THE TRUMPET CALL

Our Mission: To love Jesus Christ and to share His Love

Our Vision: To be a Christian community where Christ is transforming lives
East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Volume V Issue 5 February 3, 2019

Pastor’s Corner
As I write this, the temperature outside is in the single digits, having dipped below zero last night. We
know of at least one person who slept in the woods last night, and did so without even a tent. Needless to
say, these are dangerous conditions and several people in the Midwest have perished as a result of the
“Polar Vortex.” We are committed as a church to helping those most in need, and especially those without
shelter. There are things each of us can do!

This Sunday, February 3 is Super Bowl Sunday, and it’s also another “super” Sunday: Super Sock Sunday. Our youngest
children will be collecting socks from the congregation after each worship service which will go to those most in need
through our partnership with Street2Feet Outreach. Warm, clean socks are very much needed this time of year as the
homeless population spends so much time on their feet walking between the Stroudsburgs, trying to stay warm. Please
remember to pick up at least one NEW pair of socks between now and Sunday; better yet, pick up a pair of men’s and
women’s socks. We appreciate the children of our church taking this project on and inviting all of us to become part of it.

Starting Sunday, February 10 for one week, we will be hosting the Cold Weather Shelter here at ESUMC. We do this once
per winter season to allow the Stroudsburg Wesleyan Church to host Family Promise. The shelter has been well utilized
this winter, meaning that we are hosting many homeless persons. A few years ago, we maxed out at 18 and now there are
at least 30 guests each night. This calls for more help to host in the evenings. We will need “Welcome Ambassadors” to
welcome the guests from 7:45-10:00 pm each night. This is a time of light refreshments, games, and informal conversation.
It helps to establish the quiet, friendly atmosphere we are striving for each night. We then need several people to stay
overnight with the guests, from about 9:30 pm to 6:00 am the following morning. Also needed are light snacks for each
night, and for two of the nights, we need dinners provided much as we do when we host Family Promise. Those nights are
February 12 and 14 (how great is it that someone gets to say “We love you!” with dinner on Valentine’s Day to our
overnight guests!).

If you are able to help with this the week of February 10-17, please see or call Ana Price (570-460-8423 or
argenfishing@yahoo.com). There is also an online sign-up on Google Drive, and Ana will be glad to share that link with you
to see where there are needs in the scheduling. Thanks to all of those who have recently volunteered, some for the first
time. Even if this feels a little out of your “comfort zone,” please consider signing up as you will never be alone in this
endeavor. There are always those who have done it before to help guide the way for those who have not. Let’s make sure
everyone has warm and dry socks and a warm and dry place to stay this winter!

Blessings in Christ, Pastor Jim

FamilyLife’s Weekend to Remember is coming to the Pocono’s May 22-24 and 29-31 at Sky Top Lodge.

Weekend to Remember is a two-and-a-half day (Friday night - Sunday) weekend getaway that equips married and engaged couples with
practical tools and resources.
You will receive biblically-based insights from top speakers and marriage experts, helpful tools, special breakout
sessions, workbooks, and relaxing alone time to rediscover the reasons you fell in love, free from distractions.
Weekend to Remember is not just for married couples. They provide engaged couples with the understanding on
how to create a firm foundation to build your future married relationship.
Even if you have attended in the past, it’s way too easy to slip back into the trap of taking each other for granted.
Great marriages require intentionality and investment—just like a garden that must be watered in order to grow.
Don’t just survive, discover a marriage that THRIVES!
For more information contact Ann or Bruce Osbun who are volunteer coordinators for FamilyLife. See you in Fellowship Hall Sunday!

“God gave me a heart for other people. Stephen Minister training gave me the skills I need to minister to
people and bring God’s love into their lives during a time of deep need.” Our Stephen Ministry trainees
have completed two thirds of their training and well on their way to becoming Commissioned Stephen
Ministers. Please continue to lift in prayer: Ann, Bobbie, Bryce, Michelle and Rosalinda as they press
on toward the prize.
