The present paper draws upon the diaphasic variations of the characters in the
following writings of I.L. Caragiale: the short story “Two Lottery Tickets”, the
comedy “A Stormy Night”, the sketches “A Pedagogue of the New School”, “A
Conference.”
The “diaphasic” concept was defined and the speech manner of the characters
was analysed according to their social status, age, sex, emotions of the text producer
and the text receiver/addressee, the type of human relations, the moment of
communication, the adaptation to the communication situation.
The analysis was carried out at semantic, morphological, syntactic, style and
etymological level.
There were highlighted various linguistic and extra linguistic modalities,
gestures, voice tone, facial expression, pride emphasis, nervous overexcitement,
stupidity, ignorance, contempt, curtsey, jealousy, lack of professional skills, irony,
comic etc.
The conclusion is that the speech manner of the characters is a proof of the
lexical richness of the Romanian language for expressing the most subtle and varied
thoughts and emotional tones, of the unequalled linguistic genius of I.L. Caragiale,
providing a vivid image of a certain phase of the evolution of the Romanian literary
language.
