1. SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

Version 2 of OTTER runs under Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, NT 3.5 or NT 4.0 on an IBM
compatible PC with a Pentium Processor and at least 16 MB (preferably 32 MB) of memory. A new
installation of OTTER requires approximately 15 MB of free disk space. Additional disk space will be
required to store model data and results (this can be several MB per run for a medium sized model over
1000 time steps, so 50 to 100 MB of free hard disk space is recommended). OTTER also requires the use
of a mouse and a VGA or SVGA screen and video adapter.

The following are included in the complete OTTER package:

?? one CD-ROM containing the OTTER program;
?? one software protection “dongle” to allow OTTER to run; and
?? a set of manuals - Installation Guide (this manual), User Guide and Process Model Descriptions.

Describe layout of CD-ROM and what else is on it.

If you require a set of floppy disks to install OTTER, please contact WRc.

It is assumed that you are familiar with using Windows and computers. If you are not, we recommend
that you read the Windows manuals that came with your computer.

The following steps should be taken to install the OTTER program on your computer.

(1) Start Windows

(2) Put the CD-ROM into the CD drive (this is often the D: drive).

(3) From the Windows Start Menu, select the Run... option. The screen should look similar to this:

(4) The run dialog box will be displayed. Type in the command “D:\SETUP.EXE” (if your CD drive is
the D: drive) and press the [? Enter] key.

(5) The setup program runs the ‘InstallShield’? Window, below, which guides you through the
installation procedure.

(6) You will be asked to enter your name and the name of the company you work for, before you can
proceed, e.g.

You will also be asked for a serial number. This is provided on the insert supplied with the CD-
ROM.

Once you have entered your details, you will be shown the information and given a chance to make
a change if necessary.

(7) By default, OTTER is installed in a directory called ‘\Program Files\WRc\OTTER’. The program
files to run the software are installed in a sub-directory called ‘PROGRAMS’ and the database
comprising your data files in a sub-directory called ‘DATABASE’.

To change the directories in which the software is installed, click the ‘Browse’ button and enter
your chosen path.

(8) You will be given three options for setting up the OTTER software. Unless you are very familiar
with the file structure used in OTTER and the setup of your system, we recommend that you
choose the ‘Typical’ option. The ‘Compact’ option installs the minimum number of files to allow
OTTER to run on your computer. Files such as the help system are not installed.

If you choose a ‘Custom’ setup, you will be asked which files you wish to install and shown the
space required to install them. All files that are essential for running OTTER will be installed
automatically.

(9) The setup program creates a new folder in Windows, in which to place the program icons. The
default name for this folder is ‘WRc OTTER’. This can be changed at the following screen.

(10) The setup routine will now confirm your choices for installation of the software. To install the
software, click ‘Next’. Click ‘Back’ to change these settings.

(11) As the program loads, you will be kept informed of its progress,

(12) The OTTER installation routine makes some changes to the system settings. To implement these
changes so that the OTTER program can be run, Windows must be restarted. The setup routine
can do this automatically after the installation is complete. If you chose not to restart your
computer now, you must restart it before trying to run OTTER.

(13) If you are using a Windows shell other than Program Manager, you may be asked some additional
questions. You can usually answer yes to all these questions.

(14) When you have finished you may get a message about the need for a program called SHARE. See
Section 4 Problems with installing OTTER for what you should do.

(15) On completion of the setup routine, WRc OTTER will be added to the Start Menu, as shown below.

You should now check that your computer is set up for British settings. From the Start Menu,
choose Settings...Control Panel...Regional Settings. English (United Kindom) should be selected.

(16) You are now ready to run OTTER.

3. RUNNING WRc OTTER

Before running OTTER ensure that the security dongle is inserted into the printer port on your PC. You
may have to tighten the screws on the dongle to make sure that the electrical connection between the
dongle and the printer port are reliably completed. Note: You can plug your printer into the back of the
dongle.

If you are using an iomega Zip drive, this should be plugged directly into the printer port of your PC.
The dongle should be plugged into the back of the Zip drive.

OTTER is installed on the Start menu in Windows, under the Programs group. From the available files,
select WRc OTTER to run the software.

You now have a working copy of OTTER. The User Guide and the help system will tell you how to use
the software.

4. PROBLEMS WITH INSTALLING WRc OTTER

?? A message appears saying there is not enough disk space
There is not enough space for OTTER to be installed on the disk. You will have to leave the installation
program and make sure that sufficient disk space is available.

?? A message appears saying that a file is in use

Answer “Ignore”. The file will not be installed, but since it is in use you will already have it on your
system.

?? Dongle is inserted but the program does not run

(1) On some computers the connection between the dongle and the printer port is incomplete unless
the dongle is firmly screwed into place.
(2) The dongle is designed so that a printer can be plugged into the back of the dongle. Some printers
can switch off the printer port unless the printer is on. If you are having problems either disconnect
the printer or switch the printer on while you are running OTTER.
(3) Some PCs (in particular some IBM PS/2 machines) allow you to define the access level allowed to
the printer port. Check your computer setup and adjust the settings of the printer port. Consult
your computer manual for advice.
(4) While the dongle is inserted you may find that some networking programs will not run correctly, if
you are connected to the network via the printer port. There is currently no solution to this
problem other than inserting an expansion card in your computer as a dedicated network interface
card.
(5) If your machine is running Windows NT, you may need to have Administrator access to correctly
install the software for accessing the dongle. This is a normal part of the NT security mechanism.
