abstract
In this work the chemical properties of certain alcohols (ethanol, isopentyl alcohol and
ethylene glycol) are studied, through a series of experiences of chemical results. The
reactivity of the alcohols is experimentally dependent on the position and number of the
hydroxyl functional group (OH-). The first reaction that takes place is the oxidation of the
ethyl alcohol in which you can notice a loss of electrons and a gain of oxygen atoms,
then the Fischer esterification is performed, witnessing a pleasant fruity aroma, finally an
increase in the temperature in the solution of ethylene glycol with sodium (exothermic
reaction) and a change of pink color with phenolphthalein (basic solution).
