1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Description

Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company Limited operates an LNG Plant on Das Island, U.A.E.

The Plant consists of two identical trains with associated utilities commissioned in 1977 and a third train
with associated utilities commissioned in 1994. Plant products are LNG, LPG, Pentane and molten
Sulphur. These are exported through separate jetties; one for LNG, LPG and Pentane and the other one
for Sulphur.

Owing to ageing issues of the most of the substation equipment on the Das Island and non-availability of
spare parts as their manufacturers have stopped producing the spares, ADGAS launched the project for
revamping of 3.3kV and 415V substations. The revamp includes the replacement and retrofitting of
switchboards and replacement of power and distribution transformers, DC UPS and Battery Banks in
substations of 4, 5, T1, T2 and 2

TARGET has been awarded EPC contract for this project. Target appointed WorleyParsons to carry out
the Detail Engineering activities for this project.

4. CALCULATION REQUIREM ENT

4.1 Design Criteria

Substation-2 is located near Substation-P1 on Second Street. Substation-2 consists of 3.3kV Switchgear
supplied by 2Nos. 11/3.45 kV, 6300 kVA Transformers. The 415V MCC at Substation-2 is supplied by
2Nos. 3.3/0.433 kV, 1500 kVA Transformers.Substation-2 is fed by upstream Substation-L1.

Each transformer shall be rated such that they meet the load demand of both bus sections (Bus-A & B) of
the switchgear along with 20% additional spare capacity for future load growth. The rating of the
Transformers shall ensure that one Transformer is adequate to supply the entire load when the other
transformer is not in operation.

Since these transformers are going to replace the existing transformers of the same rating, transformers
will be designed similar to existing transformer as specified in project specification, data sheet and basis
of design.

5. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENT

5.1 Methodology
a) The input kW and kVAr requirement of each individual load is calculated considering efficiency &
power factor as per Appendix-3 (Electrical Load List for Substation-2).

b) The Maximum normal plant load and Peak plant load are calculated as per the below formula:

 Maximum normal plant load = 100% Continuous load + 30% of Intermittent load.
 Peak Plant Load = 100% Continuous load + 30% of Intermittent load + 10% of Stand by load.

c) Transformers Rating (kVA) is calculated as follow.

 Transformer Size = Total Peak Load (kVA) + 20% Spare (For Future Load) (kVA).

d) The transformer rating (kVA, % Impedance) is checked for its capacity to start the largest motor
load with the maximum voltage drop at the motor terminals restricted to 15% of the nominal
voltage.
e) All loads (including 20% spare for future load) are considered as operating while the largest
motor is started.

f) The motor power cable details (Size, Length etc.) are considered as per the existing As-built
document.

g) Existing transformer details are as follow.

5.2 Existing System Data

a) Electrical motor rating and the absorbed power values specified in the electrical load list are
based on As-built SLD and Load schedule, respectively.

VOLTAGE DROP DURING MOTOR STARTUP:

a) Power Transformer

As per the transformer sizing calculation (Appendix-1), the maximum voltage drop at Switchgear and
Motor terminal during largest motor starting is as follow.

 Max. Voltage Drop at MCC-2A = 15.22%.

 Max. Voltage Drop at motor terminal (7-KM-104B) = 17.55%

However as per ETAP motor starting study of Acid Gas Blower Motor (7-KM-104B) the calculated voltage
drop during starting of the largest motor is as follow (refer Appendix-4 for details).

 Max. Voltage Drop at MCC-2A = 8.84%.

 Max. Voltage Drop at motor terminal (7-KM-104B) = 10.26%

Since the ETAP result is within the acceptable voltage drop limit of 10% at bus and 15% at the motor
terminal, it can be concluded that the selected transformer is suitable for largest motor starting.

a) Distribution Transformer

As per the transformer sizing calculation (Appendix-2), the maximum voltage drop at Switchgear and
Motor terminal during largest motor starting is as follow.

 Max. Voltage Drop at MCC-2B = 3.54%.

 Max. Voltage Drop at motor terminal (5-GM-251A) = 15.92%

The maximum voltage drop at motor terminal is only marginally higher than the acceptable limit of
15%.Hence it can be concluded that the selected transformer is suitable for largest motor starting.

Total Running Load at MCC-2B, Refer (Appendix-3) = 239.73 KW +j 148.57 KVAR

= 282.03 KVA

Total Peak Load at MCC-2B, Refer (Appendix-3) = 244.23 KW +j 151.36 KVAR

= 287.33

Considering 20% Future Load, the estimated Transformer Size (120% of Peak Load) = 366.64 KVA

As a worst case scenario, Total Base load considering the additional 20% spare (E) 287.676 KW +j+ 178.284 KVAR

338.44 KVA

Therefore, Total Base load before starting the largest motor (F) = (E) - (B)

267.12 KW +j+ 165.54 KVAR

Hence based on the above calculation it can be concluded that the selected Transformer Size is suitable for starting of the largest motor (5-GM-251A)

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Introduction / Background

Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company Limited operates an LNG Plant on Das Island, U.A.E.

The Plant consists of two identical trains with associated utilities commissioned in 1977 and a third
train with associated utilities commissioned in 1994. Plant products are LNG, LPG, Pentane and
molten Sulphur. These are exported through separate jetties; one for LNG, LPG and Pentane and the
other one for Sulphur.

Owing to ageing issues of the most of the substation equipment on the Das Island and non-availability
of spare parts as their manufacturers have stopped producing the spares, ADGAS launched the
project for revamping of 3.3kV and 415V substations. The revamp includes the replacement and
retrofitting of switchboards and replacement of power and distribution transformers, DC UPS and
Battery Banks in substations of 2, 4, 5, T1 &T2.

WorleyParsons has been appointed by the EPC Contractor: TARGET ENGINEERING CONST. CO
(L.L.C.), to carry out the Detail Engineering activities for this project.

3. BASIS OF CALCULATION
The following basis is considered for the electrical load list:

a) Values for Load factor, Efficiency, Power factor and Load Duty (Continuous / Intermittent / Stand-
by) are considered as per FEED.
b) Power & Distribution Transformers are sized considering 20% spare over the Peak load for future
load.
c) Maximum normal plant load and Peak plant load are calculated as below:
 Maximum normal plant load = 100% Continuous load + 30% of Intermittent load
 Peak Plant Load = 100% Continuous load + 30% of Intermittent load +10% of Stand by load
