Boom Drift Reduction Valve

SMCS - 5059-010; 5059-017

Remove & Install Boom Drift Reduction Valve

Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that the fluids are contained during performance of the inspection, the
maintenance, the testing, the adjusting and the repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with
suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.
Refer to the "Tools And Shop Products Guide, NENG2500" the tools and the supplies suitable to collect and
contain any of the fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of the fluids according to local regulations and
mandates.

OTE: The boom drift reduction valve is located on the left side of the main control valve.

1. Start the machine, and fully extend the stick and the bucket. Lower the stick and the bucket to the ground.

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under

pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury,
release the pressure in all of the implement hydraulic circuits (the
boom, the stick and the bucket) before any of the hydraulic lines or any
of the components are disconnected or removed.

2. Release the pressure in all of the implement hydraulic circuits (the boom, the stick and the bucket) before
any of the hydraulic lines or any of the components are disconnected or removed. Release the pressure as
follows:

a. Shut off the engine and place key in the "ON" position. Put the hydraulic activation control lever in
the "UNLOCK" position.
b. Move the control levers for the boom, the stick and the swing to all full stroke positions. This will
release any pressure that might be present in the pilot system.

c. Return key to "OFF" position.

d. Slowly loosen the fill plug on the hydraulic tank and release the pressure.

e. Tighten the fill plug on the hydraulic tank. Tighten the fill plug to a torque of 68 ± 7 *m (50 ± 5 lb
ft).

f. The pressure in the hydraulic system has been released and the hydraulic lines and the components
can be removed.

3. Drain the oil from the hydraulic oil tank in a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the
hydraulic oil tank is 130 liters (34 U.S. gal).

4. Remove four bolts (1), the washers and plate (2).

5. Disconnect tube assembly (3) and two hydraulic hoses (4) from the main control valve.

6. Disconnect tube assembly (7).

7. Remove twelve socket head bolts (5) and remove tube assembly (6).
8. Disconnect tube assembly (8) and three hydraulic hoses (10) from boom drift reduction valve (9).

9. Remove six socket head bolts (11) while supporting boom drift reduction valve (9). The weight of the
boom drift reduction valve is 15 kg (33 lb).

10. Remove boom drift reduction valve (9).

OTE: The following steps are for the installation of the boom drift reduction valve.

11. Check the condition of the O-ring seals used in the ends of the hose assemblies and the tube assemblies
that connect to the boom drift reduction valve. If any of the O-ring seals are worn or damaged, use new parts
for replacement.

12. Install boom drift reduction valve (9) in the reverse order of the removal steps.

OTE: Refer to the topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the "Operation & Maintenance
Manual" for the proper filling procedure and the proper levels for the hydraulic system.

13. Fill the hydraulic oil tank with oil to the correct level.

Disassemble & Assemble Boom Drift Reduction Valve

Start By:

a. remove boom drift reduction valve

1. Make sure the boom drift reduction valve is thoroughly clean prior to disassembly. Put identification
marks on all internal parts of the valve for assembly purposes.
2. Remove plug (3), spring (2) and guide (1) from the valve body.

3. Remove O-ring seal (4) from the plug (3).

4. Remove plug (6) and plunger (5) from the valve body.

5. Remove O-ring seal (7) from plug (6).

6. Remove four bolts (7a). Remove cover (8), spring (10) and spool (9) from the valve body.

7. Remove O-ring seal (11) and back-up ring (12) from cover (8).
8. Remove relief valve group (13) from the valve body.

9. Disassemble relief valve group (13) as follows:

a. Remove cap assembly (14) from body assembly (15).

b. Remove O-ring seal (16) from the body assembly.

10. Disassemble body assembly (15).

a. Remove spring (24) from body (17).

b. Remove inner valve body (18) from body (17).

c. Remove valve seat (19) from inner body (18).

d. Remove spring (22) and plunger (23) from the valve seat (19).

e. Remove O-ring seal (20) and two back-up rings (21) from valve seat (19).
11. Disassemble cap assembly (14).

a. Remove O-ring seal (30) from cap (31).

b. Remove two back-up rings (33) and O-ring seal (32) from cap (31).

c. Loosen nut (25).

d. Remove setscrew (27), spring (29) and plunger (28) from cap (31).

e. Remove O-ring seal (26) from setscrew (27).

OTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the boom drift reduction valve.

12. Make sure all parts of the boom drift reduction valve are thoroughly clean prior to assembly. Check the
condition of all parts of the boom drift reduction valve. If any of the parts are worn or damaged, use new
parts for replacement. Apply clean hydraulic oil on all internal parts of the boom drift reduction valve during
assembly.

13. Assemble relief valve group (13) as follows:

a. Assemble cap assembly (14).

b. Install O-ring seal (26) on setscrew (27).

c. Install plunger (28), spring (29) and setscrew (27) in cap (31).

d. Install O-ring seal (32) and two back-up rings (33) on cap (31).

e. Install O-ring seal (30) on cap (31).

14. Assemble body assembly (15).

a. Install two back-up rings (21) and O-ring seal (20) in valve seat (19).

b. Install plunger (23) and spring (22) in valve seat (19).

c. Install valve seat (19) in inner body (18).

d. Install inner valve body (18) in body (17).

e. Install spring (24) in body (17).
