Design a lap joint between two plates (250x10 and 200x8) to transmit a factored 4
load of 150 kN. If the same operation is performed using double cover butt joint,
which type of joint you would recommend for this connection?

In case of a double cover bolted butt joint, minimum ___ bolts are required and 1
strength generated in planes.
A welded connection is required to design to transfer a load of 600 kN in order to 5
connect a tie member and a gusset plate of 10 mm thick. The tie member consists
of an ISMC 250 which is connected to a gusset plate. Design the connection
the overlap is limited to 350 mm.
b) if there is no such overlap limitation. Assume Fe410 plate and any other data if
necessary.

Explain the following terms: itch Gauge Distance Edge Distance

Find the efficiency of the butt joint as shown in the Fig. 1. Bolts are 20 mm 8
/?) diameter of grade 4.6, having cover plates are 8 mm thick.

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using steel structures. Distinguish 2+1
between the welded connections over bolted connection.
3.())
A double plate bracket is provided using 12 mm thick plates connected to flanges 7
of a steel column (ISMC 300) and transmit a load of 800 kN at an eccentricity of
200 mm. Design the connection (shown in Fig. 2) using M24 with 4.6 grade bolts.
