6.LITERATURE REVIEW

6.1 Meaning of Communication.

According to Legan, he defines communication as a process by which two or more peoples

exchange ideas and impression in a way that each participating party gain a common
understanding of the message being communicated. It is through this communication that we are
able to solve conflicts and misunderstanding which arise in our societies as sighted out by a
person Rodgers. Communication is thus involving many processes that is followed for it to
effective and both participating parties are satisfied by the message being pass; the generator of
the message is referred to as the sender and the one who is being communicated to is referred to
as the receiver. The message that is being communicated, it has passed through se4veral process
as follows:

i). The sender generates the idea in the mind.

ii). The idea is then converted into words and pictures and thus it encoded in the mind.

iii). The encoded idea is transmitted to the receiver.

iv). The receiver receives the message by senses and encode the message.

v). The receiver then converts the message into her words.

6.2 Types of communication.

Communication is categorized into various types basics on different features; his features are
worth to be considered basically because we are addressing different groups of people at
different time and venues. Key factor to consider when categorizing information are,

i)channel; for this case communication is either a formal or informal one.

ii) Method of expression, for this case communication can be pass by

a). orally

b). In written or

c). Gestural

Classification of communication according to formality/network.

i)Formal communication. This refer to official communication which is taking place in chain of
command in an organization like a learning institution, example language that is being use when
one is in an interview seeking for employment or a communication between a senior officer and
his juniors when in a meeting clarifying issues and giving new changes that have arisen within
the organization.

ii). Informal communication: This communication between individual and groups which are not
officially recognized, for example when a friends are communicating to each other while
working or discussing something when they are alone or a case where a group of individual are
discussing their prowess in the group and matters affecting them

Classification according to method of expression

a) Oral communication: This where the communicating parties verbally pass

information from one person to another. Both parties involve are in a position to
convince one another on matter in which they do not agree upon, since they are in
touch during the process of communication.
b) Written communication: In this form of communication, communicating parties
express their idea by putting it down on paper and pass to the intended person who
after reading and understand the message, he writes back to reply to the message that
c) he received. This where the receiver express and give his view to the sender of the
message.
d) Gestural form:
This form of communication, the communicating parties use expression to pass the
message to each other. This expression may be facial or by use of other parts of their
body like hands and eyes.
a) Direction of the message: communication goes on in this method by considering the
hierarchy of the people involve, where this people include: boss, deputy manager, employees,
and all other personnel found in that jurisdiction where communication is carried out. For
this situation, sub-division can further be done basing on the communicating parties as
follows
i)Downward communication:
This where Boss s giving directive to his servants or communicating changes to them or
promotions that have been done. He can also be informing them of any changes that have
occurred in the organization that they were not aware about them or any relevant information

in this case, it is junior communicating to the boss; this situation occurs when they are giving
him complains or suggestion which if implemented, it increase the rate at which the
organization grow.

7.SKILLS OF COMMUNICATION

7.1. Listening skills.

Listening is deliberate act of receiving sound, constructing meaning and responding to the
spoken message from the sender. The receiver then gives much attention to the message and act
on it responsibly as by the demand of the message. Taking much attention to the message and
applying an effort of dealing with its demand, a person by the name Bruger after doing research
on it concluded is the best form of listening.

Moreover, it is not necessarily what we express out or what we say are only form of
communication no there are so many ways in which the power from in part command people to
do. Going to an interview having dress shaggily and even with slippers and long hairs
communicate more about us in which the interviewer listens to our attention and basically judge
us from our outlook and fail to consider that person for the job irrespective of his fluent language
and having good performance in this certificate. Interviewer conclude the person is unworthy just
because of his ay of presenting himself; basically this conclusion drawn from interpretation and
evaluation of the person’s outlook. After sensing and selecting the verbally communicated
message let say by the interviewer he just encodes and either respond to your point of view of
just remain calm and keep it in his memory for future reference or for short term reference. In
most case, interviewers emphatically listen to the interviewee who is going on with his
imaginative listening to argue out his points well for the purpose of being considered the best.

7.2 Reading skills

Reading is basically interpretation of written or printed words and non -words for the purpose of
obtaining knowledge, information, follow instruction or direction, pass exam or for
entertainment from them. Some mainly those who have not study communication skills skill if at
a time reads, they just do so for fun or aiming to obtain in formation but at last they would not
have gain from it since they luck strategies of good reading method or partly get a little clue of
what they were aiming, making them to be behind those who have study communication skills.
Moreover, ones lose a lot while trying to read as it is not what have come sincerely from them
and end up not making any notes during reading exercise as they don’t have knowledge about its
significance and being affected by barriers of reading because they luck idea on how to
overcome them.

Presentation skills

Failings to recognizing protocols during address in a meeting or either during a public address is
one of the failures that a university student who has not learn communication skills will
experience as argue by Hampshire Palgrave in his view abut speech. Furthermore, he explains
that that considering the hierarchy of audience make feel recognize and appreciated. Thus this
usually degrade the speech of this kind of students. Embarrassment is normally experience by
those who fail to recognize, especially male audience are victims of this according to argument
of Lucas when he was explain factors to consider during speech giving in his book entitle The
art of public speaking (6th Ed.) New York:
One normally who lucks the above skills of communication become a liability and brings
embarrassment in occasion whenever he is given opportunity to take charge of progress of the
ceremony. Being lively and involving your audience is one of the key factor to consider during
public speaking but normally these kind of people fail to consider the same making the audience
to feel unconsidered and get bored during the session.

Library skills
This kind of skills that enable the student to locate the source of the information they are relying
on or as according to their research. This also eliminate students who have not learned

communication skills and they will never be independent in their lives. It equips one on to trace
resources in library.

CONCLUSION

This aims at making the students who are in university, colleges and more so lecturers to be
independent in their work and to recognize the ideas of other people in their research and when
presenting the information in which they are defending in different fields. Unity and oneness is
also created among people who are doing research in the field are researching on the problems in
which they are to come up with the solution to it.

different contemporary problems which are affecting the society. Moreover, courage is built in
oneself by learning it in a way I which presentation in front of so many audience is done during
