PART 1 GENERAL
SUMMARY
This guide specification covers the design, materials of construction, features, performance and testing of
the following single stage, hydronic pumps.
The type and size of all chilled water, condenser water pumps for air conditioning applications shall be in
accordance with requirement and schedule of specifications.
Pump shall be suitable for the purpose they are intended. The rotating unit can be removed and serviced
without disconnecting the suction and discharge piping.
The pump and motor shall be factory assembled at the pump manufacturer’s facility.
Installation instructions shall be included with pump at the time of shipment.
The pump manufacturer shall have complete unit responsibility.
All Pumps shall be sourced from single vendor.
REFERENCE
The design, material, construction, manufacture, inspection, testing and performance of single stage,
hydronic pumps shall comply with all current applicable statutory regulations and safety codes in the
locality, where the equipment will be installed.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The pump shall be designed and installed with due consideration for inspection, maintenance and repairs
SELECTION CRITERIA
Pump capacities, pressures and operating characteristics shall be as mentioned in the schedule.
Head-capacity curves shall slope up to maximum head at shut-off. Select pumps near the mid-range of
the curve, so that the design capacity falls to the left of the best efficiency point, to allow a cushion for the
usual drift to the right in operation, without approaching the pump curve end.
The selected water pump set shall have an impeller diameter size not more than 90% of the largest
impeller that the selected model of pump set can house.
The minimum pump efficiency shall be>80% for Non 24x7 pumps &> 70% for 24x7 Pumps&Pump sets
should have non-overloading characteristics throughout the operating curve.
Pump selection for open systems shall be such that required net positive suction head (NPSHR) does not
exceed net positive suction head available (NPSHA).
Furnish each pump and motor with a nameplate giving the manufacturers name, serial number of pump,
capacity in GPM (or M3/hr) and head in feet (or M) at design condition, horsepower, voltage, frequency,
speed and full load current and motor efficiency.
SUBMITTALS
QUALITY ASSURANCE
Pumps shall be procured from specialized sinlge manufacturer whose products have been in satisfactory
use in similar service for minimum period of twenty (20) immediately preceding years.
Pumps design shall conform to ISO 5199: 2002 for and ISO 2858: 1975 standards for centrifugal pumps
and to requirements specified herein.
If the pumps are manufactured in India then they may conform to IS 6595 Part II: 1993 and IS 5120:
1977.
Performance test to demonstrate the hydraulic and mechanical acceptability (capacity, total head, power
and speed are measured) shall be done at factory as per relevant ANSI/HI type tests.
All pumps shall comply with level A testing of ANSI/HI 1.6: 2000, Centrifugal Pumps Tests or can comply
with ISO 9906: 1999 (Grade II).
If the pumps are manufactured in India then the performance test shall conform to IS 10981: 1983.
The manufacturer shall give guarantee on the flow rate and total head of the pump and efficiency of the
pump set at specified pump speed.
DELIVERY, STORAGE& HANDLING
Equipment shall be delivered to site, stored and protected in strict compliance with manufacturer's written
instructions and recommendations.
Equipment shall be delivered to site in manufacturer’s original, unopened containers and packaging, with
labels clearly identifying product name and manufacturer.
Equipment inspection shall be done to ensure that no damage has occurred during shipment.
Products shall be stored in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation in an interior
location, which shall be clean, dry with uniform temperature to prevent condensation. Protect from
exposure to dirt, fumes, water, corrosive substances, and physical damage.
Equipment shall be rejected, which are poorly packed and result in sign of corrosion.
Vendor shall ensure all necessary measures to cover and protect the Equipment at site.
MAINTENANCE
All maintenance procedures shall be scheduled and carried out during the Defects Liability Period
according to the requirements.
An exhaustive schedule of the maintenance spares for this period shall be prepared in addition to the
spare materials as required.
A clear program on maintenance of the system shall be scheduled detailing the frequency of
maintenance intervals.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
FEATURES OF CONSTRUCTION
Pump Casing
Pump spiral volute casing shall be robust construction with integrally cast base at bottom in order to
transmit pipe load to the base and foundation (small pumps can be without base).
Liquid passages in the casing shall be smooth finish to ensure high efficiency.
Pump casing shall be capable of withstanding 1.5 times the design pressure.
Pump casing shall be Ductile Iron/ grey cast iron according to ASTM A536 and capable of withstanding to
the maximum pressure developed by the pump.
Flange dimensions Shall be as per IS 6392, Table 23
Pump casing shall be fitted with bronze wear ring.
Dowels shall be provided on pump casing for ease of alignment and assembly.
Pump casing shall have tapped holes for priming and draining.
Impeller
a) The impeller shall be lead free cast bronze enclosed with smooth surface finish for minimum
frictional loss. This ensures high efficiency.
b) Impeller shall be keyed to the shaft and secured by threaded sleeve arrangement/ impeller lock
nut.
c) All impellers are dynamically balanced to ISO 1940-1: Grade G6.3.
d) Impellers shall be inherently hydraulically balanced and thus compensate for axial thrust.
e) The direction of rotation of the impeller is clockwise when viewed from the motor.
Shaft
a) Shaft shall be martensitic (or semi-austenitic) stainless steel/carbon steel according to EN
1.4021 / AISI 420, ground and polished to final dimensions and be adequately sized to
withstand all stresses, hydraulic loads, vibrations and torques coming in during operation.
b) Shaft shall be supported by bearings at both the drive end and non-drive end of the pump.
c) The impeller, coupling and shaft sleeves shall be firmly secured to the shaft by key and/or nuts.
d) Shaft run-out shall be limited at the seal face and at the impeller to 0.05mm
e) Shaft shall be provided with Mechanical seal as default fitment to provide leak free operation.
Shaft Sleeve
a) Pump shafts shall be protected by renewable shaft sleeves, which shall extend well beyond the
pump glands.
b) The sleeves shall be highly polished and shall be securely fastened to the shaft to prevent
loosening.
Wear Rings
a) A renewable type bronze wearing ring shall be provided in the pump casing to maintain close
running clearance and to minimize leakage and recirculation losses to ensure high pump
efficiency.
Mechanical Seals
b) The liquid cavity shall be sealed off at the pump shaft by an internally-flushed mechanical seal
with carbon seal and silicon carbide seal ring.
c) The mechanical shaft seal has dimensions according to EN 12756.
Bearings
a) Heavy duty antifriction ball bearings shall be of standard type and shall meet long and trouble
free operation.
b) Bearing of the pump shall be effectively sealed to prevent loss of lubricant or entry of dust or
water.
Coupling
a) Pumps shall be provided with flexible pin and brush type, and same shall be, capable of
absorbing torsional vibration, shall be employed between pump and motor.
b) Coupling guard shall be bolted to the base plate and shall be furnished for all coupled pumps
and it shall be rigid and free of vibration.
c) The pump coupling should be of close coupled type with stub shaft.
Motors
A. Motors shall be flange mounted, totally enclosed fan-cooled standard squirrel cage induction
motors with main dimensions according to IEC standards.
B. Electrical tolerances are to IEC 60034.
C. Motor shall be energy efficient type (efficiency class of IE-2) complying to IS 12615 : 2011.
D. Motor shall be specially designed for quiet operation and its full load speed shall not exceed 1480
rpm.
E. Motor shall be with IP 55 enclosure. The class of insulation shall be of class F with temperature rise
limited to class B, ambient temperature 50oC.
F. Motor shall be suitable for operation on a 415 (± 10% variation), 50Hz ±5%, 3 phase, or 250V-
1phase AC supply. Motor shall be suitable for both DOL and / or STAR/DELTA starting, optional
soft starter starting and/or VFD starting as applicable.
G. Pump and motor shall be factory aligned and shall be realigned by the contractor as per the factory
recommendations after installation.
H. The motor rating shall be sufficient to ensure non-overloading throughout its capacity range and
shall be sized for the end of the curve.
I. Motor shall be 15% higher than the full load power consumption at peak operating conditions.
J. Upto 5.5 kW, motor shall be started with DOL starter and above 5.5 kW it shall be started with
star/delta starter.
K. Pump motor shall be suitable for variable speed operation as mentioned.
L. Pump and motor shall be factory aligned and shall be realigned after installation by the
manufacturer’s representative as per factory recommendations after installation.
M. The motor nameplate rating for pumps under parallel operation shall not be less than the max
(BKW indicated on the pump data sheet (the power at the end of the curve for the rated impeller) or
shall have the specified margin as per this clause whichever is higher.
N. The pump motors shall also be suitable for Start-up under open discharge valve condition.
Name Plates
Each pump shall be provided with a name plate indicating the following details
A. Pump type designation
B. Pump model
C. Rated flow
D. Rated head
E. Pressure rating/max temperature
F. Rated speed
Working Pressure
A. Maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) for all pressure containing parts shall in no case be
less than the maximum discharge pressure produced by the pump at shut off (including tolerances),
at the maximum suction pressure, for the maximum impeller diameter and the maximum continuous
speed.
B. Pump shall be rated minimum of PN 20.
Sound Level
Sound Pressure level of the pump driver shall be max 78dbA* measured at 1.8,m distance from
pump for the duty points.
(*Note: Based on the motor KW and speed according to ISO 3743)
Vibration
The pumps vibration limits shall conform to hydraulic Institute ANSI/HI 1.1-1.5-1994; section
1.4.6.1.1 or ISO 10816 for recommended acceptable unfiltered field vibration limits (as measured
per HI 1.4.6.5.2) for pumps with rolling contact bearings.
Painting
A. The equipment shall be thoroughly cleaned and greased.
B. All rust sharp edges and scales shall be removed.
C. All external and exposed cast iron parts of pumps have an epoxy based coating made in a cathode
electro deposition (CED) process which is high quality dip painting process and which would
prevent rusting and corrosion RAL9005 coating; coating thickness is 25μm.
D. The pump shaft shall not be painted.
LUBRICATON
Upon installation of the complete system and before testing, the pump shall be lubricated in
strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
PUMP ALIGNMENT
Split casing pumps, prior to testing, shall be aligned with a dial indicator within 0.05 mm.
PERFORMANCE DATA
Pump performance curves flow rate Vs head, BKW, efficiency, NPSHR from zero flow to maximum flow
and torque-speed curve with operating points clearly indicated shall be submitted and verified at the time
of testing and commissioning of the installation.
After installation, the pumps shall be subjected to testing at site also. If the site performance is found not
to meet the requirements regarding vibration and noise as specified, the equipment shall be rectified or
replaced by the VENDOR, at no extra cost.
