Assignment 3 (Subject: Ch.E.

401 Chemical Reactor Design)

(Due Date: 26th October 2018)

Solve the following numerical Problems (CLO-1)

Question # 1
Calculate the steady-states for the following reactor configuration. Is there an unstable steady-
state?
Data:
A + B = 2C in the liquid phase,
V = I L, k = 33 X 109 exp [-20,000/(RT) L/(mol . min),
- r = 20 kcal/mol, CA0 = 20 mol/L, CBo = 3 mol/L, v = 100 cm3/min, To = l7°C, ToC =87°C,
pCp = 650 cal/(L' °C), U = 0.1 cal/(cm2 • min K), and AH = 250 cm2.

Question # 2
(a) Plot X(T) for the reaction A = B, r = kCA, HR = -20 kcal/mole, E = 30 kcal/mole, k = 0.05 at
300 K for t = 1 min.
(b) Plot R(T) for the adiabatic reactor with these parameters for CAo = 2 moles/liter and To in
intervals of 20 K, starting at 300 K.
(c) Plot T versus To for these parameters.

Question # 3
A first order homogenous (liquid phase) reaction is carried out in an ideal stirred tank reactor.
The concentration of reactant in the feed is 3.0 g moles/liter and the volumetric flow rate is 60
cm3/sec. The density and specific heat of the reaction mixture are constant at 1.0 g/cm3 and 1.0
cal/g C respectively. The reactor volume is 18 liters. There is no product in the feed stream and
the reactor operates adiabatically. The heat and rate of the irreversible reaction are.
= - 50000 cal/g mole
R = 4.48 x 106 exp (-15000/R T) C
Where C is concentration and T is in Kelvins.
If the feed stream is at 25oC, what are the steady state conversions and temperatures in the
product stream?
