ٍد َم‬

stand together in one place and ask of Me, and I were to ِ ‫ط إذَا أ ُ ْد‬

give everyone what he requested, then that would not
decrease what I Possess, except what is decreased of the ِ ‫ َما ِهيَ أ َ ْع َما ُل ُك ْم أ ُ ْح‬,‫ادي! إن‬
‫م‬, ‫ ُث‬،‫صي َها َل ُك ْم‬ ِ َ‫ َيا ِعب‬.‫ا ْلبَ ْحر‬

ocean when a needle is dipped into it. O My servants, it is
but your deeds that I account for you, and then ‫ َو َم ْن َو َج َد َغ ْي َر‬،َ,#‫خ ْي ًرا فَ ْل َي ْح َم ْد ا‬
َ ‫يا َها؛ فَ َم ْن َو َج َد‬, ‫ي ُك ْم إ‬T‫أ ُ َوف‬
recompense you for. So he who finds good, let him praise
Allah, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no ."‫س ُه‬َ ْ‫إ| نَف‬, ‫ذَلِ َك فَ َ‚ َي ُلو َمن‬

Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
‫ ُ ُجو ِر؛‬Y‫ا‬
ْ ‫دثُو ِر ِب‬g ‫ب أ َ ْه ُل ال‬ َ ‫س‬
َ ‫ِ ذَ َه‬,#‫ول ا‬ ُ ‫عليه و سلم يَا َر‬

upon him), "O Messenger of Allah, the affluent have made ‫د ُقو َن‬, ‫ص‬ ُ َ‫ َوي‬،‫لي‬T ‫ص‬

off with the rewards; they pray as we pray, they fast as we
fast, and they give [much] in charity by virtue of their ‫ُ َل ُك ْم َما‬,#‫س َق ْد َج َع َل ا‬ َ ْ‫ أ َ َو َلي‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫ َق‬.‫ول أ َ ْم َوالِ ِه ْم‬ِ ‫ض‬ ُ ُ‫ِبف‬
wealth." He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
said, "Has not Allah made things for you to give in charity? ،‫ص َد َق ًة‬َ ‫ير ٍة‬ َ ‫يح ٍة‬
َ ‫ل تَ ْك ِب‬T ‫ َو ُك‬،‫ص َد َق ًة‬ َ ‫س ِب‬
ْ َ‫ل ت‬T ‫ن ِب ُك‬, ‫د ُقونَ؟ إ‬, ‫ص‬ , َ‫ت‬
ٍ ‫ َوأ َ ْمر ِب َم ْعر‬،‫ص َد َق ًة‬ َ ‫ل تَ ْهلِي َل ٍة‬T ‫ َو ُك‬،‫ص َد َق ًة‬ َ ‫ل تَ ْح ِمي َد ٍة‬T ‫َو ُك‬
Truly every tasbeehah [saying: 'subhan-Allah'] is a charity,
‫وف‬ ُ ٌ
and every takbeerah [saying: 'Allahu akbar'] is a charity,
and every tahmeedah [saying: 'al-hamdu lillah'] is a .‫ص َد َق ٌة‬ َ ‫ضعِ أ َ َح ِد ُك ْم‬ ْ ُ‫ َو ِفي ب‬،‫ص َد َق ٌة‬ َ ‫ َونَ ْهيٌ َع ْن ُمن ْ َك ٍر‬،‫ص َد َق ٌة‬ َ
charity, and every tahleelah [saying: 'laa ilaha illAllah'] is a
charity. And commanding the good is a charity, and ‫ش ْه َوتَ ُه َويَ ُكو ُن َل ُه ِفي َها‬ َ ‫ِ أَيَأ ْ ِتي أ َ َح ُدنَا‬,#‫ول ا‬ َ ‫س‬ ُ ‫ يَا َر‬:‫َقا ُلوا‬
‫ض َع َها ِفي َح َرام ٍ أ َ َكا َن َع َليْ ِه ِوز ٌْر؟‬
forbidding an evil is a charity, and in the bud`i [sexual act]
َ ‫ أ َ َرأَيْت ُ ْم َل ْو َو‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫أ َ ْج ٌر؟ َق‬
of each one of you there is a charity." They said, "O
Messenger of Allah, when one of us fulfils his carnal ."‫ َكا َن َل ُه أ َ ْج ٌر‬،‫ض َع َها ِفي ا ْل َح َ‚ ِل‬ َ ‫فَ َكذَلِ َك إذَا َو‬
desire will he have some reward for that?" He (peace and

mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto

step that you take towards the prayer is a charity, and

Righteousness is in good character, and wrongdoing is

(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “You ْ ,‫ر َما اطْ َمأَن‬g ‫ ا ْل ِب‬،‫ استفت قلبك‬:‫ال‬
‫ت‬ َ ‫ ف َق‬.‫ نَ َع ْم‬:‫ر؟ ُق ْلت‬T ‫َع ْن ا ْل ِب‬

ُ , ‫ َو إِ ْن أَفْتَاك الن‬،‫الص ْد ِر‬ ِ ْ‫ف‬,‫الن‬
feels at ease and the heart feels tranquil. And wrongdoing
is that which wavers in the soul and causes uneasiness in ‫ َما َم ْ;ِ أ َ ْح َم َد ْب ِن‬ƒ‫ا‬
ِ ْ ‫سن َ َدي‬ْ ‫ َر َويْنَاهُ في ُم‬،ٌ‫سن‬ َ ‫ث َح‬ ٌ ‫َح ِدي‬
the breast, even though people have repeatedly given ٍ َ ‫سن‬
‫اد‬ ْ ‫[ ِب ِإ‬2/246] ّ‫دا ِر ِمي‬, ‫ َوال‬،[4/227:‫َحنْبَ ٍل ]رقم‬
their legal opinion [in its favour].”

be upon him) said, “I counsel you to have taqwa (fear) of
Allah, and to listen and obey [your leader], even if a slave ‫اء‬ ُ ‫ ِة ا ْل‬, ‫سن‬
ِ َ‫خ َلف‬ ُ ‫ ِتي َو‬, ‫سن‬ ِ
ً ‫خ ِت َ‚فًا َكث‬

were to become your ameer. Verily he among you who
‫ا ُك ْم‬,‫ َو إِي‬،‫ج ِذ‬ ِ ‫ َوا‬, ‫ضوا َع َليْ َها ِبالن‬ g ‫ َع‬،; َ ‫اش ِدي َن ْا? َ ْه ِدي‬

lives long will see great controversy, so you must keep to
my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Khulafa ar-Rashideen ."‫ض َ‚ َل ٌة‬َ ‫ل ِب ْد َع ٍة‬, ‫ن ُك‬, ‫ ُ ُمو ِر؛ فَ ِإ‬Y‫ا‬ ِ َ‫َو ُم ْح َدث‬

(the rightly guided caliphs), those who guide to the right
way. Cling to it stubbornly [literally: with your molar teeth].

ٌ ‫ َح ِدي‬:‫ال‬
َ ‫[ َو َق‬266:‫ي ]رقم‬g ‫ ْر ِم ِذ‬T ‫ َواَلت‬،[‫]ر َواهُ أَبُو َدا ُو َد‬
Beware of newly invented matters [in the religion], for

verily every bidah (innovation) is misguidance.”

I said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me of an act which will :‫ال‬َ ‫ َق‬،‫ا ِر‬,‫اع ْد ِني ِم ْن الن‬
ِ َ‫ َة َويُب‬, ‫خ ُل ِني ا ْل َجن‬ ِ ‫خ ِبر ِني ِب َع َم ٍل يُ ْد‬

take me into Paradise and will keep me away from the

easy for him for whom Allah makes it easy: worship Allah,
without associating any partners with Him; establish the ‫لك‬g ‫ أ َ َ| أ َ ُد‬:‫ال‬ َ ْ‫ ا ْلبَي‬g‫ َوتَ ُحج‬،َ‫ضان‬

prayer; pay the zakat; fast in Ramadhan; and make the

the means of goodness? Fasting is a shield; charity wipes
away sin as water extinguishes fire; and the praying of a ِ ‫ضا‬
َ‫ى بَ َلغ‬,‫جعِ " َحت‬ َ َ ?‫ " تَت َ َجافَى ُجنُوبُ ُه ْم َع ِن ْا‬:‚َ َ‫ت‬
man in the depths of the night.” Then he (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) recited: “[Those] who ‫م‬, ُ‫ [ ث‬17 ‫ و‬16 : ‫يتان‬Y‫ ا‬/ ‫ سورة السجدة‬32 ]،"َ‫"يَ ْع َم ُلون‬

forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope,

and they spend (charity in Allah’s cause) out of what We

hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to
do.” [as-Sajdah, 16-17] Then he (peace and blessings of ‫خ ِب ُرك ِب َم َ‚ ِك‬ ْ ُ ‫ أ َ َ| أ‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫م َق‬, ُ‫ ث‬،‫ام ِه ا ْلج ِ َها ُد‬

Allah be upon him) said, “Shall I not inform you of the
head of the matter, its pillar and its peak?” I said, “Yes, O :‫ال‬ َ ‫ان ِه َو َق‬
ِ ‫س‬ َ ِ‫خذَ ِبل‬ َ َ ‫ِ ! فَأ‬,#‫ول ا‬ َ ‫س‬ ُ ‫ بَ َلى يَا َر‬:‫ل ِه؟ ف ُق ْلت‬T ‫ذَلِ َك ُك‬
Messenger of Allah.” He (peace and blessings of Allah be
‫ل ُم‬, ‫خذُو َن ِب َما نَت َ َك‬ َ ‫ا َ?ُؤَا‬,‫ِ َو إِن‬,#‫ ا‬,‫ يَا نَ ِبي‬:‫ ُق ْلت‬.‫ف َع َليْك َهذَا‬ , ‫ُك‬
upon him) said, “The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar
is the prayer and its peak is jihad.” Then he (peace and ِ ‫اس َع َلى ُو ُج‬

of the foundation of all of that?” I said, “Yes, O Messenger

َ ‫إ| َح‬ ِ َ ‫ال َع َلى َمن‬

of Allah.” So he took hold of his tongue and said,

“Restrain this.” I said, “O Prophet of Allah, will we be
taken to account for what we say with it?” He (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “May your mother be
bereaved of you, O Muadh! Is there anything that throws
people into the Hellfire upon their faces — or: on their
noses — except the harvests of their tongues?” It was
related by at-Tirmidhi, who said it was a good and sound
hadeeth.

Jurthoom bin Nashir (may Allah be pleased with َ ْ
him) — that the Messenger of Allah (peace and ‫َ تَ َعا َلى‬,#‫ن ا‬, ‫ "إ‬:‫ عليه و سلم َقال‬#‫ِ صلى ا‬,#‫ول ا‬ ِ ‫س‬ُ ‫َع ْن َر‬
blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
،‫د ُح ُدو ًدا فَ َ‚ تَ ْعت َ ُدو َها‬, ‫ َو َح‬،‫ ُعو َها‬T‫ضي‬
َ ُ‫ض فَ َ‚ ت‬ ِ ‫ض فَر‬
َ ‫ائ‬ َ ‫فَ َر‬
Verily Allah ta’ala has laid down religious obligations َ
(fara’id), so do not neglect them; and He has set limits, so ‫شيَا َء َر ْح َم ًة َل ُك ْم‬ َ ‫س َك‬
ْ َ ‫ت َع ْن أ‬ َ ‫ َو‬،‫شيَا َء فَ َ‚ تَنْت َ ِه ُكو َها‬ْ َ ‫ر َم أ‬, ‫َو َح‬
do not overstep them; and He has forbidden some things,
so do not violate them; and He has remained silent about ."‫ان فَ َ‚ تَبْ َحثُوا َعن ْ َها‬ٍ َ‫سي‬ ْ ‫َغيْ َر ِن‬
some things, out of compassion for you, not forgetfulness
— so do not seek after them. A hasan hadeeth narrated ،[4/184] "‫ار ُقطْ ِنيّ ْ"في سننه‬ َ ‫د‬, ‫ َر َواهُ ال‬،ٌ‫سن‬ َ ‫ث َح‬ ٌ ‫َح ِدي‬
by ad-Daraqutnee and others.

be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, direct me
to an act which, if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and
َ ‫ َوازْ َه ْد ِف‬،ُ#‫ك ا‬,‫حب‬
‫يما‬ ِ ُ‫دنْيَا ي‬g ‫ "ازْ َه ْد ِفي ال‬:‫ال‬ َ ‫اس؛ فَ َق‬

the people to love me.” So he (peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him) said, “Renounce the world and Allah ُ , ‫ك الن‬,‫حب‬
. "‫اس‬ ِ , ‫ِعن ْ َد الن‬

will love you, and renounce what the people possess and
the people will love you.” A hasan hadeeth related by Ibn ُ‫ َو َغيْ ُره‬،[4102:‫اج ْه ]رقم‬

English translation : Hadith 32

ِ ‫اس ر‬
َ ٍ ,‫َع ْن ا ْب ِن َعب‬
On the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be
َ ‫س‬
#‫ِ صلى ا‬,#‫ول ا‬ ُ ‫ن َر‬, َ ‫ُ َعن ْ ُه َما أ‬,#‫ضيَ ا‬
pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ٌ ‫د َعى ِر َج‬, |َ ‫اس ِب َد ْع َوا ُه ْم‬
‫ال‬ ُ , ‫ " َل ْو يُ ْعطَى الن‬:‫ال‬
َ ‫عليه و سلم َق‬

َ ‫ َوا ْليَ ِم‬،‫د ِعي‬, ُ ?‫ن َ َة َع َلى ْا‬T‫ن ا ْلبَي‬, ‫ َل ِك‬،‫ال َق ْوم ٍ َو ِد َما َء ُه ْم‬
Were people to be given everything that they claimed,
‫; َع َلى‬ َ ‫أ َ ْم َو‬
men would [unjustly] claim the wealth and lives of [other]
people. But, the onus of proof is upon the claimant, and . "‫َم ْن أَنْ َك َر‬
the taking of an oath is upon him who denies. A hasan
hadeeth narrated by al-Baihaqee and others in this form, ّ ‫ َر َواهُ ا ْلبَيْ َه ِق‬،ٌ‫سن‬
