Sawmill drive belt

Does anyone have a good source for flat drive belts???

We need about 75' doubled and endless, 8" wide, 5 ply should be enough.

About the best I have found so far is hard silver duck, FS x FS

Thanks

Re: Sawmill drive belt

The Pioneer Engineer’s Club of Rushville, IN used Cincinnati Belting Transmission.

We purchased four 5ply belts and I think they worked great at our show last
weekend.

Re: Sawmill drive belt

Listing all of these places is great because I would like to have a belt. What is funny though is a friend of mine
does a lot of business with a belting company and he bought a nice belt for his steam engine for $100.00 so I
called them up and asked for the same belt and they wanted $400.00 so I didn't order one. I guess the old
saying of who you know is correct.

Re: Sawmill drive belt

So far Dunham Rubber & Bowman Belts have at least been knowledgeable about flat drive belts.

Several places I checked with were about clueless on the subject.

Re: Sawmill drive belt

I believe Bowman serves the Amish community. Tom Diehl would know "the rest of the story."

They had good belt dressing also.

What size & type of belt???? 400.00 does not buy a lot of new belt.

We are looking at near triple of your quote......

Re: Sawmill drive belt

Had to save this thread to my favorites list with a back up copy on my flash drive for future references.

We've been using the same belt for 44 years on the sawmill, pulled up pretty tight and still dragging on the
ground once in while when stretched under a heavy load. After seeing the YouTube video of Beth breaking a
belt on the sawmill, it makes me wonder how many more years we'll get out of it. It was a used belt already
back in 1970.

If I remember correctly, there were a couple belts broken that year (?).... Is that right Beth ? Were they both
(or all) old ones, and how are the new ones holding up so far in comparison ?

6" wide 5 ply and 50' long so there is almost 25' between the pulleys. It is a belt made specifically for power
transmission and is a sand color.

When I called it was $8.00 / foot plus shipping. It was going to be $400 + tax and $25 shipping.

Re: Sawmill drive belt

Here are the clips that OTTO was referring to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-nOIFegmB8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnfQ8F_zdtY

The belts were sub par and the Port was more than they could handle. They broke 3 times.

The new Bowman belt on the NTA sawmill was delightful (it did need a little more belt dressing though) and held
well as we sawed those oak logs

Re: Sawmill drive belt

Weaver Leather in Frederickburg makes the liquid belt dressing. Honey seems to be the choice of a certain
sawyer around here.

Call Chris at Dunham 800-876-5340 or

Bowman Belts 330-893-2089

Their prices are in the 5.00 range for 8" belt.

With shipping these guys get our into an affordable range

These were endless, 10"wide, and were right at $6.00 foot. Very nice belts.

Thanks.

I hadn't seen that second clip before.

Here's a few still shots I snapped of the computer screen from the first video showing the belt flying back at the
engine..... And at Beth. Luckily it didn't fly back quite that far before dropping to the ground.
