INTRODUCTION - 5

Do you ever wonder what might be hiding in your yarn stash, making it
bigger every day? Come closer, carefully lift the balls on top and look:
you might just catch a glimpse of the monsters hiding underneath
the colorful threads. It seems they’re getting ready for a yarn party
and we’re just in time to join in!

Didi the donut monster will happily share some sugary sweets with you, and
Marty is in charge of party poppers and balloons. Keep an eye on your
pattern book though, you never know when the Tippy Toe monsters will
scuttle off with it or if Bobby the baby monster will start drooling
on the edges. And there are many more fascinating guests! They come
in every shape and color, and even though they look scary at first sight,
they're actually quite sweet at heart. 12 daring designers from
all around the world have searched every nook and cranny and they’ve
come up with the most marvelous (and mischievous) monsters.

Switch on your flashlight to see what’s lurking between the pages

of this book. Beginners as well as advanced crocheters will be rewarded
with the spookily sweetest monsters you've ever seen! All patterns
are accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions as well as explanations
of all stitches used, and are easily customizable, so you can make an
amigurumi monster of your own.

Have fun crocheting!

amigurumi, it's best to start with a beginner or easy pattern
and work up to the intermediate and experienced ones.

Pattern structure
All patterns in this book are worked in continuous spirals,
not in joined rounds. Crocheting in spirals can be confusing
since there’s no clear indication of where a new round
begins and the previous one ends. To keep track of the
rounds, you can mark the end of a round with a stitch
marker or safety pin. After crocheting the next round,
you should end up right above your stitch marker. Move
your stitch marker at the end of each round to keep track
of where you are.

BASIC STITCHES
If this is your first time making amigurumi you might
find it useful to have a tutorial at hand. With the stitches
explained on the next pages you can make all of the amigu- 1 2

before you start making one of the designs. This will help
you to read the patterns and abbreviations more comfort-
ably without having to browse back to these pages.

Chain (abbreviation: ch) Chain
This stitch is the basis for many crochet patterns. If you’re
working in rows, your first row will be a series of chain
stitches. Use the hook to draw the yarn through the loop 1
(1) and pull the loop until tight (2). Wrap the yarn over the 2
hook from back to front. Pull the hook, carrying the yarn,
through the loop already on your hook (3). You have
now completed one chain stitch. Repeat these steps as Slip stitch
indicated in the pattern to create a foundation chain (4).

Single crochet (abbreviation: sc)
Single crochet is the stitch that will be most frequently
used in this book. Insert the hook into the next stitch (1)
and wrap the yarn over the hook. Pull the yarn through
the stitch (2). You will see that there are now two loops on 5
the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook again and draw it
through both loops at once (3). You have now completed
one single crochet (4). Insert the hook into the next stitch Single crochet

To increase you make two single crochet stitches in the
next stitch. 5

To make a back post or front post single crochet, insert the
hook from right to left around the vertical post of the next
back post front post stitch according to the picture. Wrap the yarn over the hook
and draw up a loop. Finish the single crochet stitch as usual.

Bobble stitch
The bobble stitch creates a soft dimensional bobble in
your crochetwork. Think of it as a cluster of double
crochet stitches worked in the same stitch. Bring your
1 2 yarn over the hook from back to front before placing the
hook in the stitch (1). Wrap the yarn over the hook and
draw the yarn through the stitch. You now have three
loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook again and
pull it through the first two loops on the hook. One half-
3 closed double crochet stitch is complete, and two loops
remain on the hook (2). In the same stitch, repeat the pre-
ceding steps twice. You now have four loops on your hook.
Bobble stitch Wrap the yarn over your hook and draw the yarn through
all four loops on the hook (3). One 3-dc-bobble-stitch is
complete. Create a bobble stitch with as many dc stitches
as indicated in the pattern.

A magic ring is the ideal way to start crocheting in the 2
round. You start by crocheting over an adjustable loop tail tail

and finally pull the loop tight when you have finished
the required number of stitches. The advantage of this
method is that there’s no hole left in the middle of your
starting round. 3
4
Start with the yarn crossed to form a circle (1). Draw up
a loop with your hook but don’t pull it tight (2). Hold the
circle with your index finger and thumb and wrap the
working yarn over your middle finger (3). Make one chain
stitch by wrapping the yarn over the hook and pulling it 5
through the loop on your hook (4, 5). Now insert your
hook into the loop and underneath the tail. Wrap the 6
yarn over the hook and draw up a loop (6). Wrap the yarn
over the hook again (7) and draw it through both loops
on your hook. You have now completed your first single LUZ ELENA SESMAN BERNAL/luz_sesman@yahoo.com.mx/2018-09-06 12:11

mentioned in the pattern. Now grab the yarn tail and pull
to draw the center of the ring tightly closed (9, 10).
You can now begin your second round by crocheting into
the first single crochet stitch of the magic ring. You can 9

Crochet around a foundation chain

1 Some pieces start with an oval instead of a circle. You

make an oval by crocheting around a foundation chain
instead of crocheting into a magic ring. Crochet a foun-
3 dation chain with as many chains as mentioned in the

pattern. Start in second ch from your hook (1) and work a
single crochet stitch in this chain stitch (2, 3). Work your
crochet stitches into each chain across as mentioned in
5 the pattern. The last stitch before turning is usually an
increase stitch (4). Now, turn your work upside down to
work into the underside of the chain stitches. You’ll notice
6 that only one loop is available, simply insert your crochet
hook in this loop (5). Work your stitches into each chain
Crochet around a foundation chain across. When finished, your last stitch should be next
to the first stitch you made (6). You can now continue
working in spirals.

Invisible color change

1
When you want to switch from one color to the next,
you work to within two stitches before a color change.
Make the next stitch as usual, but don’t pull the final loop
through (1). Instead, wrap the new color of yarn around
2
your hook and pull it through the remaining loops (2). To
make a neat color change, you can make the first stitch
Invisible color change in the new color a slip stitch instead of a single crochet.
Don’t pull the slip stitch too tight or it will be difficult to
crochet into in the next round. Tie the loose tails in a knot
and leave them on the inside.

Fastening off
When you’ve finished crocheting, cut the yarn a couple
1 of inches/cm from your last stitch. Pull the yarn through
the last loop until it is all the way through (1). You now
2 have a finished knot. Thread the long tail through a tapestry
needle and insert your tapestry needle through the back

remain invisible in your finished piece. You can use this
piece of yarn to continue sewing the pieces together.

ASSEMBLY
– Sew the nose on top of the snout, slightly pointing up
and forwards (picture 26).
– Sew the ears to the head, slightly pointing up and back-
wards (picture 27).
– Sew the neck to the head. It should be located a little
bit to the back. Insert a piece of wire (approximately 3
in / 7.5 cm) into the neck area (picture 28).
– Sew the feet to the legs. Make sure the big toe is positio
ned on the inside of the leg. While doing this, insert a piece
of wire in the feet and through the legs. Stuff the legs
with more fiberfill before closing the seam (picture 29).
– Sew the head to the body. The snout should point for-
ward, but you can try different angles.
– Sew the arms to the body, the big fingers should point
upwards.

DESIGNERS - 103

THE TEAM OF DESIGNERS

MJ Carlos (Hello Yellow Yarn) – Australia

MJ worked in the finance industry for 15 years but always had a passion for arts
and crafts. She has been hooked on amigurumi for a few years now and thoroughly
enjoys the creative freedom and creative process of designing toys. Her two young
children are her biggest source of inspiration for designing adorable characters.

Beate Nätzer (BY BaT) – Germany

Beate caught the crochet bug when she
stumbled upon an amigurumi magazine. She
creates toys for her two boys, as well as for
herself: we all love our inner child, after all.

Janine Holmes (Moji-Moji Design) – United Kingdom

Janine has always loved working with yarns and fibers and has a professional
background in both woven and printed textiles. Crochet is the most recent
addition to her list of skills and since discovering the endless creative
possibilities of amigurumi it looks set to remain a definite favorite!

Woolytoons – The Netherlands

Tessa has been hooked on amigurumi since
2005. At that time, there were hardly any Dutch
patterns available, so she took on the mission to
create them herself.

YOUnique Crafts – United States

Noah always loved every kind of art, from doodling in a sketch book to
writing original music. But crocheting offers him something different from
every other art form: it gives him the ability to create an inanimate object
and yet be able to give it a character and a personality that reflects himself.

DIY Fluffies – The Netherlands

When Mariska's sons leave for school and her husband goes off
to work, she gets behind the sewing machine and picks up her
crochet hook. With her boundless imagination, she makes the
coolest patterns for stuffies!

Ildikko – Hungary
When you discover Ildi's designs, they'll
instantly put a smile on your face. She has
a vivid imagination and makes the cutest
pictures of her finished amigurumi.
104 - DESIGNERS

Özlem Yildiz Teke (Ringbeller) – Turkey

Özlem’s sudden realization that she wanted to do a lot more
knitting, crocheting and pottery led her to open up more time for
her favorite crafts. Her mind is always full of new ideas and crafting
helps her to make them real (without having to draw them first).

Dendennis – The Netherlands

As a graphic designer, Dennis breathes design. Thanks to
amigurumi he can bring his cheerful fantasy world to life.
He creates the funniest figures with just a few balls of yarn and
a crochet hook. You might spot him crocheting on the train.

Karla Fitch (The Itsy Bitsy Spider) – United States

Karla taught herself to crochet as a teenager and she has been
hooking up treasures for more years than she cares to admit. While
she has made everything from afghans to accessories, amigurumi
remain her favorite, as they enable her to bring her imagination to life.

Jules Eliot (My Bear and Me) – Belgium

Jules loves quirky amigurumi, hot beverages and

daydreaming. As long as she has her favorite crochet

hook and a tower of colorful yarn, she can bring
her imagination to life.

Maja Hansen – Denmark

Maja was offered to learn to crochet as a child, but thought is wasn't for her.
When she rediscovered crochet years later, she found out how wrong she had
been. It is now her primary hobby and she uses a lot of her spare time writing
patterns. She has even published a couple of books in her home country.

A special thank you goes out to the 12 designers who participated in this book and who were a joy to work with, to Sophie for making
the most amazing pictures, to everyone who volunteered as a proofreader to test one of the patterns (Ashton Kirkham,
Jill Constantine, Kristi Randmaa, Mandy Stephenson, Serena Chew, Shir Reichert, Susan Mackie, Amanda French, Iris Dongo,
Roni Swiderski, Barbara Roman, Debbie Eastman, Annegret Siegert, Shannon Kishbaugh, Sherrie Griffiths, Luisa Willem,
Marianne Rosqvist, Monika Weber, Stefanie Schimpf, Amy Jones, Chantal Stokkel, Julie Champourlier, Martine van Loon,
Bettina van der Jagt, Anita Oleszczuk), to printing house Graphius for their care and to all of our amazing social media fans
for their support and enthusiasm!
