148-007-01 Pressure Vacuum switch Instructions

BACKGROUND
The Qualitrol Series The 148 series pressure and vacuum switches are designed to provide operating
control, limit, or alarm functions for any pressure application whose media and environment are compatible
with the component materials, and require a waterproof, dust tight and corrosion resistant enclosure for
indoor and outdoor application.

Construction and Operation:

As pressure is applied to the sensing port contained in the die cast flange, a pressure sensing
diaphragm/plate assembly deflects, acting against a load spring. A plunger connected to the diaphragm
moves to actuate or de-actuate a snap switch. A barrier strip mounted to the housing transfers switch
signals to the control equipment. A waterproof cover protects the components from standard
environmental hazards.

CALIBRATION AND ADJUSTMENT:

Attach a pressure source to the 3/8 NPT lower sensing port. Raise or lower the pressure to achieve the
desired set range. Attach test light clips to the barrier strip per the model drawing schematic. To adjust the
set point, turn the 1/2" hex adjusting nut until desired set point is achieved. With positive pressure
switches, turn the nut clockwise to increase the actuation set point, counterclockwise to decrease. With
vacuum switches, turn the adjusting nut clockwise to decrease the set point towards atmospheric
pressure, counterclockwise to increase. After adjustment, cycle the pressure through the set points to
verify operation.

INSTALLATION:
The Qualitrol pressure vacuum switch can be mounted in any orientation, but we recommend
mounting it vertically as shown. If the unit is being mounted in a cabinet you can use two ¼” [6mm]
self tapping screws located 4.63” [117.6mm] apart. If you are mounting to the side of the
transformer tank use weld studs instead with nuts and washers. After the switch is mounted it
needs it has to be connected to the gas space on top of the transformer oil through the use of pipes..
The piping should be attached to the 3/8 NPT opening on the bottom of the gauge. Make sure to use
either Teflon tape of pipe sealant on the threads to ensure a good seal. To wire the gauge remove
the four screws holding the cover in place. Install a 1/2-14 cable grip on the right side of the case.
Loosen the cap on the grip and install your cable through the gland. Strip back about 4” [100mm] of
the out cable jacket and ¼” [6.3mm] on the individual wires. Twist the wire together and install crimp
on lugs if required. Loosen the upper screws on the terminal block and wire it per the schematic on
the model drawing. Tighten down the screws and then reinstall the cover.
