JAN 18, 2018 – SMOKE STACK, CHIMNEY AND COMPRESSORS

Name: ___________________________________________________________Course- Section: __________________________

1. The gas density flowing through the chimney is 0.75 kg/m3 and air density is 1.15 kg/m3. If the driving pressure is
250 Pa, determine the height of the chimney in meters.
a. 60. 11 b. 61.95 c. 63.71 d. 65.04

2. A boiler uses 2500 kg of coal per hour and air required for combustion is 15 kg air kg coal. If ash loss is 10%,
determine the mass of gas entering the chimney in kg/hr.
a. 42,250 b. 45,665 c. 40,005 d. 39,255

3. The actual velocity of gas entering in a chimney is 8 m/s. The gas temperature is 250C and the pressure is 98 kPa
with a gas constant of 0.287 kJ/kg-K. Determine the chimney diameter if the mass is 50,000 kg/hr.
a. 1.40 m b. 1.35 m c. 1.55 m d. 1.95 m

4. A coal fired steam boiler uses 3000 kgs of coal/hr. Air required for combustion is 15.5 kg air/kg coal at Barometric
pressure of 98 kPA. The flue gas has a temperature of 285 0C and a MW of 30. Assuming an ash loss of 11%,
allowable gas velocity of 7.5 m/s, find the diameter of the chimney in meters.
a. 0.55 b. 0.85 c. 1.55 d. 1.91 m

5. A steam boiler plant consumes 9000 kg of coal/hr and produces 20 kg of dry flue gas/kg of coal fired. Outside air
temperature is 320C, temperature of flue gas entering chimney is 3430C and average temperature of dry flue gas in
the chimney is 2600C. The gage fluid density is 994.78 kg/m3 and the theoretical draft of 2.286 cm of water at the
base of the chimney is needed when the barometric pressure is 760 mm Hg. Assume gas constant is the same that
with the air. Determine the height of the chimney in meters.
a. 0.55 b. 0.85 c. 1.55 d. 1.91 m

6. Determine the size of cylinder for double acting compressor of 40 kW in which the air is drawn in at 1 bar and 100C,
and compressed according to the law pV1.2 = constant to 6 bar at 100 rpm. Average piston speed is 150 m/min.
Neglect clearance volume.

7. A double acting compressor with a piston displacement of 0.05 m3 per stroke operates at 500 rpm. The clearance is
5% and it receives air at 100 kPA, discharge it at 100 kPa. The compression is polytropic , pV1.35 = c. determine the
power required and air discharge in m3/s

8. A two stage air compressor with complete intercooling delivers air to the main pressure of 30 atm, the suction
condition being 1 atm and 270C. If both cylinders have the same stroke, find the ratio of the cylinder diameters for
the efficiency of compression to be a maximum. Assume the index of compression to be 1.3

9. A single stage, single acting air compressor delivers 15 m 3/min of ree air from 1 bar to 8 bars at 300 rpm. The
clearance volume is 6% of the stroke volume and compression and expansion follow the law pv 1.3=constant.
Calculate the diameter and stroke of the compressor. Take L=1.5D. The temperature and pressure of air at suction
are the same as atmospheric air.

10. A four cylinder double acting compressor is required to compress 25 m 3/min of air at 1 bar and 250C to a pressure
of 15 bar. Determine the size of the motor required and the cylinder dimensions if the following additional data is
given, Clearance volume = 5%, L/D = 1.2, RPM = 300, Effymechl = 80% and value of index = 1.35
