1.0 FEATURES
The Texas Oil Tools DSA4 Side Door Stripper Packer is designed to pack-off on coiled tubing as it is
stripped in and out of the well, at working pressures up to 10,000 psi. This design permits the
replacement of the packing elements and bushings through the open "window" below the injector.
Changing packers is always easier, but it is particularly advantageous when changing packers with
tubing in the well.
The side door design permits replacement of the packer, energizer and non-extrusion rings by
hydraulically retracting the pack-off piston and exposing an open portal through which these elements
may be changed with tubing in the well. This design also incorporates positioning the balanced
actuator piston above the pack-off element, isolating the hydraulic chamber from well pressure and
eliminating any effects caused by fluctuations in well pressure.
The hydraulic pack-off cylinder is long stroke and double acting. This double acting feature allows the
operator to use hydraulic pressure to pump the piston up to relieve pack-off pressure on the packer
system; as well as, to completely retract it, exposing the packers for easy replacement.

The DSA4 packers, energizers and non-extrusion rings are common to the DS84 and DTS4 model
stripper packers. Internal wear bushings, packers, and non-extrusion rings are available for coiled
tubing sizes up to 2 7/8" size and all alloy components in contact with pressurized well fluids conform
to NACE Specification MR-01-75 for H2S Service.

2.0 SERVICE

H2S SERVICE - All well fluid wetted alloy components to NACE MR-01-75, with Viton and Poly-Myte
seals. Hydraulic seals are Nitrile. Operating temperature range -20°F. to +200°F. Note: seals and
pack- off elements are available for higher temperatures.

DNV -32°C H2S SERVICE - All well fluid wetted alloy components to NACE MR-01-75, with Viton and
Poly-Myte seals. Hydraulic seals are Nitrile. Operating temperature range -32°C.(-25°F.) to +93°C.
(+200°F.) Charpy Impact Tests and NDE on all parts required by DNV, complete with DNV Design
Verification, Data Book and Certificate of Conformity for operating to -32°C.

ARCTIC -50°F H2S SERVICE - All well fluid wetted alloy components to NACE MR-01-75, with low
temperature o-rings and special Poly-Myte seals. Charpy Impact Tests at -50°F and NDE on all parts
required by API 6A. Operating temperature range -50°F. to +200°F.

HYDRAULIC REQUIREMENTS:

The DSA4 hydraulic cylinder has a larger diameter than the standard DS84 stripper packer, since
placing the hydraulic system above the packer requires that the pack-off force exceed the force of the
well pressure acting on the packer. The ratio of the well pressure to hydraulic pressure is dependent
upon the size of the coiled tubing.

The calculated hydraulic pressure is the pressure required to overcome the force of the well pressure. A
slight additional amount of hydraulic pressure will be required to compress the packer.

To operate the DSA4 in all of the various applications, the hydraulic system should have a 5,000 psi
working pressure. Most applications will require much less pressure. Retract pressure on the lower side of
the piston should not exceed 5,000 psi. The DSA4 works most conveniently with a pump having a 4-way
valve and two hoses. If a single hose system is used, be sure that the quick connectors do not have check
valves as this would prevent escape of the downstream hydraulic fluid and prevent operation of the tool.

The DSA4 stripper packer is available in three different service applications.

PREMATURE PACKER WEAR - The internal wear bushings above the packers are extra long, for
better centering of the coiled tubing and longer wear life. The single most frequent cause of
premature packer wear or failure, is worn bushings. At very low well and hydraulic pressures, worn
bushings may be useable. At higher pressures, it is essential that the non-extrusion rings and
packer bushings fit closely around the tubing to prevent packer extrusion. Bushings must be
replaced frequently to minimize any extrusion gaps.

PACKER REPLACEMENT - Close BOP pipe rams to control well pressure and vent residual well
pressure that may remain between the DSA4 stripper and the BOP. Back out the two lock screws
(9-1) and open wide both doors (19). Pressure up the retract port and fully retract piston (15)
exposing packers and seal (1-11). Remove upper non-extrusion ring (2-7) while supporting packer
bushing (2-3).

Remove both halves of energizer (23) to expose packer (2-1). Remove packer, lower bushing
ring (2-2) and packer bushing (2-3). Inspect packer bushing and lower bushing (2-2) for wear and
seal for damage. Replace as necessary.

A reserve seal (1-11), located in the lower groove on the seal sub (14) may be used during
operations with tubing in the well.

Re-install lower bushing and lower non-extrusion ring. Install packer bushing into piston and
support while installing new packer, energizer and upper non-extrusion ring. Pressure up on upper
pack-off port and extend piston down over pack-off and seal until doors can be closed around piston
above step ring (16). Rotate the lock screws to the locked position. Pressurize upper pack-off port to
energize packer as necessary. Equalize well pressure above the rams in the BOP and
open rams.

DISASSEMBLY - Repeat disassembly portion of packer replacement procedure as described
previously. Remove retainer ring (3), washer (17) and step ring (16). Clamp body (20) in a vice
and remove both cap screws (4). Remove bushing clamp (25), to expose bushing sleeve (24) and
top bushing (2-4). Pull out top bushing (2-4) with both guide bushings (2-5) and bottom spacer
bushing (2-6). Drain any remaining hydraulic fluid from pack-off port and remove bushing sleeve (24)
using spanner wrench holes to back out thread. Take care not to damage sealing surfaces of sleeve.
Drain remaining hydraulic fluid from retract port in body (20) and remove cylinder (13). Remove o-
rings (1-1 & 1-3). Remove bottom sub (18) from body (20) and remove seals (1-11). Remove seal
sub (14) from bottom sub (18) and seal (1-8). While supporting end of piston (15), press piston from
body (20), taking care not to damage any external sealing surfaces. Remove seals (1-5 & 1-7) from
piston and seal (1-2) from body (20). Clean and lubricate all parts.
ASSEMBLY - Reverse above Disassembly Procedure in same sequence and complete second
portion of Packer Replacement Procedure.
A bushing installation tool (11) is available to aid in installing the interlocking bushings.
