INTRODUCTION

Teaching techniques prepare or generate a chain of teaching learning process.

Teaching method is an abstract concept while techniques of teaching help in using a
certain method of teaching. A method of teaching determines the style or way of
presentation of content with techniques assist in doing so. A teaching method reveals that
how a content is presented in classroom. While techniques indicate with what activities of
teaching. Techniques are physiological as well as logical in nature. Sometimes nature of
content is most important in employing a particular technique of teaching. For example
historical facts are taught by descriptive techniques. While scientific concepts are
presented by explanation technique. A method includes several techniques of teaching
and one technique employs several maxims of teaching.

Strategy refers to overall plan developed by a teacher to satisfy his instructional

objectives. In planning and instruction strategy the teacher will use both techniques and
modes. A variety of techniques and modes can be orchestrated so as to produce a variety
of outcomes and to satisfy student interest. A mode refers to a particular style of
instruction adopted by the teacher. Technique will be used to describe specific
instructional devices employed to teach lessons. Method refers to a particular
philosophical position that a teacher adopts towards himself, his subject and his students.
A teaching method subsumes modes, techniques and strategies. Mode of teaching is more
general plan of action while strategy of teaching is more clear cut specific pre planned
activities.

CONTENT

INVESTIGATORY LEARNING
Meaning
A commitment to an investigative learning approach by a school demands upon both
teachers and pupils to adopt a different role to traditional practice.

Investigative learning concerns itself with process by which learning takes place.

 The teaching methods are found equally effective with the usual methods of
teaching.
 It became doubly recognize because of the advent so called “Era of educational
technology”
 Teaching methods not popular as Discussion, Lecture, Reporting and etc.

5
A.Laboratory Technique
Students actively manipulates and study a given upon which a given problem lies.

Types of Laboratory Technique

1. Laboratory Exercise
2. Laboratory Investigation

Laboratory Exercise
Designed to help students to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills.
Example: Speech exercises commonly done in the speech laboratory.

Laboratory Investigation
Deeper and more serious undertaking that requires careful planning.
Example: A college student may involve himself in a co relational study whether
leadership skills and academic performance are directly related.

Steps of Laboratory Technique

 Pre Laboratory – Preparation, Reminders and Familiarization.

 Active Proper – actual laboratory work is done by the students.
 Post-Laboratory-Discussion – answering of questions, giving of actual
observation, analysis and comparison of data, discussion of the application.

Teachers Role during the Laboratory work

1. He allows students to learn for themselves by solving the problems they encounter
in their work.
2. After purposes have been defined and procedures outlined, the place of the
teacher is in the background.
3. He may move from group to group giving encouragement, clarifying procedures,
straightening out the facts and stimulating fast working students to undertake new
problems.
4. He should try to avoid interrupting the work of his class with announcements.

6
B. Problem - Solving Technique
Requires a learner to work actively in the solution of a difficulty or an undesirable
situation.

C. Research Technique
It is an careful and organised study designed to serve a specific purpose.

Types of Research Activities

1. Interviewing a chosen subject.
2. Making a simple survey.
3. Constructing the historical episode of an individual, a community or an institution.
4. Doing a simple experiment.

Steps doing a research

 Preparing for the research book.
 Collecting and gathering data.
 Organizing the data obtained.
 Analysing and interpreting the data organised.
 Making a formal report of research done.

D.Experimenting Technique
It is methodical trial and error procedure carried out with the goal of verifying,
falsifying or establishing the validity of a hypothesis. Experiments provide insight into
cause and effect by demonstrating what outcomes occurs when a particular factor is
manipulated.

Steps in Experimenting Technique

 Designing an experiment.
 Preparing for an experiment.
 Conducting the experiment.
 Obtaining the results of the experiment.

7
E. Field Study Technique
Students investigate a given situation by being a part or an integral component of it.

Steps of Field Study Technique

 Preparation.
 Actual Investigation.
 Making a formal report.
 Class reporting.

Conclusion
The Students in today’s classroom have grown up with the technology as a way of
life, and accessible literally at their fingertips at very young ages.
Teachers are hard pressed to complete with the excess of available information and
entertainment, let alone keep up with the ever changing pace. Investigatory teaching
provides the opportunity for the students to play an active role in their learning process in
a student – centred environment, engage in variety of technological resources and in the
process, develop - higher level thinking skills.

21st century schools should we the above quote to describe how educators on shift
from 19th century education methodologies into 231st century to accomplish what was
once thought impossible – technology driven, student – centred classrooms. Our students
are “digital natives” while educators are “digital immigrants”. The investigatory approach
juxtaposes the student with technology is a symbiotic relationship with achievement
results that would put a sparkle in the eye of any principal.
