Conquistar el Mal con el Bien
En 1951, dos equipos de fútbol universitario (A y B) se vieron envueltos en un partido
particularmente duro y enérgico, con numerosas sanciones por ambos lados y varias
lesiones. En los días posteriores al juego, cada uno de los periódicos universitarios
tomó partido y el conflicto se elevó a dimensiones insospechadas.
Fascinados por ello, dos profesores, de las universidades A y B respectivamente,
decidieron entrevistar a más de 150 estudiantes en cada campus para evaluar su
reacción a lo que realmente sucedió.
Se les dijo a los participantes que debían ser lo más objetivos posible y se les dio un
conjunto específico de infracciones que deberían buscar al ver una grabación del
juego. Sin embargo, incluso con esos parámetros, sabiendo que formaban parte de un
estudio psicológico y que se les pedía que fueran lo más objetivos posible, las personas
no podían dejar de lado sus adhesiones. Los miembros de A, incluida una mayoría que
nunca había visto ni un segundo del juego, dijeron que B cometió más faltas que A.
Y los estudiantes de B, incluidos 100 que no habían visto el juego antes, dijeron que A cometió el doble de infracciones que su
escuela.
No es suficiente decir que diferentes personas tienen diferentes actitudes con respecto a lo mismo. De todo lo que ocurre alrededor,
cada persona selecciona sólo los datos que tienen algún significado para ella. Cuando tenemos fuertes sentimientos sobre algún
asunto, nos es imposible ver lo que ocurre de manera objetiva y desapasionada. De hecho, muchos estudios y sucesos diarios
demuestran nuestra incapacidad para ver los eventos de manera imparcial; más bien los vemos de manera interesada.
Esto explica la cólera de los conciudadanos de Cristo. Estaban ciegos para ver el significado de sus milagros en tierras
extranjeras. Tampoco podían creer que una viuda de Sidón y un comandante leproso del ejército sirio fueran más dignos de la
gracia de Dios que ellos, como judíos y nazarenos. Como dice san Pablo hoy: Porque sabemos parcialmente y profetizamos
parcialmente, pero cuando llega lo perfecto, lo parcial pasará.
El odio es universal y omnipresente. Algunas veces somos odiados por personas que nos son muy familiares, como un miembro de
nuestra familia, un amigo o un compañero de trabajo (La confianza engendra desdén). En otras ocasiones, el odio surge entre
personas que parecen muy diferentes (Las diferencias causan odio). Pero tú y yo tenemos que estar alerta, porque también podemos
encontrarnos manifestando alguna forma de odio activo o pasivo, como negarnos a amar a los demás al ignorarlos o mostrar falta de
compasión y un comportamiento indiferente hacia ellos. Pero la raíz del odio es el no reconocer nuestra verdadera
identidad y la verdadera identidad de nuestro prójimo: Hijos de Dios.
Incluso Naamán, en la Primera Lectura, inicialmente sintió ira cuando Elías le pidió que se bañara en el río Jordán siete veces para
curarse, pensando que era algo absurdo y humillante.
Como señaló el Papa Francisco: ¡No queremos escuchar que el leproso o la viuda sean mejores que yo! ¡Son parias! (…) Esto es
humildad, el camino de la humildad; sentirnos tan marginados que necesitamos la Salvación del Señor. Solo Él nos salva, no
nuestra observancia de la ley (24 de marzo, 2014).
Los relatos las Lecturas de hoy nos permiten comprender la necesidad permanente de un Recogimiento y una Quietud
Místicas. Estas no son “recompensas” o “caprichos” del Espíritu Santo. Sin ellas, no tenemos una verdadera perspectiva espiritual ni
suficiente energía para vivir nuestra vocación. Esta semana celebramos la conversión de San Pablo, que se describe en Hechos 9 como
un encuentro personal con Cristo en forma de un destello de luz. De manera semejante, la Quietud Mística no es descanso ni
equilibrio, es, más bien, una sacudida, un impulso, algo que acelera nuestro espíritu en una dirección, muy parecido a una bicicleta,
que se cae sólo cuando deja de girar. La vida de san Pablo se transformó totalmente a partir de ese momento: Hermano Saulo, el
Señor Jesús, que se te apareció en el camino, me ha enviado para que recobres la vista y seas lleno del Espíritu Santo. Al instante
cayó de los ojos de Saulo algo como escamas, y recobró la vista. Se levantó y fue bautizado.
El Recogimiento y la Quietud Místicas son procedimientos de primeros auxilios del Espíritu Santo. Si no acogemos con
entusiasmo las sugerencias y los pequeños impulsos del Espíritu Santo, estaremos lejos de vivir en unión con Dios ... y estas
sugerencias y pequeños impulsos pueden ser los milagros que Dios está realizando "en otros pueblos". en un hermano difícil, en el
alma de una persona indiferente, tal vez en el corazón de un enemigo como Saulo.
Este mensaje de seguridad y confirmación permanente se anuncia en la primera lectura: No te dejes intimidar por ellos, no sea que te
intimide yo delante de ellos. Mira que hoy hago de ti una plaza fuerte, una columna de hierro, una muralla de bronce, frente a todo
el país: frente a los reyes de Judá, sus jefes, sus sacerdotes y el pueblo del país. Ellos combatirán contra ti, pero no te derrotarán,
porque yo estoy contigo para librarte, oráculo del Señor.
A veces, consumimos nuestra atención y nuestras energías haciendo pequeñas críticas sobre el comportamiento de nuestros
hermanos y hermanas. Siempre podemos encontrar algo o alguien a quien criticar o corregir.
Quizás corregir e instruir a otros es una parte importante de nuestra misión, pero esto siempre requiere una sensibilidad y una
conciencia del tiempo espiritual y emocional de nuestro prójimo:
Un padre y su hijo llevaban un burro al mercado. El hombre se sentó sobre el burro, y el niño caminaba.
 La gente a lo largo del camino dijo: Qué cosa tan terrible, un tipo fuerte y grande sentado en el burro, mientras el
joven tiene que caminar. Entonces el padre desmontó, y el hijo tomó su lugar. Pronto la gente comentó: Qué terrible,
ese hombre caminando y el niño pequeño sentado. En ese momento, ambos se montaron en el burro, con lo que
escucharon a otros decir: Qué crueles, dos personas montadas en un burro. Se bajaron. Pero otros comentaron: Qué
estúpidos, el burro no lleva nada a sus lomos y las dos personas van caminando. Finalmente, ambos cargaron el
burro. Nunca llegaron al mercado.
San Pablo nos dice hoy: El amor no se alegra de la injusticia, sino que se regocija con la verdad. El amor todo lo disculpa, todo lo
cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta. Si corregimos a los demás, debe hacerse únicamente por su bien y no por el nuestro. Sólo
hablamos porque nos preocupa sinceramente su misión y el Reino de los Cielos y no queremos que se desvíen.
Siempre tenemos la oportunidad de revertir nuestra tendencia a rechazar a los hermanos difíciles, en nuestra oración siempre
podemos encontrar nuevas formas de aceptación y hospitalidad. Una historia bien conocida dice que algunos soldados de
la Segunda Guerra Mundial llevaron el cuerpo de su compañero caído a una pequeña iglesia parroquial después de una feroz batalla.
Le preguntaron al párroco si podían dar a su amigo un entierro cristiano en el cementerio de la iglesia. El párroco preguntó si el
fallecido era católico. Debido a que sus amigos no pudieron responder, el párroco rechazó la petición con pesar. Entonces enterraron
el cuerpo justo afuera de la cerca del cementerio. A la mañana siguiente, cuando fueron a despedirse de su amigo, no pudieron
localizar su tumba. Desconcertados, volvieron a llamar a la puerta de la iglesia para preguntar al sacerdote al respecto. Él respondió:
La primera parte de la noche me quedé despierto, dolido por lo que había dicho. La segunda parte de la noche la pasé desplazando
la cerca.
La compasión cristiana no se limita a dar cosas o resolver todos los problemas de nuestros semejantes, movidos por compasión o
piedad. Va más lejos. Se trata de ayudar a las personas a soñar y hacer realidad su aspiración más profunda. La compasión
cristiana se propone ayudar a los más débiles a levantarse, para darles la oportunidad de servir a los demás y
descubrir así su misión personal. La compasión es ayudar a otros a descubrir su yo más auténtico. Esto es dar vida a nuestros
semejantes, porque no podemos olvidar que las Obras Espirituales de Misericordia (Enseñar al que no sabe, Corregir al que se
equivoca, Dar buen consejo al que lo necesita, Perdonar las injurias, Consolar al triste, Sufrir con paciencia los defectos del prójimo y
Rogar a Dios por los vivos y difuntos.) ayudan a dar auténtica vida en el presente, y en el futuro, en el cielo.
Porque todo el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; y todo el que pierda su vida por causa de mí, la hallará.
Cristo envió doce discípulos y luego otros setenta y dos. Estos setenta y dos nos representan a todos, porque la cosecha es abundante y
hay trabajo para todos nosotros:
Dos amigas compartían el almuerzo y una le dijo a la otra: No conozco a muchos cristianos, pero de alguna manera no
puedo evitar el considerarlos hipócritas. La otra respondió: Pero tu cuñada, ella vive contigo en la misma casa;
seguramente reconocerás que ella es una devota cristiana.
Exactamente eso, respondió con los ojos en blanco. Tiene una disposición encantadora, y dedica su vida a las misiones y
la catequesis, pero nunca me ha dicho una sola palabra acerca de convertirme a su fe. Sé que ella me quiere, pero si ella
creyera todo eso, ¿No crees que habría dicho algo?
El mensaje de Jesús es inclusivo incluso para los que están espiritual o físicamente muertos. Por eso San Pablo escribe: Porque
ninguno de nosotros vive para sí mismo, ni tampoco muere para sí. Si vivimos, para el Señor vivimos; y, si morimos, para el Señor
morimos. Así pues, sea que vivamos o que muramos, del Señor somos. Para esto mismo murió Cristo y volvió a vivir, para ser
Señor tanto de los que han muerto como de los que aún viven (Rom 14: 7-9).
San Pablo nos ofrece una de las mejores descripciones del amor. En nuestro mundo moderno, cuando las personas hablan sobre el
amor, se refieren a la posesión, la concupiscencia y el control. San Pablo era muy consciente de las motivaciones mixtas en todo lo que
hacemos, pero creía en el poder del amor y su centralidad para el cristiano.
Si el amor no puede ser escondido, tampoco se puede ocultar la falta de amor. Aquellos a quienes servimos, tanto creyentes como
incrédulos, notarán que falta algo, no hay nada auténtico ni real. No soy nada, dice Pablo. No sucederá nada espiritual, por muy bien
que se vea en la apariencia superficial. No podemos llegar al cielo sin el amor, porque al amor es el mismo cielo. De este modo, el cielo
puede ser experimentado aquí, aunque sea como en un espejo oscuro; de modo enigmático, pero no obstante verdadero. Todo acto de
amor tiene un precio (una historia moderna del buen samaritano):
George Herbert era un conocido poeta, sacerdote y músico inglés. Iba de camino a una sesión de música una tarde,
cuando se encontró con un hombre cuyo caballo se había derrumbado bajo la carga. El hombre y el caballo estaban en
apuros y necesitaban ayuda con urgencia. Herbert no era un hombre sano ni fuerte, pero se quitó la túnica clerical y lo
ayudó a levantar el caballo. Compró algo de alimento para el caballo y pronto el hombre y su caballo pudieron reanudar
su viaje.
Normalmente Herbert iba bien arreglado; sus amigos se sorprendieron cuando apareció con las manos sucias y la ropa
manchada. Expresaron sorpresa y disgusto por que se hubiera involucrado en una tarea tan complicada. Él respondió: El
recuerdo de lo que he hecho será música para mis oídos en la medianoche. Su omisión hubiera causado discordia en mi
conciencia. Porque si estoy obligado a orar por todos los que están angustiados, estoy seguro de que estoy obligado a
hacer todo lo que esté a mi alcance para practicar aquello por lo que oro. Ahora, afinemos los instrumentos.
Queremos tener buena fama, ser queridos y apreciados. Como consecuencia, podemos desanimarnos como Jeremías, cuando, igual
que le pasó a Cristo, chocamos con la falta de comprensión e incluso con la persecución. El discípulo no es mayor que el maestro. Pero
confiamos en la promesa que nunca falla.
El criterio fundamental de un verdadero profeta y apóstol es que está motivado sólo por una razón, el amor.
¿Cómo nos comportamos ante el rechazo de otros, especialmente de quienes consideramos amigos? No te dejes vencer por el mal; al
contrario, vence el mal con el bien (Rom 12:21). Solo cuando nuestros corazones son puros, podemos ir más allá de las circunstancias
normales de nuestras vidas y ver en todo a Dios.

Conquer Evil With Good

In 1951, two university football teams (A and B) were involved in a particularly rough
and physical game with numerous penalties called on both sides and several injuries
occurring. In the days following the game, each school newspaper took the other side
and the conflict escalated to unsuspected dimensions.
Fascinated, two professors, faculty members at A and B respectively, decided to
interview more than 150 students at each campus to gauge their reaction to what truly
happened.
Participants were told that they needed to be as objective as possible and were given a
specific set of infractions that they should look for in reviewing a short collection of
tape from the game. Yet even with those parameters, knowing that they were part of a
psychological study and were asked to be as objective as possible, people could not let
their allegiances go. Members of A, including a majority who had never even seen a
single second of the game, noted that B had committed more infractions than A did.
And B students, also including a hundred who had never seen the game before, said
that A committed twice as many infractions as their school.
It is not enough to say that different people have different attitudes concerning the same thing. Out of all the occurrences going on in
the environment, a person selects only the data that have some significance for them. When we have strong feelings on issues, it is
impossible for us to view events objectively and dispassionately. Indeed, many studies and daily events have demonstrated our
inability to view events impartially; instead, we view them in a self-serving fashion.
This explains the rage of Jesus’ fellow citizens. They were blind to see the meaning of His miracles in foreign lands.
Neither they could believe that a Sidonian widow and a leprous Syrian army commander were more worthy of God's grace than they
were as Jews and Nazarenes. As Saint Paul says today: For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect
comes, the partial will pass away.
Hatred is universal and pervasive. Sometimes we are hated by people who are very familiar to us, like a member of our family, a
friend, or a co-worker (Familiarity breeds contempt). At other times, hatred arises between people who look quite different
(Differences cause hatred). But you and I have to be alert because we may also find ourselves disclosing some form of active or
passive hatred, like refusal to love others by ignoring them or displaying lack of compassion and an indifferent behavior towards
them. But the root of hatred is our failure to realize our true identity and the identity of our neighbor: Children of
God.
Even Naaman, in the First Reading, initially felt anger when he was asked by Elijah to bathe in the Jordan river seven times in order
to be healed, thinking it to be absurd and humiliating.
As Pope Francis remarked: We do not want to hear that the leper or the widow is better than me! They are outcasts! (…) This is
humility, the path of humility, to feel so marginalized that we need the Salvation of the Lord. He alone saves us, not our observance
of the law (March 24, 2014).
The events in today’s Readings enable us to understand the permanent need for a Mystical Recollection and Quietude.
These are not “rewards” or “whims” of the Holy Spirit. Without them, we do not have a neither a true spiritual perspective nor enough
energy to live up our vocation. This week we celebrated the Conversion of St. Paul, which is described in Acts 9 as a personal
encounter with Christ in the form of a flash of light. Similarly, Mystical quietude is not rest or balance, it is, rather, a shake, a boost,
something that accelerates our spirit in one direction, very much like a bicycle, which topples only when stops rotating. The life of
Saint Paul was totally transformed from that moment: Saul, my brother, the Lord has sent me, Jesus who appeared to you on the
way by which you came, that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ Immediately things like scales fell from
his eyes and he regained his sight. He got up and was baptized.
Mystical Recollection and Quietude are first aid procedures of the Holy Spirit. If we do not welcome with active enthusiasm the
suggestions and the littles pushes of the Holy Spirit, we will be far from a state of union with God…and these suggestions and pusses
may well be the miracles God is performing “in other towns”, in a difficult brother, in the soul of an indifferent person, perhaps in the
heart of an enemy like Saul.
This message of assurance and permanent confirmation is announced in the First Reading: I am the one who today makes you a
fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of bronze, against the whole land: against Judah’s kings and princes, its priests and the people
of the land. They will fight against you, but not prevail over you, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.
Sometimes we soak up our attention and energies by coming up with little critiques about the behavior of our brothers and sisters. We
can always find something or someone to criticize or to correct. Perhaps correcting and instructing others is an important part of our
mission, but this always requires a sensitivity and an awareness of the spiritual and emotional time of our neighbor:
A father and his son took a donkey to the market. The man sat on the beast, and the boy walked. People along the way said: What a
terrible thing, a big strong fellow sitting on the donkey’s back, while the youngster has to walk. So the father dismounted, and the
son took his place. Soon onlookers remarked: How terrible, this man walking, and the little boy sitting. At that, they both got on the
donkey’s back only to hear others say: How cruel, two people sitting on one donkey. Off they came. But other bystanders commented:
How crazy, the donkey has nothing on his back and two people are walking. Finally, they were both carrying the donkey. They
never did make it to market.
 St Paul tells us today: Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in the truth; it is always ready to excuse, to
trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes. If we correct others, it must be done purely for their sake and not for ours. We speak
only because we sincerely care for their mission and for the Kingdom of Heaven and do not want them to be led astray.
We always have the opportunity to reverse our tendency to reject difficult brothers, in our prayer we can always find new forms of
acceptance and hospitality. A well-known story says that some World War II soldiers carried the body of their fallen comrade to a
small parish church after a fierce battle. They asked the pastor if they could give their friend a Christian burial in the church
cemetery. The pastor asked if the dead man was a Catholic. Because his friends could not answer, the pastor regretfully turned them
down. So they buried the body just outside the fence of the cemetery. The next morning when they went to bid farewell to their
friend they could not locate his grave. Puzzled, they knocked again on the church door to question the priest about it. He replied:
The first part of the night I stayed awake disturbed by what I had told you. The second part of the night I spent moving the fence.
Christian compassion is not limited to give things or to solve all our neighbors’ problems out of pity or sympathy. It goes deeper. It
is helping people dream and make his deepest aspiration true. Christian compassion is helping the weaker ones to rise, to give
them the opportunity to serve others and discover his or her personal task. Compassion is helping others discover their most
authentic self. This is giving life to our fellowmen, because we cannot forget that the Spiritual Works of Mercy (Admonish sinners,
Instruct the uninformed, Counsel the doubtful, Comfort the sorrowful, Be patient with those in error, Forgive offenses and Pray for
the living and the dead) help to provide real life in the present, and in the future eternal life in heaven.
For those who want to save their life, will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save
it.
Jesus sent twelve disciples and later another seventy-two. These seventy-two represent all of us, because the harvest is plentiful and
there is work for all of us:
Two ladies were sharing lunch together when one said to the other: I don’t know many Christians, but somehow I can’t help
regarding them as hypocrites. Said the other: But your sister-in-law, she lives in the same house with you; surely you must
acknowledge that she is a devoted Christian.
That’s just it, was the eye-rolling reply. She has a very lovely disposition, and she devotes her life to missions and Catechesis, but
she has never said a word to me about becoming a Christian. I know that she is fond of me, but if she believed all that, don’t you
think she would not have said something?
The message of Jesus is inclusive even of those who are spiritually or physically dead. This is why St Paul wrote: We do not live to
ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live
or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the
living (Rom 14: 7-9).
St Paul gives us one of the best descriptions of love ever written. In our modern world, when people speak about love they
are referring to control, lust and possessiveness. St Paul was well aware of the mixed motives behind what we do, but he believed in
the power of love and its centrality for the Christian.
If love cannot be hidden, the lack of love cannot either. Those whom we serve, both the believers and unbelievers will notice that
something is missing, is not authentic or real. I am nothing, Paul says. Nothing is what will happen, no matter how good it looks on
the surface. We cannot get to heaven without it because it is heaven itself. So, heaven can be experienced here, though a mirror
darkly, enigmatically, but truly nonetheless. An act of love has always a price (a modern Samaritan story):
George Herbert was a well-known English poet, priest and musician. He was on his way to a music session one evening when he
came on a man whose horse had collapsed under the load. Man and horse were in distress and needed help urgently. Herbert was not
a healthy or strong man, but he took off his clerical robes and helped the man get his horse back to its feet. He bought some feed for
the horse and soon the man and horse were able to resume their journey
Normally Herbert kept himself well, his friends were surprised when he turned up with dirty hands and stained clothes. They
expressed surprise and disappointment that he got involved in such a messy task. He replied: The thought of what I have done will
be music to my ears at midnight. The omission of it would have caused discord in my conscience. For if I am bound to pray for all in
distress, I am sure that I am bound to do all in my power to practice what I pray for. Then, let us tune the instruments.
We want to be popular, to be liked and appreciated. As a consequence, like Jeremiah, we can get discouraged when, like Jesus, we
collide with the lack of understanding and even persecution. The disciple is not greater than the teacher. But we rely on the promise
that never fails.
The fundamental criterion of a true prophet and apostle is that he is motivated only by one reason, love.
How do we handle rejection by others especially by people whom we consider as friends? Do not let evil defeat you; instead,
conquer evil with good (Rom 12:21). Only when, our hearts are pure that we can go beyond the ordinary circumstances of our lives
and see God in everything.
