continuously innovate, develop new products and services, or in other words, they have to diversify
its product portfolio. Only those destinations, which succeed to adjust to new market trends, by
developing new and by improving existing tourism products and services, can count on stabile and long-term
sustainable tourism growth and development. The imperative of diversification of the products in the last decade
has resulted with the transformation of the tourism market from so called mass tourism market in the wide range
of smaller market segments or market niches, commonly called special interest tourism (SIT).
Special interest tourism can be defined as those types of tourist activity done by the people whose choice of the
destination for holiday is mostly motivated by their specific interests and whose level of satisfaction with tourism
products and services is mostly determined by the quality of the experience in a destination and by the degree in
which the destination succeeds to satisfy their specific needs and interests. Because of the fact that the market of
special interest tourism is based on the narrow specialization of the tourist’s interests (e.g. the bird’s watchers will
go to the bat land areas that are inhabited with large number of bird’s species), the term of special interest tourism
is often being used as the antonym for the term of mass tourism as the type of tourism practiced unselectively
by a large number of people, regardless their specific tendencies and interests, in the scientific and professional
literature.
The fact that modern tourists are becoming more informed and demanding, and that they want to be occupied
with wide spectra of activities during their stay in a destination has largely influenced the accelerated development
of the special interest tourism. That’s why it’s very important for the destinations to develop those tourism
products and services that have the possibility of satisfying specific needs of modern tourists.
Further text gives a short overview of currently popular special types of tourism in the
world and the possibility of their development in the Federation of Bosnia and
Herzegovina.
