Problems concerning RWH:-
1. Insects / Pest – particularly mosquitoes breeding in water.

• Studies have shown that mosquitoes can travel deep through gutter systems.
Rain water has enough nutrients to support the growth of larvae to adult
mosquitoes.
2. Leaves/ Mesh – system to be cleaned up periodically to prevent blocking.
3. Contamination of Rain Water – pollutants from the air (acid rain)
4. Water contamination in storage tank – filtration system required before Domestic use.
5. Low rain water during drought period – smart system that allows water switching to
government feed water during low level of water in storage.

5 Stages of RWH System
System Components
1st Stage – Leaf Blocker - Compulsory
- All steel leaf blocker filter and insect blocker.

- Required to prevent leaves/ branches from entering
the system.
- Holes are large enough to allow for heavy rainfall.
- Second layer screen is small enough to prevent
mosquitoes
- Very low maintenance - sliding system

1st Stage – Filter Pit - Compulsory
- Can be used for HIDDEN DOWNPIPES

-Prevent leaves / mesh from clogging
the downpipes and entering the storage
tank.
-2 layers apertures. Insects prevention.

- Rain water is relatively high in acidity content, with a pH level of 4.0 – 5.5.
- Sample collected from Malaysian rainwater – after first 10 minutes contained
approximately pH of 4.5
- TDS is very low (< 15) from rainwater. Compare to Feed water – TDS of > 50
- The right filtration system is required to ensure safe domestic and non domestic usage.

Case Study – Mingara Leisure Center Australia
Center contains 50 meter swimming pool,
hydrotherapy pool and a leisure pool. Together the
pools require up to 60,000 liters of water to
backwash their filters. Treated water is used for
backwash and then sent to drain.
Area under severe city water restrictions due to
drought. Rain and stormwater retention area close to
center but water unfit for bathing due to turbidity
and microbiological contamination.
Four GE Homespring systems installed in parallel
after a sand filter to draw water from the
retention area, treat it, and make it available for
backwashing pool filters.
Systems installed in 1 day and commissioned in 4
hours.
