 4.5.2: Identify and classify wastes that result from human activity.
 4.5.11: Identify actions that individuals and groups can take to minimize the
production of wastes, to recycle or reuse wastes and to ensure the safe
handling and disposal of wastes.
 4.5.12: Develop and implement a plan to reduce waste, and monitor what
happens over a period of time.
Language Arts:
 1.1.1 – Compare new ideas, information and experiences to prior knowledge
and experiences.
 1.1.3 – Share personal responses to explore and develop understanding of
oral, print and other media texts.
 2.1.1 – Use ideas and concepts, developed through personal interests,
experiences and discussion, to understand new ideas and information.
 2.1.4 – Comprehend new ideas and information by responding personally and
discussing ideas with others.
 2.1.7 – Use text features, such as headings, subheadings and margin
organizers, to enhance understanding of ideas and information.
 2.2.1 – Experience oral, print and other media texts from a variety of cultural
traditions and genres, such as personal narratives, plays, novels, video
programs, adventure stories, folk tales, informational texts, mysteries, poetry
and CDROM programs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1) Recognize how important it is to take care of our planet through the book Here
We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth by Oliver Jeffers.
2) Restate four facts about the earth based on the information from the reading.
3) Develop a plan on how they can help the earth.
ASSESSMENT

 Walk around the room to see
what students are coming up with.
This will also be a good time for
students to ask questions. (L.O #

Written/Performance Assessments:
 Students will implement ideas from the book and complete two charts. This is a
formative assessment to show how they think they can help the planet.

PROCEDURE
Introduction:
Hook/Attention Grabber: Today we are going to integrate literacy and science. Why is
it important for us to take care of our planet?

Assessment of Prior Knowledge: See what students answer in response to the hook.

Expectations for Learning & Behaviour:

 When I am talking, pencils should be down so students are not distracted.
Ashley Pasiciel

 No talking to your neighbour during the activities – there will be plenty of time
for discussion during the group portion of the class. If you want to same
something make sure you raise your hand.
 Eyes on me when I am teaching.
 Do not touch materials until told to do so.
 Be respectful of your peers.

Advance Organizer/Agenda:
 Copy items in advance
Transition to Body:
Body:
Key Questions:
 Why is it important to take care of our planet?
 How does the waste produced from our day to day activities impact the world
around us?
 How can we help our earth?
 What are some facts about our planet?
 Why should we look after our planet?
Learning Activity #1: Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth by Oliver
Jeffers. (L.O 1, 2 & 3).
 Group reading: I will read the book aloud to the class.
 As we go through the different ideas in relation to our planet we will discuss
them in further detail.
 Student may have out a scarp piece of paper and list the various facts about
the earth as mentioned in the book. This will help them with the next activity.
Assessments/Differentiation:
 Make sure all students feel included in this activity.
 Ask different students to put in their input during discussion.
 Ask questions to further students understanding.

Key Questions:
 Why is it important to take care of our planet?
 How does the waste produced from our day to day activities impact the world
around us?
 How can we help our earth?
 What are some facts about our planet?
Why should we look after our planet?
Learning Activity #2: Facts About the Earth (L.O #1, 2 & 3).
 Students will take the facts from the reading, and complete a chart.
 Students will write down 4 facts about the earth. Hopefully, this activity will get
students thinking about the impact they have on our planet. To accompany
their facts students will also draw a picture.
Assessment/Differentiation:
 Students will write down their fact and draw a picture – this will reach different
types of learners in the classroom.
Ashley Pasiciel

 Students will be able to reference any notes they took.

 I also will pass the book around the classroom – this will allow students to get
ideas if they are stuck.
 This activity is designed to get students thinking deeper about why we want to
help protect our planet.

Key Questions:
 Why is it important to take care of our planet?
 How does the waste produced from our day to day activities impact the world
around us?
 How can we help our earth?
 What are some facts about our planet?
Why should we look after our planet?
Learning Activity #3: 4 Ways I Can Help Our Earth (L.O #1, 2 & 3).
 Students should feel inspired after the reading and previous learning activity.
 Students will brainstorm ideas of how they can help our earth.
 Similar to the last activity, students will write a description and draw a picture to
accompany their idea.
 If students are stuck we can brainstorm activities as a class first.
Assessment/Differentiation:
 Students will write their idea down and draw a picture – this will reach different
types of learners
 We will have a class discussion to brainstorm ideas.
 This activity is designed to get students thinking deeper about why we want to
help protect our planet.

Sponge Activity: Finish title page

Closure:
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Good work! You all clearly recognize that it is
important to help our planet! What are some way you are going to try to help our
planet?

Transition to Next Lesson: Next class we will dive into what kinds of things we throw
about in our classroom.
