ABSTRACT
An image and video is often corrupted by noise in its acquisition and transmission by various
kinds of noises. In order to improve the quality and visual perception of an image and video
noise must be removed and the important features like edge details should be retained as much as
possible. The search on efficient de-noising methods is still a valid challenge. In this paper we
studied and analyzed different image and video denoising methods. During survey of work we
have found that different authors have developed separate methods to solve the purpose. So we
conclude that there is not any unique method in this regard. Hence in this work we come across
to develop a new approach to solve the purpose by filtering and wavelet thresholding methods.
KEYWORDS: Image denoising, video denoising, PSNR, Median filter, Wiener filter, Wavelet
Thresholding.

I. INTRODUCTION
An image is unfortunately corrupted by various factors. The distortions of images by
noise are common during its acquisition, processing, compression, transmission, and
reproduction. These noisy effects decrease the performance of visual and computerized analysis
[1]. It is clear that the removing of the noise from the image facilitate the processing.
The video sequences are often corrupted by noise during acquisition and processing. The
noise degrades the visual quality and also affects the efficiency of further processing like
compression, segmentation etc. Hence, it becomes very important to remove the noise while
preserving the original video contents [2].
Filters play a significant role in the image or video de-noising process. It is a technique
for modifying or enhancing an image and video. There are two basic approaches to image or

video de-noising, spatial filtering methods and wavelet (transform) domain filtering methods.
Spatial filters can be further classified into non-linear and linear filters [3-6].

II. LITERATURE REVIEW

Digital image processing has many significant advantages over analog image processing.
Image and video processing allows a much wider range of algorithms to be applied to the input
data and can avoid Problems such as the build-up of noise.
Pankaj Hedaoo et. al. Suggested: “ A wavelet thresholding approach for image
denoising”. In this paper, an adaptive threshold for wavelet thresholding images was proposed,
which is based on the generalized Gaussian distribution modeling of sub band coefficients. For
the first part, of the paper threshold is driven in a Bayesian technique to use probabilistic model
of the image wavelet coefficients that are dependent on the higher order moments of generalized
Gaussian distribution (GGD) in image processing applications. The proposed method is called
Bayes Shrink, is typically within 5% of the MSE of the best soft-thresholding benchmark with
the image. It outperforms Donoho and Johnston Sure Shrink. The second part of the paper is
attempt to claim on lossy compression can be used for image denoising .Thus achieving the
image compression & image denoising simultaneously [1].
V. K. Nath et.al .proposed “A new approach of Noise Reduction in Video using Wiener
bilateral filter”. In this paper, author’s proposes a video denoising technique which combines
Wiener bilateral filtering and selective recursive temporal filtering. The combination of wavelet
based local Wiener filtering and spatial domain bilateral filtering is referred to as Wiener
bilateral filtering. The motion detection and temporal filtering is performed over the spatially
filtered frames [2].
P.Saravanan et.al presented “An Optimal Noise Removal Approach for Lateral Skull
Images”. In this paper author used the images of medical imaging devices to scan the organs of
human to identify the different diseases. The diseases are diagnosed by medical images which
are produced by various medical devices like Ultra Sound, Magnetic Resonance Image,
Computed Tomography (CT), Ultra sound and x-ray Medical devices. Poison noise is commonly
found in x- ray images. The filters namely, Unsharp, Mean, Median, Gaussian and Weiner are
used for comparative study analysis. The performance of noise removing algorithms is measured

using quantitative performance measures such as MSE, RMSE, and PSNR as well as in term of
visual quality of the images. [3].
Amandeep Kaur et.al presented: “speckle noise reduction by using wavelets”. In this
paper author’s proposes the image de-noising procedure by using wavelet based techniques.
Wavelet based techniques has been explored and used for speckle noise reduction. From the
experimental result of various techniques for speckle noise reduction like lee, kaun, frost, srad,
wiener and median filtering techniques it is seen that speckle noise has been reduced [4].
Faten A. Dawood et.al presented Effect Comparison of Speckle Noise Reduction Filters
on 2D-Echocardigraphic Images. Echocardiography imaging is one of the most common
diagnostic tests that are widely used for assessing the abnormalities of the regional heart
ventricle function. In this paper author’s proposes the new speckle noise reduction technique by
using common filters that based on some form of low-pass spatial smoothing filters such as
Mean, Gaussian, and Median [5].
Vandana Roy et.al reviews the significant of de-noising methods (spatial and transform
domain method) and their salient features and applications. Linear filtering is an efficient
technique to deal with additive noise while non-linear filters are efficient to deal with the
multiplicative noise. In this review author’s concludes that filtering method that includes
cascading methods i.e. one filtering method followed by another filtering method performs
better. There is a conflict between filtering method which should be applied first, for example if
we are discussing between wavelet transform (to eliminate additive noise) and ICA (to indentify
artifact sources), then if there is no noise then source separation method will perform better [6].
Ergen B. et.al presented: “Signal and image denoising using wavelet transform”. The
wavelet denoising techniques offers high quality and flexibility for the noise problem of image.
The performances of denoising methods for several variations including thresholding rules and
the type of wavelet were examined. The comparisons have made for the three threshold
estimation methods, wavelet types and the threshold types. The examinations have showed that
most important factor in wavelet denoising is what the decomposition level is rather than the
wavelet type, threshold type or the estimation of threshold value [7].
Rekha Rani et.al presented the Image Denoising Using Hybrid Filter. This paper
represents obstacles related with image during transmission. The salt & pepper noise, Gaussian
noise, impulse noise, Rayleigh noise are such type of noise that are produced during

transmission. Noise arises due to various factors like bit error rate, speed, dead pixels. The
images become blurred due to camera movements, object movement or displacement of pixels.
This paper deals with removal of combination of Gaussian noise, Rayleigh noise, impulse noise
and blurredness, salt and pepper noise simultaneously from the image. The hybrid filter is such a
tool that makes it successful to remove these noise form images and provide clarity to picture
while preserving its details [8].
Rohtash Dhiman et.al presented an Improved Threshold Estimation Technique for Image
Denoising Using Wavelet Thresholding Techniques. In this Paper, a New Threshold Estimation
technique has been presented along with the standard thresholding and filtering techniques and a
Comparative analysis of different denoising Methods has been carried out very efficiently.
Experimental results show that the proposed threshold Estimation Technique has Superior
features compared to conventional methods [9].
Okuwobi Idowu Paul Yonghua Lu et.al presented Image Denoising Using Wavelet
Thresholding Techniques. In this author’s concluded that Wiener filter in denoising images out-
performed all the existing thresholding used in this paper author’s work on; SureShrink,
VisuShrink, and the BayesShrink. Wiener Filter in the Wavelet domain performs better than
thresholding methods and Wiener Filter in the Fourier Domain. Mores so, Adaptive thresholding
perform better than Universal thresholding [10].
Haijuan Hu et.al presented Removing Mixture of Gaussian and Impulse Noise by Patch-
Based Weighted Means. Authors first establish a law of large numbers and a convergence
theorem in distribution to show the rate of convergence of the non-local means filter for
removing Gaussian noise. Based on the convergence theorems, this paper proposed a patch-
based weighted means filter for removing impulse noise and its mixture with Gaussian noise by
combining the essential idea of the trilateral filter and that of the non-local means filter. Based on
the convergence theorems, a new filter called patch- based weighted means filter (PWMF) is
proposed to remove mixed noise, leading to an extension of NL-means [11].
Nezamoddin N. Kachouie et.al presented Image Denoising Using Earth Mover's Distance
and Local Histograms. In this paper an adaptive range and domain filtering is proposed. In the
proposed method local histograms are computed to tune the range and domain extensions of
bilateral filter. The extensions of range and domain filters are determined based on pixel noise

level. Experimental results show that the proposed method effectively removes the noise while
preserves the details [12].
Wenshuo Gao et.al author’s proposed an Improved Sobel Edge Detection. This paper
proposes a method which combines Sobel edge detection operator and soft-threshold wavelet de-
noising to do edge detection on images which include White Gaussian. The commonly used
methods which combine mean de-noising and Sobel operator or median filtering and Sobel
operator can not remove salt and pepper noise very well. In this paper, authors firstly use soft-
threshold wavelet to remove noise, then use Sobel edge detection operator to do edge detection
on the image. The paper proposes an edge detection method which combines soft-threshold
wavelet de-noising and Sobel operator [13].
Sudipta Roy et.al presented: “An Efficient Denoising Model based on Wavelet and
Bilateral Filters” .In this paper author’s investigates different models developed through
hybridization of wavelet and bilateral filters for denoising of variety of noisy images.
Hybridization between wavelet thresholding and bilateral filter is done in different
configurations. The models are experimented on standard images like Lena, Barbara, Einstein
and satellite as well as astronomical telescopic images and their performances are evaluated in
terms of peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and image quality index (IQI). In model 19, first the
image is denoised with bilateral filter followed by decomposition into four subbands. And
wavelet thresholding is applied on all the subbands as applied wavelet based soft thresholding on
all the subbands [14].
Zeinab et.al presented: “Multi Resolution Bilateral Filter for MR Image Denoising”. In
this paper authors propose an extension of the bilateral filter: multi resolution bilateral filter
(MRBF), wavelet transform (WT) sub-bands mixing. The proposed wavelet sub-bands mixing is
based on a multi resolution approach for improving the quality of image denoising filter, which
turns out to be very effective in eliminating noise in noisy images. Quantitative validation was
carried out on synthetic datasets generated with the Brain Web simulator. Comparison with other
methods, such as nonlinear diffusion, Fourth-Order Partial Differential Equations , Total
variation, Nonlocal mean, Wavelet thresholding, and Bilateral filters , shows that the proposed
multi resolution bilateral filter (MRBF) produces better denoising results [15].

computer vision. This paper proposes a novel algorithm based on wavelet threshold for image
denoising, which is combined with the linear CLS (Constrained Least Squares) filtering and
thresholding methods in the transform domain [16].
Caroline Chaux et.al presented Image Analysis Using a Dual-Tree M-Band Wavelet
Transform and proposed a 2D generalization to the M-band case of the dual-tree decomposition
structure (initially proposed by N. Kingsbury and further investigated by I. Selesnick) based on a
Hilbert pair of wavelets. Authors propose a new optimal signal reconstruction technique, which
minimizes potential estimation errors [17].
Hossein Talebi, Student Member, IEEE, and Peyman Milanfar, Fellow, IEEE: In this
paper, Authors addresses these shortcomings by developing a paradigm for truly global filtering
where each pixel is estimated from all pixels in the image. Author’s objectives in this paper are
two-fold. First, to give a statistical analysis of their proposed global filter, based on a spectral
decomposition of its corresponding operator, and study the effect of truncation of this spectral
decomposition. Second, to derive an approximation to the spectral components using the
Nyström extension. Using these, authors demonstrate that this global filter can be implemented
efficiently by sampling a fairly small percentage of the pixels in the image [18].
Ravi Mohan Rai et.al : “Analysis Techniques For Eliminating Noise In Medical Images
Using Bivariate Shrinkage Method”. In medical imaging like CT-Scan, Magnetic Resonance
Image (MRI), EEG, ECG accurate diagnosis is to be done. In Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI) images are typically corrupted with noise, which hinder the medical diagnosis based on
these images. Noise degrades the quality of images, suppressing structural details, thus create
difficulties to medical diagnosis. There are various techniques for noise removal from images
like Wiener filter, Median filter, Average filter and Wavelet thresholding. Each technique has its
assumptions, merits, and demerits. In this paper, authors used wavelet based bivariate shrinkage
method algorithm as denoising technique and compare its results with existing Wavelet
Denoising [19].
Rajesh Kumar Rai : “Implementation of Image Denoising using Thresholding

signal characteristics, regardless of its frequency content. It involves three steps: a linear forward

wavelet transform, nonlinear thresholding step and a linear inverse wavelet transform. Wavelet
thresholding is a signal estimation technique that exploits the capabilities of wavelet transform
for signal denoising. [20].
Chandrika Saxena et.al : “Noises and Image Denoising Techniques: A Brief Survey”. In
this paper authors review the existing denoising algorithms, such as filtering approach, wavelet
based approach, and multifractal approach, and performs their comparative study. Different noise
models including additive and multiplicative types are used. They include Gaussian noise, salt
and pepper noise, speckle noise and Brownian noise. Selection of the denoising algorithm is
application dependent. The filtering approach has been proved to be the best when the image is
corrupted with salt and pepper noise. The wavelet based approach finds applications in denoising
images corrupted with Gaussian noise [21].
Michael Elad et.al: “Image Denoising Via Sparse and Redundant Representations Over
Learned Dictionaries”. Authors address the image denoising problem, where zero-mean white
and homogeneous Gaussian additive noise is to be removed from a given image. The approach
taken is based on sparse and redundant representations over trained dictionaries. Using the K-
SVD algorithm, we obtain a dictionary that describes the image content effectively. Two training
options are considered: using the corrupted image itself, or training on a corpus of high-quality
image database. Since the K-SVD is limited in handling small image patches, we extend its
deployment to arbitrary image sizes by defining a global image prior that forces sparsity over
patches in every location in the image [22].
Florian Luisier et.al : “Image Denoising in Mixed Poisson–Gaussian Noise” .Authors
propose a general methodology (PURE-LET) to design and optimize a wide class of transform-
domain thresholding algorithms for denoising images corrupted by mixed Poisson–Gaussian
noise. Authors express the denoising process as a linear expansion of thresholds (LET) that
optimize by relying on a purely data-adaptive unbiased estimate of the mean-squared error
(MSE), derived in a non-Bayesian framework (PURE: Poisson–Gaussian unbiased risk estimate).
Authors then proposed a pointwise estimator for undecimated filterbank transforms, which
consists of subband-adaptive thresholding functions with signal-dependent thresholds that are
globally optimized in the image domain [23].

are useful tool for signal processing such as image compression and denoising. Multi wavelets
can be considered as an extension of scalar wavelets. The main aim is to modify the wavelet
coefficients in the new basis, the noise can be removed from the data. In this paper, authors

are ultrasound medical images. Even if there are multiple modalities of medical image
acquisition, ultrasonogram is mostly used because it is non-invasive, practically harmless to
human body, portable, accurate, has low acquisition cost and has the capability of forming real
time imaging. However, the presence of noise components is more on ultrasound image
compared to other costlier methods like CT and MRI. In this paper a detailed survey on different
techniques for ultrasound image denoising is done. Also the techniques are compared based on
certain parameters and it is analysed that multiscale methods have better performance in
despeckling [25].
Xiangfei Kong et.al presented “A New Image Quality Metric for Image Auto-
Denoising”. This paper proposes a new non-reference image quality metric that can be adopted
by the state-of-the-art image video denoising algorithms for auto-denoising. The proposed metric
is extremely simple. The basic assumption employed by the proposed metric is that the noise
should be independent of the original image. The proposed metric thus aims at maximizing the
structure similarity between the input noisy image and the estimated image noise around
homogeneous regions and the structure similarity between the input noisy image and the
denoised image around highly-structured regions, and is computed as the linear correlation
coefficient of the two corresponding similarity maps [26].

main focus of this proposed work is taking an account for handling uncertainty in assignment of

Matching Algorithm to overcome the computational complexity [27].
Chang C.C. et.al emphasize on a new image-de-noising filter that is based on the standard
median (SM) filter in which a threshold and the standard median is used to detect noise and
change the original pixel value to a newer that is closer to or the same as the standard median.
Authors also incorporated the center weighted median (CWM) filter [28].
Aboshosha A et.al focused on comparative study of image de-noising techniques relying
on spatial filters. Subjective and objective evaluation methods are used for judging the efficiency
of different types of spatial filters applied to different types of noise. Moreover, authors proposed
de-noising technique that is based on cascaded median and wavelets filter [29].
Gui-quan et.al identified how Image is usually corrupted by two or more different type of
noise simultaneously so authors proposed a new mixture filter method in which they classified
the pixels into two classes, one is the pixels which are corrupted by impulse noise and the other
is the pixels corrupted by Gaussian noise. Then median filter is used for the pixels corrupted by
impulse noise and wavelet threshold method filter is used for the pixels corrupted by Gaussian
noise [30].
Ratna Babu K. et. al. proposed a De-noising algorithm to perform image de-noising
which eliminates salt and pepper noise. Authors used a method that is better in suppressing salt
and pepper noise at different noise levels and preserve fine details in the image while removing
the noise [31].
Authors proposed a methodology of image de-noising which is based on median filter
and wavelet theory, for removing additive salt and pepper noise or white Gaussian noise . In the
first phase, Canny edge detection is used in edge detection of the noise image to get the basic
outline; In the second phase, an ameliorative adaptive median filter (adaptive variational
threshold value) is used to remove salt noise; In the third phase, Coiflet wavelet system used to
remove pepper noise; at last, processing images linking to get final images [32].
Authors has been tried to remove the various noise (Gaussian, speckle, salt n pepper
noise) by using the filters as individual median filter and only the wavelet filter and then they
have applied the cascaded form of median and wavelet transform filter to remove the noise up to
great extent [33].

Jingyu Yang et.al: “Image and Video Denoising Using Adaptive Dual-tree Discrete
Wavelet Packets”. Authors investigate image and video denoising using adaptive dual-tree
discrete wavelet packets (ADDWP), which is extended from the dual-tree discrete wavelet
transform (DDWT). With ADDWP, DDWT subbands are further decomposed into wavelet
packets with anisotropic decomposition, so that the resulting wavelets have elongated support
regions and more orientations than DDWT wavelets. To determine the decomposition structure,
authors developed a greedy basis selection algorithm for ADDWP, which has significantly lower
computational complexity than a previously developed optimal basis selection algorithm with
only slight performance loss. For denoising the ADDWP coefficients, a statistical model is used
to exploit the dependency between the real part and imaginary part of the coefficients. The
proposed denoising scheme gives better performance than several state-of-the-art DDWT-based
schemes for images with rich directional features [34].
S. Sutha et. al: “A Comprehensive Study on Wavelet Based Shrinkage Methods for
Denoising Natural Images”. Image denoising is a thirst area in image processing for decades.
Wavelet transform has been an efficient tool for image representation for decades because of its
simplicity, energy compaction and sparse representation. A wavelet based thresholding
techniques are proposed based on universal and adaptive thresholding techniques. Fixing an
optimal threshold is a key factor to determine the performance of denoising algorithms. This
optimal threshold shall be estimated from the image statistics for ensuring better performance of
noise removal in terms of clarity (or quality of the) image [35].
Seema Mishra et. al : “Spatio-Temporal Video Denoising by Block-Based Motion
detection”. In this paper, spatial filtering of individual frames is done in the wavelet domain, and
the filtering between the frames is done by recursive temporal filter. Spatial filtering is done by
taking wavelet transform of individual frames and then modifying the wavelet coefficients by
spatially adaptive bayesian wavelet shrinkage method. The denoising artifacts and residual noise
differ from frame to frame which produces unpleasant visual effect. Hence filtering in time
domain is essential. Temporal filtering is based on a simple block based motion detector and on
selective recursive time averaging of frames [36].

on analyzing the subband coefficients. Experimental results, on different test images under
different noise intensity conditions, shows proposed algorithm, called OLI-Shrink, yields better
peak signal noise ratio with superior visual image quality measured by universal image quality

Vladimir Zlokolica et al: “Wavelet-Domain Video Denoising Based on Reliability
Measures”. This paper proposes a novel video denoising method based on nondecimated wavelet
band filtering. In the proposed method, motion estimation and adaptive recursive temporal
filtering are performed in a closed loop, followed by an intra-frame spatially adaptive filter. All
processing occurs in the wavelet domain .The paper introduces new wavelet-based motion
reliability measures. Authors make a difference between motion reliability per orientation and
reliability per wavelet band. These two reliability Measures are employed in different stages of
the proposed denoising scheme. The reliability per orientation (horizontal and vertical) measure
is used in the proposed motion estimation scheme while the reliability of the estimated motion
vectors (MVs) per wavelet band. Authors propose a novel cost function for motion estimation
which takes into account the spatial orientation of image structures and their motion matching
values [38].
Vandana Roy et al: “Performance Evaluation of Different Image Denoising Methods”. In
this paper authors developed an algorithm for three different denoising methods: Median filter,
wavelet domain based denoising and approximation part obtained by wavelet domain method is
again filtered by median filter to get better denoised result. Image is considered as noised by
Gaussian, speckle and salt & pepper noises. The results shows that if the image are affected by
Gaussian and speckle noise then the method in which approximation part is filtered by median
filter will perform better than individual median and wavelet domain method [39].

video quality without movement ghosting. Besides, the speed of video denoising can be
accelerated by bilateral filtering [40].
S. Chen et al: “Edge preserving image denoising with a closed form solution”. In this
paper authors propose a novel pixel-based algorithm, which formulates the image denoising
problem as the maximum a posterior (MAP) estimation problem using Markov random fields
(MRFs). Such an MAP estimation problem is equivalent to a maximum likelihood (ML)
estimation constrained on spatial homogeneity and is NP-hard in discrete domain. To make it
tractable, we convert it to a continuous label assignment problem based on a Gaussian MRF
model and then obtain a closed form globally optimal solution. Since the Gaussian MRFs tend to
over-smooth images and blur edges, our algorithm incorporates the pre-estimated image edge
information into the energy function construction and therefore better preserves the image
structures [41].

III. PROBLEM FORMULATION

After studying different approaches we observe that some of the approach provides good
denoising for image and video, but still there is need of an approach which may provide better
agreement of result.

IV. PROPOSED WORK

After analyzing several techniques we proposed an approach to denoise image and video.
Combined Filtering and wavelet thresholding approach is proposed to apply on noisy image and
video and expecting for betterment of result.

V. CONCLUSION
In this paper we present a survey on image and video denoising. Concentrating on
different denoising techniques and emphasize on the problems, we also suggest an efficient
solution to solve the above problem.
A large number of linear and non linear filtering algorithms have been developed to
reduce noise from corrupted images and video to enhance visual quality. The most common type
of noise is the salt & pepper noise, Gaussian noise & Poisson noise. Linear filtering is an

efficient technique to deal with additive noise while non-linear filters are efficient to deal with
the multiplicative and function based noise. If we are moving to the wavelet transform domain
method then non adaptive basis function based wavelet transform domain method provides better
de-noising while preserving the details of image like edges. PSNR and MSE are the performance
parameters.
