POWER FACTOR CONTROLLER
PR-2D SERIES

GENERAL

The new generation of reactive energy controllers PR-2D, in the 3, 6 and 12 steps version, offer the user, exce-
llent advantages of use, facilitating the calculation of the parameters which determine their performance and
additionally compensating for the possible errors in the electrical connections.

The following may be generally considered:

• The current transformer must be connected at R phase.

• Tension must be measured between R - S phases.
• It does not require adjustments, since the one for sensibility (C/K) is automatic and that of the cosine ϕ is
preset to the unit value.
• It detects the tension and current failures.
• It performs a control of the current, total and by step.
• It records the number of operations of each contactor.

GENERAL APPLICATION CHARACTERISTICS

• A microprocessor-based control, which offer optimum operation of the steps.

• Automatic programming, which prevents erroneous performances due to a bad connection of the current
transformer or of the phases.
• Automatic programming of the connected capacitors steps and therefore, an automatic setting of the C/K
value. Consequently, an automatic connection of the suitable step at each moment.
• Signally by means of led, of the number of steps in service.
• Indication of the connection tendency (inductive - capacitive).
• Digital display of the cosine ϕ value.
• Possibility of modifying the PHASE-PHASE or PHASE-NEUTRAL connection.
• Alarm relay (10 A, 250V).

In addiction, by means of the 3 buttons located on the front dial (up, down, enter) a great variety of informa-
tion may be obtained:
• Automatic, semi-automatic or conventional performance.
• Display of the current value given to the controller.
• Current circulated per step.
• Digital setting of the cosine ϕ value, between capacitive -0.95 and inductive -0.85.
• Setting of the connection-disconnection time.

APPLICATION

To achieve an automatic correction of the power factor, the controller shall measure and record the reactive
power and phase sift of the cosine ϕ, comparing said value with the one preset in order to proceed with the con-
nection of steps.
The following data are required in a conventional controller:
• Power of the smallest step.
• Required power factor (cos ϕ).
• Desired connection sequence.
• Type of connection (Phase-Phase; Phase-Neutral).
• Type of current transformer, and its transformation ratio in order to determine the C/K value.

From all this data, only the required power factor and the type of connection are the data which are generally
know by the user, while the other data must be defined by means of calculations or table which on many occa-
sions lead to errors, determining an anomalous performance.

The controller is equipped with a complex system which has been developed to conduct these calculations
automatically, and to carry out an compensation of the reactive energy in an ideal manner.

In addiction, the philosophy adopted allows to distinguish the direction of the current in the 4 quadrants, in con-
sequence making possible the distinguishing of the current coming from the input or that of a generator connec-
ted to the network. Therefore, it is possible to operate with reverse current.

PROCEDURE

Before starting the controller, you must verify that network is with enough loads (around 50%). The reason is
that network does not become capacitive during checking. The phase sequence must be correct.

Initial Reset: Press simultaneously the buttons UP(+), DOWN(-) and ENTER during enough time until display
shows 8.8.8 and all service leds light (except the leds which indicate the connected steps) and release the but-
tons when it happens. With this action the controller is reset.

STARTING OF THE CONTROLLER

The controller is supplied in a standardized manner, preset as follows:

• Phase-Phase connection (if the Phase-Neutral connection is desired, set nº.1 switch position in OFF)
• Circular connection ( if the series connection option is desired, set nº.2 switch position in OFF).
• Cosine ϕ preset in 1.00
• Delay factor in the step connection: 1.0
• Performance mode: Automatic

Due to safety criteria, the dip-switch type of double switch is situated inside the controller (front printed circuit
board). With access to the same by means of prior removal of the frame and front dial. After determining the
applicable parameters, an initial cycle is commenced, which leads to the performance of controller.

INITIAL CYCLE

When voltage is supplied to de device, an initial cycle is automatically commenced, which defines the gene-
ral performance parameters of the controller without requiring any intervention of behalf of the user, a series of
indications appearing in sequential form on the display:

1- "8.8.8" and all the service leds illuminated. This sequence checks the perfect condition of all the signals
(with the exception of the steps leds)

2- "1.0.0" Indicates the version of software used in this device.

3- "F-F" Indicates the type of connection for the reference voltage(in this case Phase-Phase). If the Phase-
Neutral connection is desired, set nº1 switch in OFF position (situated in the front printed circuit board), indica-
ting the display for this type of "F-0" connection (this operation must be conducted with the controller discon-
nected).

4- "5-A" Indicates that the controller is preset for a transformer with standardized X/5 current.

5- "A-1" Controller set for operation in an automatic system. If the semi-automatic programme is desired,
preset "A-2" and if the conventional mode is preferred preset "A-3".

Once all parameters of the initial cycle have been visually verified by the user, the controller is ready to con-
duct the calculation which determine its performance (the display will indicate "AJU").

In order that the controller may carry them out, it is necessary that the network has an inductive load and
that the current transformer of line supplies at least 0.150 A.

Once the initial cycle has ended, the controller may commence its performance in one of its 3 modalities:
• Automatic.
• Semi-automatic.
• Conventional.

-4-

PR-2D SERIES

AUTOMATIC PERFORMANCE OF THE CONTROLLER

Once the previous steps have been carried out, "AJU" will appear on the display. This indication signifies that
the controller is ready to start the internal calculation process.

After 25 seconds have elapsed, cycled are commenced by the controller for data intake.

Cycle nº1. The controller shall identify the connections made by the user (current transformer and reference
voltage), commencing an automatic sequence of five operation, consisting in connecting-disconnecting one or
various steps in each operation, each of them remaining indicated in the display as follows: "-1-","-2-",...,"-5-" ,
after all these steps have been conducted, the display shall indicate "AJU" , so as to pass on, by itself, to the
second cycle.

However, if during this first cycle, no variation in the input parameters have existed, the reading "Err" (error)
shall appear and the tendency led indicators "ind" and "cap" shall flicker, restarting the operation.

The device shall repeat the setting automatically in 5 tries, and if it is confirmed that during this time no varia-
tion has been produced, the display shall indicate "FA.L" (failure indication since no variation has existed in the
input parameters), in consequence it is necessary to pass on to the semi-automatic setting system.

Cycle nº2. In this cycle, the controller performs the automatic calculation of the C/K value of each sep in 3
sequences represented in the display by "2.1","2.2" y "2.3", all steps connecting on each one of them one by
one.

Once all these sequences have ended, without the need of any kind of intervention by the user, the controller
shall start to operate, directly indicating on the display the cosine ϕ value of the line, illuminating the automatic
performance and tendency led.

READING MENU

By means of this menu the following may be know in sequence:

• The current supplied by the secondary of current transformer the controller.

• The current of each step.
• The preset cosine ϕ .
• The number of operations conducted by each contactor.
• The preset time factor for the connection-disconnection of steps.

In order to have access to said data, the "enter" button is exclusively used (the execution order is made by the
mechanical deactivation of this button).

When the button is first depressed, access is available to the first position which determines the current of the
current transformer secondary, with the second depression, the current of each step and so on successively until
the cycle of five sequences is completed. In the sequences in which various submenus exist (current of each
sep, the preset cosine ϕ value, the number of operations of each contactor and the time factor of the connec-
tion-disconnection of steps) the "up" or "down" buttons are activated.

If during any of these operations which have been described, no button has been activated within 30 seconds,
or all cycles of 5 performances have been manually completed, it returns by itself to the previous work sequen-
ce, prior to starting the menu process.

SEMI-AUTOMATIC PERFORMANCE OF THE CONTROLLER

For a semi-automatic performance of the controller, the current transformer and the reference voltage must
have their electrical connection suitably connected to the device (see connection diagram). With this performan-
ce modality, it will not be possible to discover the current direction in the 4 quadrants.

In order to enter this performance modality, activate simultaneously, the 3 buttons ( up, down and enter) until
the previously described initial cycle starts.

When the display indicates "A.1" ( automatic mode) active the "up" button to pass into indication "A.2" (semi-
automatic mode), which shall be confirmed by activating the enter button.

Next, indication "AJU" shall appear, to pass on, after 30 seconds to the second cycle described in the auto-
matic mode section, in which the controller shall conduct the calculations which determine the C/K value, auto-
matically and without any intervention from the user.

Immediately after, the controller shall commence its performance, with the display indicating the cosine ϕ value
of the line, the tendency and automatic performance led is illuminated.

CONVENTIONAL PERFORMANCE OF THE CONTROLLER

So that the controller performs in a conventional manner, the current transformer and the reference voltage
must have the electrical connections suitably connected to the device (see connection diagram). In similar man-
ner as in the semi-automatic performance mode, in this modality it will not be possible to discover the current
direction in the 4 quadrants. To start the conventional performance mode, simultaneously activate the 3 buttons
(up, down and enter), until the previously described initial cycle commences.

When the display indicates "A.1" (automatic mode) or "A.2" (semi-automatic mode), activate the "up" button
to pass in to indication "A.3", the significance of said indication implying that the controller is prepared to per-
form in conventional manner and that, as in all previously described steps, it shall be confirmed by activating the
"enter" button.

Once confirmed, the number of the selected programme shall appear on the display. The controller is supplied
preset in: in the 6 steps model, with programme "P.16" (1:2:2:2:..2) and in the 12 with "P.22" (1:2:2:2:..2). If ano-
ther work programme is desired (consult enclosed table) select the same through buttons "up" and "down", con-
firm the selection with the "enter" button.

Once the work programme has been determined, proceed to select the required C/K value (see table of values
and calculation examples) the device is supplied with a preset C/K value in 0.05 represented in the display by
indication "c.05". As in all the previously described steps, the required value is selected by means of the "up"
or "down" and "enter" buttons.

As from this moment, the controller commences its performance, with the display indicating the cosine ϕ value
of the line, the tendency and the automatic performance led illuminating.

2.- Current Transformers with the sum of currents.

In case of using a current transformer for the sum of various currents, the ratio of the transformation of the dif-
ferent current transformers must be summed up.

Example: - 1º Current transf. K1= 500/5

- 2º Current transf. K2= 500/5
K = K1 + K2 = 500/5 + 500/5 = 200

3.- Typical examples.

Network voltage 400V Phase / Phase.

6 capacitor steps with a power per step of 50 KVAR.
Transformation ratio of the current transformer 1000/5 A

K = 1000/5 = 200
C = 50 KVAR
C/K = 50/200 = 0.25
Response sensitivity: 1 x 0.25 = 0.25A
Recommended:

a) In case that C/K value lower than 0.1 A

Highest step power or else a greater reduced transformation ratio.

b) In case that C/K value greater than 1A

Use inferior power in each step or else use a greater ratio in the current transformer.

MANUAL CONECTION OF STEPS

In order to connect the steps in "manual" form, activate the "up" button until all the signal elements stop ligh-
ting ( with the exception of the steps leds), immediately after, when said button stops being activated, it passes
in to manual service indicating by means of the flicker of the pertinent signal led and with the display indicating
the cosine ϕ of the line.

The connection or disconnection process of the steps is conducted by means of the "up" or "down" buttons.
In order to return to the "automatic" form of work, activate the "enter" button.

BREAKDOWN SIGNAL DEVICE

By means of the flicking of the tendency and de-excitation leds of a relay with the free power output contact
(alarm relay) the following breakdowns are drawn attention to:

• Failure of the measuring current (also indicated on the display with "E.I")
• Failure of the measuring voltage (also indicated on the display with "E.U")
• Insufficient power of the steps.
