What You Waited For

“Ladies and gents, this is the moment you’ve waited for…
…oh this is the greatest show” –The Greatest Showman

It has always been the general truth that Intramurals is an avenue of students in
showcasing and developing further their intelligences, potentials, and strength in terms of
sports. So imagine the Intramurals that doesn’t only serve as a court for bodily-kinesthetic
prodigies but also as a stage for visual-spatial, linguistic-verbal, musical, and interpersonal
geniuses. Unbelievable, right? But better believe it because you are imagining with your eyes
wide open as Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC) held its first-ever College Intramural
and Socio-Cultural Competition last September 5 – 6, 2018.
Bearing the theme “An Avenue for Solidarity, Excellence, and Youth Development,”
Dr. Marlyn G. Nielo, SUC President II, encouraged all the participants by reminding them that
“neither you win nor you lose, either you win or you learn.”
The inclusion of Socio-Cultural Competition in this year’s Intramurals has been the
steppingstone for the participants to qualify for the upcoming Southern Tagalog Regional
Association of State Universities and Colleges (STRASUC) Culture and the Arts Festival at
Laguna State Polytechnic University. Being that said, the competition is structured on hthe
STRASUC Culture and the Arts Festival is composed of Music Laban, Dance Competitions,
Literary, Performing Arts, and the search for OMSC Festival King and Queen 2018.
The enthusiasm was not extinguished despite the heavy rain onslaught as the Music
Laban contestants’ golden voices serenaded and vied for the golden spot on September 5
at the Labangan-Main Gymnasium. Kundiman was championed by the College of Teacher
Education (CTE), Bandurya by College of Business Administration (CBAM), Pop Solo by
OMSC-Sablayan, Duet and Live Band by College of Business Administration (CBAM)
respectively.
Literary, Performing Arts and Dance competitions were held simultaneously the next
day. Essay Writing, Pagsulat ng Sanaysay, Extemporaneous Speech, and Talumpati for the
Literary Contests were held at the Library Building as well as Masining na Pagkukuwento,
Storytelling while Radio drama and Short and Sweet Play for the Performing Arts were held at
San Jose Campus. However, the Contemporary Dance, and Folk Dance for the Dance
Competitions were detained at the Labangan-Main Gymnasium with the Hip-hop contest on
the night later onto serve as an appetizer before the most-awaited main course – the search
for OMSC Festival King and Queen 2018.
With balloons, horns, and tarpaulins banners, all-out cheers from each College are
heard every time their candidates ramp their way on the stage with their sweetest smile
pasted on their faces. Each one shined their brightest but only one King and Queen shall be
crowned. The College of Teacher Education (CTE) became the home of OMSC royalties as
both of their representatives were crowned as the OMSC Festival King and Queen 2018.
This year’s Intramurals did not only deviate from the normal celebration of the event –
it made a history. This annual celebration proved that it should not only showcase those
bodily-kinesthetic prowess but also the other intelligence for developing a total person
responsive to the challenges of globalization.
