Dear parents,
Progress Tests
This year we are introducing a new system of assessment - the progress
tests. These are shorter and smaller in content than the full exams that
mark the end of each semester; and as such they count towards a portion
of the end of year report card.
The progress tests are short quizzes based upon the previous four weeks
of class work. They will take around 20 to 30 minutes to conduct and
are held during a week of formal lessons.
To ensure that these tests do not interfere with the normal teaching
schedule we will introduce a zero period at the beginning of each day.
We take five minutes from all the day’s periods creating an extra period
at the start of the school day. This zero period will be from 07:15 until
07:50. The majority of the progress tests will be held during this period.
Lateness and Absence
The school is operating a strict policy towards lateness and absence:
● Tests will begin punctually at 07:15 and will finish before
07:50; the test will not be allowed to continue into the next
period. Any student who arrives late for a test has in effect
reduced the amount of time he has to sit his test.
● Any absences on the day must be covered by a full medical
certificate authorising the absence. This must be presented on
the first day the student returns to school. Students may then be
● Absences not covered by a medical certificate: If a reasonable
written excuse for the absence is presented to the school by the
parent within 48 hours of the test, the student may be offered an
opportunity to sit the test. However, he will only be able to
achieve a maximum of 80 % of the possible marks.
● Any absence where no written excuse is presented to the school
within 48 hours of the test, or the reason given is unacceptable,
the student will recorded as having scored zero for the test and
this will be reflected in his report card.
● There will be no re-sits for students who are unsatisfied with
their performance and wish to improve upon their first mark.
● The test paper will be marked and kept by the teacher as part of
the student’s record of performance. The test papers will not be
sent home.
Teachers are instructed not to inform students of their test scores before
the report card has been issued, so please do not contact teachers for this
information. Report cards will be issued on Monday 8th November.
We are adopting this policy because we wish to ensure the progress
tests are conducted swiftly and efficiently. In week 10 we will have our
second progress test and we want to avoid outstanding tests being
carried forward into subsequent teaching weeks.

tests are conducted in an orderly fashion.
