Man-Booker Prize – The award is to “to promote the finest in fiction by


rewarding the best novel of the year written in English and published in the

V.S. Naipaul – The Prized was awarded in 1971
for his Novel – “In a Free State”. The book is
constructed of three interrelated stories. Each of

imperialism, in different parts of the world and
at different times, on the characters

2) Salman Rushdie’s famous Novel “Midnight’s


Children” was awarded the Prize in 1981. 25
years later, the novel won the “Booker of
Bookers”—the best book awarded the prize
during its first 25 years. It deals with India's
transition from British colonialism to
independence and the partition of British India.

3) Arundhati Roy’s “God of Small Things” was


awarded the Prize in 1997. The novel follows
two seven-year-old twins, Estha and Rahel, as
their individual experiences begin to reflect
upon larger political unrest in India.

4) “The Inheritance of Loss” written by Kiran


Desai was awarded the Prize in 2006. The book
grapples with legacy of British colonization on
the Indian subcontinent and the losses that
have resulted.

5) “The White Tiger” by Arvind Adiga was


awarded the prestigious prize in 2008. The
novel provides a darkly humorous
perspective of India’s class struggle in a
globalized world as told through a
retrospective narration from Balram Halwai,
village boy.
