Life and Teaching of Jesus
The Ten Virgins
This parable is about ten virgins that want to meet the bridegroom.
There were five virgins that are wiser and another five virgins are
foolish. What were the differences between the wiser and foolish
virgins? Wiser virgins were those that had prepared oil in their
vessels with their lamps. On the other hand, were the foolish virgins
that brought their lamps without oil. The five wise virgins with
lighted lamps joined the trong and entered the house with bridal
train, and the door was shut. Meanwhile, the foolish virgins that
went to get oil were left behind when they reach the banqueting hall.
The master of the feast said ,”I know you not.” The foolish virgins
were rejected by the master unexpectedly.
In this parable of ten virgins, the coming of the bridegroom
represent the coming of Christ, that happens at the darkest hour of
earth’s history. The bride represent the church, God’s people.
Wise virgins represent the person that shine the light of good works
in a sin darkened world, they always help others. They always
sought for truth and the Word of God, so that they life powered with
the oil, Holy Spirit. They always prepared by studying the scriptures
and never give up to wait for the coming of Christ. Not only that,
they have faith in God and nothing can pull them away from God.
Foolish virgins represent the person that have no strong faith in
God. They failed to allow the Holy Spirit power their life. When the
bridegroom tarrying the feast, their disappointment over their faith.
As day pass, they feel disappoint and take no responsibility in
preparing the coming of Christ. They reject God’s word and mercy.
"While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at
midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go
ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their
lamps." [Matthew 25:5-7.]We did not even care about the mercy of
God. God want to save us, but we reject His help. We love to accept
the misinterpretation of coming of Christ. At the moment when we
receive the news that ‘Jesus is coming!’, we will wait for Him
eagerly and earnestly. However, as we living in this world that full
of temptation, we are being tempted foolishly by Satan.
Automatically, we will like the foolish virgins ‘slumbered and slept’
when waiting for Jesus second coming.
In {COL408.1}, we know that the oil represent the Holy Spirit.
What should we do to fill ourselves with Holy Spirit? As we sin, we
cannot be filled with Holy Spirit all the time. By doing good works
also does not mean that we can fill ourselves with Holy Spirit. We
should always confess our sin as God promises in 1 John 1:9, then
we will be cleansed and forgiven. We should always obedience to
God’s word and be faithful, Ephesians 5:18 command that we will
be filled with Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit can bring us spiritual
happiness, it even can replace worldly happiness on material.
In Psalms 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light
unto my path.” Light is the word of God. This show that the Word
of God can lighten up the path of our spiritual life, so that the sinner
in this dark ages can walk boldly in this peaceful path. Man with
this light as guidance will not be tempted and stronger. However,
nowadays, most of the people, even the Christians don’t care about
the light, word of God. They may have study the scriptures, but they
are not like the wise virgins which fill themselves with Holy Spirit.
They are secular and their sins increased day by day. They follow
Satan’s word rather than God Word. This let Satan reign our heart
and mind, and soon they farther than God.
I choose this parable is because I can feel the world nowadays is in
the situation like this. Before I join the Seventh-day Adventist
Church, I always have opportunity to join other church member,
such as Methodist, Catholic and Jehovah’s witnesses. When I join
them, I did not study about the Bible. I did not even know the
Gospels. I cannot see Jesus through their characters, their characters
were so worldly until people surrounding them cannot feel the
God’s love. They are blinded with all the temptations, they are too
excited and enjoy the world. They are deaf until they cannot hear the
angel’s message is alarming around the world.
Chinese idiom have said “Man at birth is fundamentally good in
nature”. This quote cause a lot of people believe that when a baby is
born, he is sinless. If the baby grow become a rebellion boy, they
will said that the baby was affected by the people around him. They
did not know we are sinner that inherit the sin of our ancestors,
Adam and Eve, since we are born. Therefore, in this case, they did
not alert that their sin are almost overcome them. They are proud
and did not feel helpless. They did not know that they need a
saviour, a redeemer, to save their sinful life and to cleanse them.
What I want to illustrate is it is time for us as Christians to spread
the gospels and the messages around the world, not for ourselves
only, also for the others.
In conclusion, if we are see Jesus at the end of time, the wise
Christians must have that oil, which is the Holy Spirit, which will
sanctify us, transforming us so that our light will shine the light of
righteousness. This will allow Jesus to recognize us when He comes
for the bride. Not only for ourselves, we should also shine the light
toward the others, let the other bewildered also always fill their
vessels with oil.
