A Development Approach to Migration and Displacement

Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

I. One of the difficult concept for me is the idea of migration itself, the idea of
people will migrate to other places because of better opportunity, I mean they
can have a better opportunity by themselves and not by the places they are
in.
II. Another difficult concept for me is that immigrants have a big affect to the
status of one’s country, the are totally affecting the economic growth of the
country.
III. Lastly is the idea that refugees needed to migrate to another country for them
to have a better live, like why can’t their own government find ways on how
they can have a better living in their own country.

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that

The meaning of migration is just a shallow definition that migration is just moving
to one country from another to permanently live in such country, like a family
is migrating in a country because of some errands, meaning they will live there
permanently.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
That there are deeper meaning of migration, and migration means that
movement from one part of something to another, it is also defined as
movement of people to a new area or country in order to find work or better
living conditions. Also, I now realized that any form of travel that will go to
another places can be defined as migration.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that

Refugees are bad people. According to the one article I have read before,
false allegations mostly mention that refugees were harassing or raping
women. Under the category terrorism, the claims about terrorist organizations
appeared to center around refugees, and asserted that they supported or
encouraged organizations such as ISIS in the countries to which they
emigrated. Under the category state help, it is asserted that the state was
helping refugees and immigrants more than it helped their own citizens. Under
the category of religion, there were assertions that refugees were involved in
acts of disrespect for Christmas or attacked churches.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
That not all refuges are bad people. We can define refuges as a person who
has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or
natural disaster. Refugees are the people that are war victims, they are forced
to leave their own houses just to escape war and to have a better living. A
refugee, generally speaking, is a displaced person who has been forced to
cross national boundaries and who cannot return home safely. Such a person
may be called an asylum seeker until granted refugee status by the
contracting state or the UNHCR if they formally make a claim for asylum.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought there are no
certain effect on one country if the number of migrants in their area are
increasing. Many people can easily move for one country to another, the can
easily live from on country to another. People are being migrants or they move
from one country to another because they know that certain opportunities
waits them in the certain country.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
That there are big effect on the country’s status if the number of migrants in
their nation are increasing. Have a large number of migration can have a
positive and negative to a country’s status like for example in economic
growth, human and social welfare, and environmental sustainability. But it will
have a positive effect if the country and its people are developing each other
at the same time.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want
more explanations about?
• Does migration always brings good effect on the country that has
increased migration status?
• Should migrants not stay in their own countries?
• Do developed countries have a responsibility to welcome refugees from
parts of the world that are experiencing difficulties?
